ahh, shopping for podcasts ^^
Well, had plenty of time to listen today, so I was just putting different things and trying to find out how much I understood, ほんのれんラジオ is really interesting: this is a sociological podcast from what I’ve understood that has a different topic in each topic block (each month?), and this block has started with New Year’s, where the conversation led into the ways to celebrate it in Japan, religions in Japan, then religions in the west, and then how religions influence people’s behaviors, such as Counter Culture, Cancel Culture, liberalism, genocide in Palestine, American exceptionism, Russian attack on Ukraine, I didn’t expect that a podcast led by two Japanese women would tackle so many different topics, and I’m really happy it did!
This podcast is at an intersection of “i understand what they’re saying, i’m interested in the topics, but i don’t necessarily know the topics themselves and I get a bit lost”, but the fact they were tackling so many different topics kept be glued listening, so I need to put some more effort into it now ^^
As for コミック百合姫, I was going really well today reading in public in a cinema until 彩純ちゃんはレズ風俗に興味があります! came up, and I scream once again, WHYYY does 百合姫 need to have porn inside of it, WHYYY ![]()
I mean, there is a story about intimacy and connection in it, bUT NOT WHEN THERE’S PEOPLE SITTING BEHIND ME LOOKING AT MY TABLET AS ADS FOR THE MOVIE ARE PLAYING xddd
Anyway though, before lesbian brothels though, this panel made me feel feelings and sold me on 現実世界でも幸せにしてくださいね, I enjoyed that story ^^
Life
If you didn’t tell me it was Berlin, I would’ve just said my hometown back in Poland ^^
Well, they still have snow ^^
I kinda lied to you about not having adventures today, I wanted to go bouldering, so I came back to the gym today! My hands have almost healed from the last time I climbed, so today I could climb the greens without too much effort, and the blues I’ve left for a different time. The one with purple rocks on the left was my favorite one I’ve done today ^^
also, GOODNIGHT BEAR ![]()
From the bouldering gym, I made my way to a Viernamese streetfood place and check their magnets out! It’s a really sweet collection ^^
So just a reminder that this isn’t a politically neutral study log, I did realize I feel a bit better when there’s something to unite under that makes me feel connected to the people around me ^^
And since I have the cinema subscription now, decided to watch two movies back to back, British 28 Years: The Bone Tower and Japanese-ish Rental Family ^^
Both of them are really cute fun for the whole family movies, I think I liked The Bone Temple better than the prequel, and one of my colleagues came to the exact same cinema at the same time as well! It’s a small world ^^
And Rental Family was really interesting, because I watched it with German subs and the movie would alternate between English and Japanese in the dialogue ^^
The Japanese sections had some keigo, but otherwise were really clear and understandable, and the movie had a theme of respect for time, things, pleaces, which is a very Japanese topic to consider, but the switches from English to Japanese to English to Japanese definitely didn’t feel organic and didn’t sound like someone who switches languages because they struggle more in a certain language with a specific thing ^^
The movie was also trying to exoticize Japan for a bit and convince the viewers that Japan does some things better than the western world, which is a topic I’m a little tired of in Japanese movies, but it was heartwarming and performances were mostly great ^^
Overall, The Bone Temple was great craic and Rental Family was a really interesting brain teaser switching between English, German and Japanese all the time C:
…but I stayed for a bit longer because as I realized as I was reading manga at the cinema, the cinema Rollberg has a regular event called “Creepy Crypt”, where each week they play a horror movie, either cult classic or a contemporary one, and then they judge how did people like it. And I decided to stay, because I’m already 4.5h at the cinema, why not xddd
They do their own podcast, they have their own speeches, their own letterboxd and their own votes!
The movie today was a surprise all the way until it started, and they wouldn’t tell you what you bought the (free, I have unlimited xddd) ticket for.
So the movie I watched today was
Primate! It didn’t come out in Germany yet, it was a sneak preview and they left us completely in the dark until the title card started rolling around. It was okay, the costumes and direction were spot on, unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the script ^^
Going out of the film, we had a survey where people were allowed to vote how much they liked the movie, and lo and behold ^^
I rated it “okay”, it’s a horror aight, I’m a huge fan of horrors ^^
So now that I know that Creepy Crypts are a thing, maybe I’ll be attending them every once in a while?
