I did my part, two pages できた! But jetlag has finally hit me today, so that’s probably what I’m finishing at today and hoping other days will have more study ^^

Today it’s about diet and being bullied about body image, always a sweet topic ^^

Also, Bunpro added a few new grammar points for each level, I might have to return to them after N1 grammar has been covered~

Life

what a cute little duk i wonder what is such a cute little duk doing in boston

One friend I know here is very much into animals, to the point where she’s volunteering in an online catalog of bird spottings and updating positions where birds have been seen so that other people can find them, but also some of the more rare spottings are going through moderation and she ranted that her submissions have been taken down once the birds were deemed to be mislabeled ^^

But yeah, I’m not in Boston for sightseeing and because of that I’m doing a little less of walking around

Still enough to see some history of the town ^^

I went to Macy’s and they didn’t sell parades, cowards >:[

And also, after a very stressful cooperation between different services, I got my luggage back! Inside was intact, which meant that all the things I haphazardly threw in in Sapporo still didn’t have proper places and were slapped on one another ^^

And as a wild thing, the temperature went up to 37 degrees today… and then a thunderstorm broke and it started looking really, really rainy, I think I might have been on a tip of enshrining an annual tradition of losing my powerbanks in May due to typhoons in Boston, but I covered that one in a bag and it’s still doing fine ^^

Either way, see you tomorrow!

BTW, I don’t think that your Suica card will work on the ‘T’…

It has been years since I last lived in Boston, right in the heart of the Back Bay, touristy Newbury St. at Gloucester St., but I couldn’t afford to buy stuff at most of those shops (and lived in Cambridge before that) - don’t get too used to the hot weather - eat some lobster and some chowder - get a hot dog or two at Fenway Park…

Your life is so jam packed doof.

Very late but I was not hate reading 経験ゼロ。it just turns out that I happen to like reading trash in Japanese is all

Glad the suitcase finally arrived (well and intact)

Whoo hoo!!

I am cheering for your suitcase and your power brick  (keep up the good work, it ain’t over 'til you’re back at home)

Your life is crazy awesome, so much fun to observe through your lens…

It was my first one (well I played diamond and pearl on a friend’s DS but it was the first one I owned) so no slander will be tolerated, thank you
I did get stuck in mt coronet and couldn’t figure out the way forward for quite a long time when I was a kid though, it’s not the best at explaining things properly

Prices went up from $13 to a $100 train ticket (cut from $150 after backlash!) with no discounts for kids or elderly people to get from.. New York to New York for the world cup games. Tickets and hotels seem to be doing worse than anticipated (almost like not that many people from all around the world have $10,000+ to spend on getting price-gouged watching a few footie games).

And I have to pay 400 yen on every train to board it, how expensive and inconvenient!!!

Ohhh, lore, nice to hear C:
There aren’t that many shops when I’m walking around, it feels to me like a lot of commerce has been moved into online spaces, but it’s also possible I don’t have a car and I’m just missing out on all of the cool shopping avenues

Funnily enough, it was my second, my first one was FireRed, I remember thinking FireRed was meh, but Pokemon Platinum was the stuff, and then as the time goes on and the PTSD of needing to excessively grind to beat マキシ’s gym leader or going into a swamp and then falling into it and not being able to get out, or a little of terrible HP/Exp bars animations wasting your time, over time Platinum started losing a lot of value to me, and I look at discussions on Reddit and people asking questions “what do you like about Pokemon Platinum” and people responding with “everything” and I’m like “???????? what am i missing???” xddd

At least give me Pokeathlon or give me death xdddd

Can’t wait to get back home and put down all of the things I found in Japan and clap my knees and go like ゾ〜 as I decide what to engage with next ^^

For now the two pages できる mode will have to survive, or I have to find a better way to smuggle stuff in Japanese to where I’m going ^^

Life

gonna have to ask ikea how did they manage to get ahold of the swedish fishies in the US ^^

Today i went through a walk in Charlestown, MA in a deadly heat ^^

This is also one of the older and more historic parts of the Boston area, as you can see by that amazing Starbucks in here and the savings bank ^^

I liked the fact they commemorate things and leave plaques to reminisce about important events in different places :eyes:

And I love the simplicity of having a street named “HIGH STREET” coming from the fact that… that street is high on a hill, and the rest of the things are below xddd

But then you climb High Street and surprise surprise, Americans love pointy things that point towards the sky for some reason and if they find any reason to put another one, they’ll make another Bunker Hill or something to feature one ^^

But yeah, today I was greeted with a platter of fruit, and being in Japan for so long, I kind of forgot what “fruit” is, between a random スイカ that I was able to snag, you look at this and you go like <INHALE>

Likewise, you look at THIS and you go like <INHALE> but for a different reason xdddd

Yes, it’s in a shopping mall xdd

Either way, see you tomorrow!

