Hey everyone. I’ve spent a total of 12 weeks living in Japan over the last two summers, and I’ll be returning to Japan in August and living there for a year. I’ve been using WaniKani for about 4 months now and I just hit level 15. I did duolingo for a year and now after WK I feel like my vocab is going great, but I feel totally unprepared for holding conversations and being able to construct sentences. Any advice for learning/practicing grammar/conjugation/sentence building? I’ve heard a lot of people mention the importance of reading Japanese books; is there a certain level I should get to before I even try to do that? Or should I just jump in with something easy?
For Grammar, I’d recommend
As for reading, here are some sites for free reading:
https://drdru.github.io/twc.html
There’s also wonderful
which also teaches grammar, though it’s not free.
If you want to do listening practice, I highly recommend
The same team that made Satori made an app called Human Japanese to teach grammar. I used Genki to learn grammar, which was great, but if I were to do it again I would use Human Japanese + Satori from the start
Jump in with something easy.
But, you get what you practice, so if you want to be able to speak you’ll have to practice speaking sooner or later. You can start with shadowing and talking to yourself / the dog, but really you’ll need someone to practice talking to who can correct you. Presumably you’ll also need to practice listening…
I’m always hesitant to suggest more SRS, but bunpro.jp in reading mode will expose you to a lot of common grammar which can help with reading and listening even if it’s a bit of a step to speaking. 3 lessons a day would get through their N5-N3 decks well before August, they’ve got other textbook based deck too.