For now though, I’m jumping to sleep, because I still want to have that adventure tomorrow, so see you tomorrow! ^^
A friend of mine (who is definitely not me) may have read this a couple years ago for a combination of comedic value and prurient interest
. I remember liking it but I totally get why it’s not something you’d want to read in public. It’s just a bit absurd with its premise of finding a childhood friend/lost love by brothel surfing, but once you accept that it takes itself seriously enough to be interesting. It seemed like it was spinning its wheels after a while though.
I saw an ad for rental family a little while ago and it looked interesting, but it’s not surprising that it’s othering Japan a little to make its points about family and social structures. I wonder whether this was primarily Japanese people interested in showing cultural differences or Americans showing off how weird and different Japan is. It makes a little difference who is operating the movie for how it comes across.
Probably in part bc she has a new ongoing comic Obligatory Cover Page - Unchaptered | My Impossible Soulmate … Tho I think of the “dragon hrt” as post-Rain, since it’s literally post-Rain (but non-canon)
Ahhh yeah that’s the “here’s all the heavy trauma” chapter. Personal relatability aside, seeing where the characters were at the start of the story vs the end is really very incredible, as is the range of LGBT representation in the comic itself
I’m loving the current month’s
Great choices, tho I’ve been lukewarm on ぜんこわ in recent months. This month’s is about 580 pgs, with 2 one shots, and 14/18 that I actually read
Yeah it’s really excellent
Sounds interesting thx for mentioning
I mean the title tho… But hey maybe they’ll discover they have a sudden, newfound interest in yuri ![]()
Despite my allergy to harems, I’ve been enjoying this mostly (I did not know it was a harem when I started). Olivia particularly, and her willingness to set boundaries and stand up for herself has been very enjoyable
That’s what I love about it. Like yes, lots of sex. But also lots of other aspects to give it some depth and interest. The beginning of it is really ridiculous tho
It recently stopped doing this, bc Asumi & Mai finally found each other. Personally I’m really hoping for a poly ending, whenever the series gets there… But who knows

It’s just the “underworld”, but it’s such a fun word ^^
Today I’ve been going around manga sites and doing a completely opposite thing of reducing my digital 積読, I didn’t commit to anything yet, but seeing how five volumes of かぐや様 are free…
Also, because of 推しの子, I got reminded that cmoa has the best catalog of freebies and that’s why I made a scraper for it as one of the first ones ^^
But no, on Durtle’s Refuge we were arguing why does 推しの子 have so much text, I’d be just fine with less of it (and when I read in English, I want for more text to be present, because I love the context~)
In Bookwalker’s 読み放題 there is a magazine called B’s-LOG COMIC that has a METRIC TON of pages with every issue:
And, as a bit of trivia, I’ve never seen a demographic skew like that on Wikipedia:
I’m still not fujoshi, though I did dip my feet into otome a few times in the past ^^
Ahhh, Jack Jeanne ![]()
One day if I feel a little better, I should try to just subscribe to 読み放題 and then download everything I can afford over that time ![]()
Life
Made it to Pausify today for the first time this year!
kuuukiz…
For the people that didn’t bring their own books, they proposed to do some journaling, which I’ve probably already done too much of, so I decided not to take one ![]()
You know you’ve done too much journaling if you’re stuck waiting for things happening any momen t now… any moment… and then the moment simply doesn’t come ^^
But yeah, finished コミック百合媛 there, met a person from Palestine who moved to Berlin recently, he seemed to be really good at regulating his emotions, he looked like the most content person I’ve seen in a while ![]()
Aside from that, it’s almost spring here!
I hope that the snow returns though ^^
VERY BIG DUK
And yeah, my nose is full and I’ve gone through a few dozen tissues, so I’ve treated myself to a soul-warmer and I hope that tomorrow I’ll be a bit warmer inside ^^
See you tomorrow!