We love a good obelisk, just like Japan loves a good rock lol.

I woke up a little earlier so I was able to read a few pages in bed, but otherwise, not much progress done today, except that かんな really doesn’t like being bullied and her mom is getting worried about her, it’s still not the 返し part, but I might read a little more tomorrow~

Life

Anime Boston is popular to the point that even on the trains of public transport they have ads for it, TWO MONTHS AFTER IT WAS A THING xddd

But today I went to Cambridge, specifically to the Harvard campus to even out me being at MIT last year and me wanting to see what Harvard is like ^^

thank you cow ending all the global famine for a people :sob: :sob: :sob:

Some people here have really low hopes for the future, listen guys, it’s be a little more all rightish xddd

I don’t roam to American numbers, but PLEASE ANYONE just text them I’m dying to get a squid fact :sob: :sob: :sob:

I tried getting queenofthegods to get one but she just laughed me off xddddd

It’s a pretty weird time to roam Harvard though because they finished classes recently and they’re due for graduation next week, and because of that, a lot of the campus was simply closed down and you couldn’t walk into any buildings, including tours

I did manage to find a striking protest in front of the Art Museum of teachers striking the fact that some of them literally do get paid less than rent in Boston/Cambridge annually, and they’ve been striking for five weeks now, and even though Harvard’s presenting itself as a school that defies the current governance, unfortunately they do eat up the new ideas for bills and reforms for education regardless

Also, went to Fjällräven shop and got myself some new sports shorts to increase my collection of the brand, a clerk in there, Andrew, really wanted to yap about everything, movies, anime, Sapporo, Boston, Germany, discounts, and after like half an hour of yapping, which I very much appreciate btw (xddd), he told me that there’s a Memorial Day discount that starts really soon with 25% off on everything, he told me it’s not started yet, but he can approve it in advance.

So he went to the cash register and the discount didnt go through xddddd
So he just gave me a manual off the shelf -25% discount without any Memorial Days or anything xdddd
we stan :sob:
thank you Andrew

But yeah, Cambridge!

i also found this adorable little squirrel aww C:

And me and a few colleagues ended up getting some food in the evening aND OF COURSE WE’VE PLAYED BATTLESHIPS AND OF COURSE MY SHIP WON :DDDDDD

I actually did not eat sushi at all this time when I was in Japan, so that at least was something
oh, and it was real wasabi, not horse radish. My nostrils weren’t ready for it xdddddd

Either way, finally starting the actual going back home tomorrow, will involve a few adventures, so stay tuned and I might write an update from one airport tomorrow??? Maybe???

See you tomorrow!

I’m pretty sure I have unlimited texting on my phone plan so why not? Squid facts! Go!

All this talk of people starting in gen 3/4 is making me feel old lol, I started with Blue!

Girl I have a Japanese phone number, it would be roaming for me too XD.

While I do still technically have an American number preserved on a family plan, it doesn’t work while I’m in Japan. Can only use it after I pop the SIM card into my phone while descending into SeaTac airport.

AHHH KNOWLEDGE IS POWER THANK YOOOUUUU

…I played Blue on my J2ME phone for the first time, I do realize this also makes me ancient by specific standards ^^

Yeah, I manually turned off mine for the past month, because any calls or texts incoming can incur extra charges and I’m like “nonono please do not call me” :sob:

I WAS THERE I WAS THERE

So it’s a bit later and I’m picking up this book once again and realizing that it’s actually set in 北海道, and in the rural areas around 旭川, I’m at the point where the protagonist also moved away to 旭川, so it’s nice to have a connection like this ^^

Also, had a bizarre experience reading today, because most of the time my reading comprehension is really meh when reading in Japanese, but I did end up reading another book start to finish (@NihongoLearner19! I thought it might interest you!)

and it was really sweet and women in STEM content and it takes a woman to be the best man tropes. I really liked the feminist take on the mecha genre and there have been a few really sweet moments in it, but I think the translator’s note (who was a friend of the author) took the cake for me for how wholesome and adorable it was - she and the author have been fangirling over kpop groups and reality shows and organizing people and getting them hyped for things, there is a mention of the 2024 martial law organizing tangled in, so aaa, what a treasure of a book ^^

But as soon as I was done reading it, my reading comprehension in Japanese skyrocketted and I was able to follow what was happening in much more detail :eyes:

As the time went on, it went down once again, but between pages 80 and 110 I was immersed in the story and I felt as if I actually know Japanese xddd

As for the story of レシピにたくした料理人の夢 though, it’s really depressing and pain just keeps piling in, layer after layer - the protagonist is losing mobility, family members, closing off to the world, you’d think that by the middle of the book they’d already have a recovery arc, but no, all the kitchen utensils are missing the protagonist and hoping that he’ll come back around :sob:
It’s a book from a library, so I’ll try finishing this one up asap!

