Aleithian’s Study Log

I appreciate the kind words. My love for language has definitely ebbed and flowed over the years. I’ve always been sensitive to whether I had the right tools to do something, and now that I have Migaku and this new Anki setup (more soon), I feel like I had a solid toolkit - it’s like it turned the key on my innate love for language and now my motivation is through the roof.

So I played around with Grok and Anki last night, and I’ve hit on an insanely effective method to generate Anki decks in any language.

Step 1: Set up Anki to import from a .xlsx file using this add-on: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/716643677

Step 2: Set up Anki with a suitable note type. Mine is modeled on Migaku’s setup, which works well for me. Here’s my card info:

I’ll say up front I’m not a coder so forgive any errors in this. But the output is how I want it at least.

Step 3: Set up a Google Sheet, Excel file or whatever with the corresponding fields per the add-on instructions:

Step 4: Set up a Grok or ChatGPT thread with the following prompt:

"This will be a thread for the explanation of Latin vocabulary. You will abide by the following general guidelines for all answers:

You are a language API that explains presents a Latin WORD or PHRASE, EXAMPLE SENTENCE, SENTENCE TRANSLATION, a PARSING of the WORD or PHRASE, WORD or PHRASE DEFINITION, and a NOTE describing the specific nuance of the specified word.

You will use macrons for long vowels where appropriate.

I will enter a single Latin WORD or a short Latin PHRASE.

You will respond with an answer formatted as a table in six columns capable of being pasted into a single row in Google Sheets. Each column will contain the following respective information:

Column 1: The Latin WORD or PHRASE I give you, e.g. īnsula, in capitulō.

Column 2: A brief EXAMPLE SENTENCE from Familia Romana per se Illustrata that contains the WORD or PHRASE.

Column 3: An English SENTENCE TRANSLATION of the EXAMPLE SENTENCE in Column 2.

Column 4: A PARSING of the WORD or PHRASE into its principal parts with a gender denotation in parentheses where appropriate, e.g. īnsula, īnsulae (f).

Column 5: A brief DEFINITION of the WORD or PHRASE incorporating the most common definitions and prefaced with an abbreviated indication of the WORD’s grammar type, e.g. n. for noun, v. for verb, adj. for adjective, adv. for adverb, etc.

Column 6: A NOTE describing the meaning of the WORD or PHRASE per the following guidelines:

  • Respond concisely in no more than 100 words;
  • Specified WORD or PHRASE must be in its original language throughout your reply;
  • All other explanation text must be in English;
  • Your response must be formatted as a single paragraph;
  • DO NOT OUTPUT the language name or the word 'nuance’;
  • DO NOT OUTPUT any notes on pronunciation;
  • Conclude with illustrative contrasts with similar Latin terms if confusion between terms is likely or nuance is important for interpretation.

This concludes your language prompt."

Note that the reference book for example sentences can easily be changes. I’ll change mine to the next book in the series after I’ve mined all the Familia Romana content.

Step 5: Plug a word into the AI and receive the info:

Step 6: Paste into the spreadsheet:

Step 7: Download the spreadsheet as a .xlsx then import into Anki using the standard import function, following the add-on requirements.

Step 8: Voila, you now have an Anki deck.

I set up another thread in Grok with an adapted prompt to handle Ancient Greek, tied to The Iliad. Here’s what it spit out:

And here’s my new Anki card:

Utterly revolutionary. This will literally save months of my existence writing flashcards, and can be tailored to my specific needs at any given time.

I can imagine!

This makes a lot of sense. When I was learning to read Russian, I did similarly: only looked up vocab as needed to understand what was going on, and didn’t usually bother trying to dissect which case was what or what kind of verb it was or what-have-you. I enjoy learning about grammar, but I think that would’ve gotten frustrating really quick.

That’s really clever! :durtle:

This is really clever! I’ll think about how I might use something like this. Good job with your studies!

Thanks. I find that AI can contribute is so many ways that aren’t intuitive, at least to me. I’m to the point where, whenever I want to do something, I remind myself to ask “Can AI help with this?”

コメント: It’s proving to be quite pleasant moving through the Latin text, generating my Anki deck using the method described earlier. I’ve added 8/35 chapters so far. I’ll update my Latin word count later after I’ve plowed through the reviews. I’m doing 40 per day since I already know the words - I just want to get them all done so I can properly track how many Latin words I know. Seeing the word count has proven to be a powerful motivational took, so I’m just playing catch up with it for now. When I get all the words added and reviewed, I’ll start reading Latin for pleasure again whenever I feel like it and mining sentences as I’m doing for French.

コメント: I found a neat trick for adding vocabulary with Migaku, though it could be applied to any flashcard creation system. For context, I’m having a really hard time learning Japanese vocabulary outside then structure of Wanikani, because words learn ad hoc lack the structural connection to kanji I’ve learned or am learning. So what I’ve done is opened Jisho in the Migakua browser and started searching for common words that contain the kanji I already know. I can then generate flashcards for any word that isn’t already in WK (since Jisho tells me what’s in WK). So it’s a sort of WK+ system integrated with Migaku. I don’t plan to do it seriously at the moment, because like I said my current focus is to wrap up WK itself. But afterwards, it will be a great tool.

コメント: So after ten days gluten free, I ate at Applebees. Despite having their gluten sensitive food (they don’t guarantee gluten free), I ended up with my first gluten reaction. Man what a difference. After ten days I was feeling great. Then boom, a whole host of symptoms came back. This gluten issue is no joke. I’m currently dealing with a headache, body aches, fatigue, nausea, acid reflux - all as expected apparently. It’s hard to describe how radically different this is from how I felt yesterday before eating there. At least I have important perspective now.

Spanish is proving incredibly easy to read, so I expect I’ll have decent reading fluency within 3 months. Again, my goal is strictly to be able to read these languages. I wonder how different Italian is from French, Spanish and Latin.

コメント: I’m looking into buying an M5 iPad Pro with the nano texture screen. Screen glare was always my biggest frustration using an iPad, because I want to use it outside without limitation. Reviews seem to suggest it works exceptionally well.

Update: Well, I caved and bought the iPad. 13” 1TB iPad Pro with the nanotexture screen, and a Magic Keyboard. Man. Oh. Man. What an improvement in every way. This machine is absolutely outstanding. The keyboard is exceptional. Writing on it with an Apple Pencil is a pleasure thanks to the subtle texture of the screen surface. I have zero regrets buying this machine. And thanks to the anti-glare tech - which is better than I’d hoped - I’ll be able to finally work outside regularly in the fresh air, even in dark mode.

コメント: Man I love this new iPad. It really is a game changer for portable work and media. The M5 chip is insanely snappy and the nano-texture screen is as good as Apple said. Using the Apple Pencil with the screen is an absolute pleasure. I find writing kanji in my Anki scratchpad to be something I look forward to now, and I’ll probably start writing notes and stuff using the Pencil simple for the pleasure of it (I’ve always been someone who enjoys writing with pen and paper). Honestly one of the things I like the most is the new Magic Keyboard though - it’s a huge improvement over the old version, and feels far closer to a regular keyboard (heavy keys, durable etc).

But to language-related matters, I’ve taken a further step back from Japanese by stopping all additional sentence mining in Migaku while I wrap up Wanikani. It was taking too much of my time in addition to the other tasks I have, and was taking me away from more pleasurable activities like input.