Hello bidoof just checking in I hope you’re doing well take care out there
That image made me crave insuline lol that looks so tasty
I have a question ![]()
When you write your daily logs do you write it all at once at the end of the day or have an ongoing draft where you add bits as they happen? (follow up if it’s number 2, do you keep the draft here or in a notes app or something)
most of the time i just do all of my reviews to be sure that i’ve had all of my japanese knowledge before logging it out, and then i look at the alarm clock and the time depleting in my sleep before work, and then i go like “yeah sure i can afford to spend 15 minutes writing things down”, after which i spend 25 minutes writing things down and another amount of time catching up on the forums regardless
not the most sustainable strategy, but when i arrive really late and need to wake up earlier, i just try to clarify that “hey guys, i need to wake up early tomorrow” and write it a bit shorter, but you can absolutely get into the rhythm of doing this and the fact i aggregate all my thoughts just before going to sleep does count as mindfulness/meditation practice
most of the days i absolutely don’t think about the study log at all at 4pm, 6pm, 8pm or anything, so no drafts, no thinking “hmm this japanese thing would be useful for my study log”, it’s just a before-sleeping routine ^^
Ah neat, thankle dankle
I’m a few days behind here but this XD video is absolute gold. I love the internet. I love that people spend so much effort researching and producing great videos on such niche cultural references. Amazing find.
could be worse xddd
(they did warn me though, hi @Midnightblue! hope you’re having fun up there ^^)
truly one in a million on the internet ^^

lessons in english language with a witch:
The story in episode 2 and 3 took a bit of a different angle I expected from the first one, I thought it’d be more about the relationship between the two protagonists, and instead it’s two protagonists facing the wind and both answering to the real world in their own different ways. What I really appreciate though is that 槙生 and 朝 are both going through their moments of separation and then converging with one another, and 朝 seems to be so surprised about this, I’m really happy 槙生 is teaching her the secure relationship style though
![]()
君に届け volume 2 I found pretty weird to follow, because for a while nothing was happening, and then EVERYTHING STARTED HAPPENING in the last two chapters ^^
I kinda miss not being a part of a book club and reading whatever made me go “UuuUuUuUUuUu” today instead of being confined to something I already threw my eyes on ^^
Though, if I stay by this rule, then I’ll probably never read ナナ or ちはやふる, so sometimes constraints are also important ^^
And on Bunpro, first time in a while, just had a review pile without a single wrong answer, maybe leeches become a bit easier if you keep going over and over again ^^

Heissa, wooden market?
I did grab my German certificate from the B1 exam today! Will be useful for the citizenship application, once it finally starts ^^
I went and looked at some German manga today, and look, that’s the exact same volumes of 推しの子 I’ve read in Japanese today! Also, at work, we work with internationalization sometimes, and I know that German is the most verbose language that we have to test for, while Japanese is one of the lightest ones, and we’ve talked a bit about コナン being very verbose on Durtle’s Refuge… Well, here’s how コナン looks like in German, the text doesn’t fit the textboxes, so they just cut in the middle of the words, like in the bottom right panel where hängen needed to be moved to a different part of the page ^^
Anyway, clothing trends also start reflecting spring now ^^

There used to be a volunteering organization in Berlin called “Give Something Back To Berlin”, but according to the organizers, it sounded a bit too call-to-actiony and a bit too intimidating, so they renamed it to Hejmo ^^
The reason why I bring it up is that they have a lot of programs ran by volunteers where people, for free, can gather together and learn different skills together, do things together, and so on. I participated in their workshops a bit in 2024, so decided to give them a visit today again~
…aaaand took guitar classes with them! The “intermediate level”, today we were improvising in the G-major scale, with G+D+C+C chord loop in the background ^^
I haven’t played guitar in a few months at least, but it’s a bit like with a bicycle, that if you remember how to hold E once, you’ll always be able to hold E, if you don’t know how to hold F, you’ll keep on not knowing how to hold F xddd
It was really fun either way, maybe there is a timeline for me somewhere where I become a regular at their guitar classes, sigh.
I still miss the everyday instrument practice thread Mitrac made me join a while back, and then I never did well at it ^^
Either way, see you tomorrow!
that reminds me - I’m almost done with my cello origin story for you ![]()
that hejmo group sounds so fun
but I love how that word I’m not even sure how to pronounce and doesn’t tell me anything about it should be more approachable ![]()
Catching up
Luckily, I managed to warn you in time. ![]()
But yes, I’ve had a lot of fun going through your older posts those past days. I did not expect your log to escalate quickly from Japanese and German study to language study + a plethora of activities log, or as I like to call it: “The Adventures of GolyBidoof”.