Life

Well guess what. I made it to NYC again!

Just for a six-hour layover though, but I ended up doing everything that I wanted to do. I visited all the bookstores and the Project V book from above has also been bought from one, McNally Jackson!

Somehow the books highlighted in 紀伊國屋 are completely different than the ones in Japan, though the magazines are the same - with an extra 400% price tag ^^

Also, Book-off! Managed to snag Tokyo Singles from it, read volumes 1-5 for Christmas, now I do have volume 6 ^^

The weather has been beautiful today to just walk around, and there have been 10x as many people as at -15 degrees in February xddd

okay send help i shall C:

Nintendo of NYC had a special launch event for the new Yoshi game, they had animators, but they didn’t give any free merch though ^^

And of course, STUFFED myself with the greasy huge NYC pizza slices too C:

I’m glad to hear everything is cool and all in NYC, even though I haven’t seen anything new today…

…although…

…yes, that was an actual person pulling off the tricks xddd

And here’s the Bryant park and the fountain that was frozen back in February. There’s no trace of the winter village and it’s a big open park right now! It’s weird how different it is just a few months later ^^

Anyway, before I get to Berlin, I have one more place I am visiting, so hear from you back in the European timezone later today!

L.OOOO.L.
I’m dying about Spidey

So great that you managed to find your next book in the series

It’s nice to be in a “growing phase” when your language comprehension is note "effortless"ね

LoL to read about the fangirling translator notes… Nothing gets by you

I will check it out, thanks for the rec!

くれない is so cool i swear C:

but yeah, i heard about Naru Day pretty late and I was just about to lay down in bed and start recovering after the trip when volume 35 got into my hands and I just needed to read it ^^

I feel like after the recent reading of prose I read manga much faster and reading comprehension is there, but it’s always been the case with Naruto, so who knows. Either way, I am improving in Japanese!

Life

First time in a while where my camera’s timestamp actually matches the real time ^^
Vienna!

Part of my pursuit around the city has been to find out if any traces of Eurovision are left, and although traces are found, the actual village of Eurovision has been redecorated for a film festival in Vienna this weekend and there are no gift shops anymore ^^

ANYWAY, STAN BANGARANGA

As you might have seen from my previous posts, I’m a huge stan of Austria and I very much enjoy the culture C:

And I had a really good day for sightseeing too, look at those shadows, look at this light!

Vienna is a much more walkable city than New York, so I was able to walk all the way through the city center and a little further today ^^

And, to continue on the trend of foods from the regions, had some Vienna coffee as well ^^

This time I saw something new - a neighborhood called Hundertwasser, apparently really popular with tourists, even though I just saw it for the first time!

birds, believe in yourself C:

ACTIVELY TRYINGGGG

And then finally came to Berlin and…

…oh lord. Someone commence an investigation into this quickly xddd

Anyway, I’m finally home! It was my first time I did a trip around the globe, 25 days around the world, Willy Fog is a sucker ^^

I’m still considering trying to make a proper wrapup, but not with this level of jetlag and this amount of sleep, so fingers crossed for tomorrow ^^

See you tomorrow!

I did mention being interested in horror and wanting to branch out of it, one cool thing coming out of it is that you get to experience another set of vocabulary you’ve never seen before and be curious about them :eyes:

論争に決着をつける means “to resolve a dispute” and
機関車同士をぶつけた means “locomotives mutually crashing into one another”

it’s cute how this manga had little text, but when it did…

人質にする means “to take hostage” and 脅迫 means “blackmail”

Either way, this is a seinen magazine specifically about horror and both of the stories have been written by women, upper part of the cover of the magazine looks like this:

I’m trying to make use of the Bookwalker Max trial for as long as I have it ^^

Japan Trip Wrapup

So to wrap up, this was my first time traveling around the world and even looking at the map I’m just grabbing my head and going like ‘that was kind of wild’ ^^

I think that the process of unpacking from the trip might take me a month or something, but イコちゃん already is going to be sleeping with me C:

But I’ve already started categorizing things, flipping through the JR tickets and going like “oh yeah, that day when I went for pilgrimages in Kansai was wild”

I thought of involving stats, but I’m not here for the bragging rights, I kind of wanted to highlight the fun things I saw and observations I’ve had ^^

So here’s a few!

