Are you, guys, using flick or romaji input on your phones?

Well there you go even more options. Thanks for letting me know.

Other useful shortcuts include “twu” for とぅ and “thu” for てゅ. Similar options for “d” sounds. Experiment yourself

I’m a pretty fast keyboard typist so I am really comfortable with romaji input on WK and my linux IME. I tried the flick keyboard on android for a few weeks when I started using HelloTalk, but as soon as I discovered you can put it in romaji mode I haven’t looked back. Maybe one day I’ll give it another go.

Interestingly, I found I’d totally forgotten that ち and つ are t sounds and I found myself hunting for them. And then trying to remember which sound was in which direction. It’s probably really good for reinforcing hiragana and how it’s classified.

I use flick. I make more typos more often with romaji. It took me a while to get used to typing quickly on it, but now that I’ve been using it for a while I find that my typing is much more accurate than it used to be!

I use romaji when I’m doing WaniKani because I don’t wanna switch back and forth during review/learning sessions. However, when I’m actually texting in Japanese I flick (after you get used to it it’s really easier and imo faster to type).

Wow, after all these years of avoiding flick like the plague, I think I will 意識改革 and give it a shot! I usually have seen ほろ酔い同僚 struggle with it…as at our workplace, you can’t be fiddling with your スマホン and the only time I have really seen people use it is at those “職委員会議”(食飲会議)

Simeji is a pretty popular flick keyboard on Android. I prefer it over Google Japanese IME when I’m traveling in Japan. Lots of cute 顔文字 built into it.

For WK, I use romaji input because it’s a pain to switch between two keyboards when doing reviews :+1:

The reason it’s faster is that each kana only requires one tap (except the ones with dakuten). If you use a romaji keyboard you have to type all the romaji letters of each kana. Assuming you have muscle memory for both keyboards, the one with fewest taps must be faster.

Does anyone know of a flick keyboard option for iOS that has small symbols on the keys to show you which way to flick? Helpful for training the muscle memory.

I don’t but the vowels are always in the same direction so that helps a ton.

Romaji. Flick annoys me. There’s definitely a learning curve.

FTFY

(I use flick because I just enjoy it.)

I like flick. It was very slow at first but then doing hundreds of reviews it got comfortable! It just feels right to me to type Japanese words the Japanese way

Someone in these forums introduced me to this keyboard and I have to say it’s much better than both flick and romaji for me!

It’s romaji but reduced to just the set of characters you need for Japanese. Use flick to access some characters. Combines the best of both worlds in my opinion!

I use romaji, it’s so much faster. My coworkers get confused if I hand them the flip keyboard when I ask for them to write something down for me. I’m like, but you’re Japanese…lol

I use romaji input because that is what I started using a few years ago and it somewhat fast for me. I know the flick is better in the long run, but I have to type in Japanese on my phone on a daily basis and I’m worried about the learning curve slowing me down.

Indeed hard to get used to, but I do prefer flick

I’m always up for a challenge

While I think flick is probably better, I haven’t been using it for reviews because it’s a hassle to switch back and forth between keyboards, so I’m just using it in other places. Unfortunately, I have little opportunity to write Japanese elsewhere so I’m not getting much practice.

The flick keyboard feels kinda like the old button input phones’ keyboards and I don’t like those at all  Also I have tiny child size hands so I never have any problems with a qwerty keyboard even in my native language which has a few extra letters (and thus every key a bit smaller). So can’t really see the point for me in trying to learn a whole another keyboard.