Really like the “chaotic good” energy, as Malinkal put it many posts ago, and am looking forward to reaching the latest updates. ![]()

Well yeah, I’m going to be real, today wasn’t a great day in terms of Japanese ^^
I’m at least glad I was able to motivate myself to do some manga late, but even that came with a substantial degree of revenge bedtime procrastination
Anime is in motion, and manga are still frames, and both of them have something unique to offer ^^
Though, the manga definitely feels more empty than the anime world, which is a bit fitting considering the content matter
I’m really curious how will 朝’s imagination shots look like ^^
Life
Well that’s because I had a lot of things going on in life today ^^
I did go to the manga/weaboo store today to collect all of the manga freebies they had from the German publishing markets ^^
bonzai trees~
I met up with a friend today to go for a variation of a hot pot, known as a mào cài ^^
The list of the ingredients was just incredibly large ^^
And yeah, some talks, some oversharing, mahjong tiles, some tasty foods C:
But the main attraction was seeing a Ukrainian/Russian movie in the cinema, Two Prosecutors:
It was very deeply coded in the Soviet culture from the 1930s (and all the way to 1970s at least probably) and I needed to explain some of the jumps in logic to the friend who absolutely did not know how the Soviet regime worked ^^
When I saw this card, I was like “gee, how do you express that solida-”
…and then I realized it was a Ukrainian movie shown in a German theater xdd
Either way, the acting and the casting was spot on, we watched it with German subs and I’d probably rate it something like Natively Level 40 if that was a thing for German movies xddddd
Then we went to greet Shakespeare, a gift from the true CITY OF LONDON, what is such a celebrity doing in Berlin xdd
And we went to his place to watch some bizarre YouTube recommendations, like Lasagna Cat, YouTube music playlists for African Dictators, BobbyBroccoli, you know the drill xddd
Amazing video by the way, about a terrible mayor of assimilated Toronto and implications of the city devouring all of the neighboring cities ^^
Either way, see you tomorrrow!
I thought Natively had German though?? Does it only have books and not movies? :o
it does have movies too, but this wasnt a German movie, or a movie in German, it was a movie in Ukrainian/Russian with German subtitles ^^

no, it’s not a drill, we have a new canine at WaniKani ![]()
It was my first time learning a new radical on WaniKani with an illustration, and since this lesson is coming so long after my last lesson, i devoted something like 10x as much attention to this item as to the ones i’ve been learning towards the end of the course ^^
In terms of reading, a bit better today than yesterday, but I was out almost the whole day, so just read ~100 pages of manga today and that was it ![]()
…no, but I can upload it to WaniKani forums, nice try ^^
I didn’t do any listening today, sadly ^^
Life
Just a quick update because I wake up really soon again ![]()
Went to the book club today! I had a tea in a mug from the Christopher Street Day 2003 pride parade, which at this point it’s like an ephemera, queer time works a bit differently, this is like a hundred years ago at this point ^^
Also, it was from Cologne, and it’s pretty funny how the CSD 2003 text had 7 characters instead of 6, so they needed to invent the seventh color (of a rainbow) too ^^
Got meself a new pin as well ^^
And today we didn’t talk books that much, except for this one, Notes of a Crocodile ^^
Again, pushing lesbian things here, apparently it’s the most popular Taiwanese lesbian novel from the 90s, and that touched on the cross-section of the western civilization and Chinese culture, back at the times when Taiwan wasn’t very accepting of the same sex marriages yet, so if it’s something you’re interested in, give it a shot!
So yeah, time to head off then…
…see you tomorrow ^^
Just popping in to say that I found your study log from your mention of コミック百合姫 in the Bookwalker Freebies thread and I’ve been enjoying your updates! Your life updates are bringing back many fond memories of Deutschland from years ago. ![]()
Looking forward to checking out 違国日記 also, though I’ll probably opt for the anime first while I work through my massive reading list…
Eey I am glad somebody else got to like Bidoof’s life log, I hope you have a good day mate! Awesome sauce pfp