  • JAPANESE DO NOT COVER THEIR MOUTHS WHEN THEY COUGH XDDDD
I still haven’t fully recovered and I cough at random times of the day, I think it might go away eventually, but damn xddd
  • :train: The mobility provided by JR Trains is incredible and it’s a deal that’s really hard to reproduce outside of Japan! The mobility has definitely influenced how towns are created, and 北海道 was one of the last to see the development happening - in Europe, metropolitan areas often don’t have any bigger towns around it for the next hundred kilometers or so, in Japan, it feels like there’s a town every few dozen kilometers, and that’s a really cool thing! In general, people say that JR Passes might be overrated and might not be one-size-fits-all solutions, but if you’re an ADHD traveller, like I am, you’ll use multiplicities of the value of the JR Ticket and you’ll have a great time each time ^^
  • :hugs: I had more friends in Japan than I thought! And I made more friends in Japan than I thought as well! I’m so grateful to @DIO-Berry and @queenofthegods for hosting me and introducing me to all sorts of cool things, including emotional labor on Discord when I was getting lost and didn’t know what to do ^^
DIO-Berry started me off, accidentally, in terms of getting to talk to random people in Japanese, and by the time I was in Hokkaido, I was already trying to do some small talk in 7-Elevens or in the restaurants and people seemed receptive to it??? Thanks for starting my engine!
And queenofthegods took me with my throat at the limits of capacity and was like “cool, get yourself together and we’re going on an ADVENTURE”, and just drove me a few hundred kilometers that day regarldess xddd
VERY APPRECIATED IN TERMS OF ADHD ADVENTURING YEEES
  • I really do feel the happiest when I’m constantly in motion, physically exhausted, but happy on the inside: watching people, listening to music, taking pictures of buildings, gawking at the local posters and so on!
  • :sunset: Kobe, Osaka and Takarazuka ended up being my favorite places I’ve visited, and I wish I could spend a bit longer in each of them! All Kobe, Osaka and Takarazuka feel like genuine towns that provide all sorts of amenities I enjoy when I adventure, but also I could genuinely see myself living in one of those! The day when the weather broke down in 北海道 and the skies became genuinely hopelessly gray in Sapporo was just a reminder that I picked a great time to visit it, but long term it would probably be weird to be living in there ^^
  • :strawberry: I didn’t expect how much I’d miss fruit over my adventure in Japan, and a few times I went out of my way to get myself an overpriced crepe with strawberries simply because I haven’t seen fruits in a while ^^
On the same note though, Japanese diet doesn’t scream “vegetarian” to me, so I had meat every single day, and now I can feel myself feeling cravings for meat and feeling even more addicted to meat than general, so perfect for your local carnivores!
  • :money_bag: Considering how Japan is in a financial crisis and a lot of physical goods were cheaper than ever, and of course I bought a lot of them, it was weird to see so many different opportunities, stalls, booths, just crammed right next to one another, to part ways with your money. I think I might have an okay filter in terms of saying “no” to buying things, but the amount of commerce was interesting to witness and I definitely gave in more than I would have doing sightseeing in Europe - and in majority of the cases, liked where my money went! ^^
  • :luggage: The older I get, the more I start prioritizing experiences over physical things, and I have a feeling that Japan developed a very standardized framework of how experiences should be conducted - of course, there’s the history-rich Kyoto or Himeji, if you’re going to Asahikawa, make sure to check the zoo! If you’re going to Furano, make sure you check the lavender fields! One thought I’ve had however, is that I kind of… don’t necessarily like those package holiday experiences, of arriving at destination A, waiting for a small bus to drive you to the place where you get to spend 47 minutes looking at a thing before bus picks you up and moves you to destination B, and I felt like some of the towns were not necessarily prepared for more, hm, freedom of experiencing adventures. If you don’t go to the castle/zoo in Wakayama, sure there will be a few statues you can look at… but the rest of the city is just a big residential area instead
In my personal observations, the European/American cities I visit tend to be a little more open-ended in terms of the amount of fun things you can do rather than investing heavily into just one thing you can visit instead? Don’t tell that to the travel department in Japan xddd
  • :books: I learned so much Japanese over the trip it’s crazy, and I’m glad DIO-Berry opened me up, because otherwise I’d just introvert my way through doing the bare minimum of talking to people necessary to have my goals met ^^
Doing things like 謎解き or following the local posters/writing for things has showed me things off the beaten path and my capabilities of Japanese were enough to not just understand the things that were happening around me, but also participate in them, like the hunt for the missing headphones in Sapporo ^^
    That was super cool!
  • :stopwatch: You might think my energy resources never run out, but I think 3 weeks of adventuring every day is a perfect amount of time for me - I didn’t have a single worse day, I was able to consistently walk as much as I did and return to the hotel room happy and energized to go out the next day, I have a feeling that if I added another 2 weeks or something, I’d probably just spend a few days with my nose buried down in a book section at Book-Off and not adventure as much, on May 16th I was already thinking like “yep, I think it’s time to take a rest” followed by “PERFECT TIMING, only two days left”, so I was able to get the energy reserves and adventure for the next two days ^^
  • Sleep is very important. Also, I can’t sleep on a plane really well. Also, the 37 hour long May 18th and having my suitcase be delayed was a perfect demonstration to me that I can use my resources to get myself awake and energized for a bit longer than 24 hours! Following by 11 hours of sleep though :stuck_out_tongue:
My internal sleeping clock is out of whack and I wonder how long am I going to sleep tomorrow ^^

Life

Berlin has an annual tradition of a thing called “Carnival of Cultures” where countries and organizations pitch their small cultural programs and perform it on streets, in front of tens of thousands, or maybe hundreds of thousands of people ^^

Today we had amazing weather to be able to participate in it!

Even though my friends have been raving about it for years, my group of friends that ended up meeting were all people that were seeing it for the first time, and let me tell you, it was crowded ^^

cooow and dragon C:

There were at least a few dozens of different representatives walking across the long winded Karl-Marx Allee in Berlin with all sorts of different performances!

I kinda regret not having brought my DSLR, but oh well ^^

Also, self-cleaning city! Assign a deposit on bottles and cans and the city will clean itself

Anyway, I’ll try to be catching up on the forum starting tomorrow again, so see you tomorrow! ^^

So this manga had significantly more text than the yesterday’s one, and this time it was seinen-adjacent, from the moment I saw the artcard for this chapter yesterday I was like “nnno” xddd

Fortunately though, no panel refers to what’s in the artcard, it’s a bit of a rowdy woman who argues

Bit of makeover chapter, bit of a rowdy personality character chapter, I liked how there was exactly one panel in the whole manga that was colored ^^

But no, this one didn’t ゆらゆら me either, so I stopped after reading the first one.

And if you’re wondering what the weird game title is, it’s the rhythm game from Square-Enix, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, Japanese title goes hard ^^

German

But today was probably a day of a bit more German than Japanese, because YouTube recommendation gave me a few vids and I was clicking over them ^^

First up, Minimoli did some streams of the new Yoshi game and she read lines inside of it, having people read lines from a game probably is my favorite way to learn phrases, so maybe I should do it with Japanese too ^^

Then, where are the discounts disappearing in German supermarkets? (into the apps!)

And then, water insecurity in Germany, why is tap water and sweet water a bit different ^^

I’m at this weird point in German where I understand almost everything in the videos but I’m like >:[ and if I’m jumping on a bike and I’m recommended a video in German, I’m like >:[ but take another video on Prediction Markets or the problem with AI girlfriends in English and I’m like >:]]]], I still feel as if I’m learning something from those English videos, but I’m very heavily gravitating towards low effort consumption content, maybe after the Japan trip, maybe it’s just fatigue, maybe it’s the burnout, who knows.

But I will be attempting to implement more of languages into my media consumption diet!

Life

A while back I complained about the revolt against car-free city in Berlin, and as that movement is imagining its fake opponents, another movement is gaining traction! Accessibility and mobility for sports in the city!
There are special sessions and trainings invented for people that have a specific degree of disability and can’t do things, and the sessions are made for free, which is really cool C:

…on the same note, this is the very first time ever I heard about something like a “queer job fair”, and in a way I’m interested in finding out what the jobs are…?

But yeah, today I finally went to the cinema and used my subscription for the first time in May, it’s weird to be subscribed unlimited and then be out for like, 5/6th of the month and not use it xdddd

But the subscription is yearly, so there’s ups and downs ^^

Amazing weather this time of the year, I wore sleeveless today (and felt weird because I like my sleeves, even with sunscreen I feel so naked around the shoulders xdddd)

See you tomorrow!

I’m so glad I could help and that you were able to have so many more adventures!! Whenever you come back, please let me know and we can hang out again of course

Well…. It was brought in here last year and it’s been going a bit less successfully:
