I could’ve gone all the way to the end of the magazine, but internet devoured me, so revenge bedtime procrastination machine is back up xdd

AnyWAY
瑠璃の宝石 immediately reminded me of Mitrac for some reason xddd

it’s a manga about rare mineral hunters that are rambling about different stones and their properties, and one really cool thing, the knowledge actually does seem accurate and interesting too

in the chapter that i’ve read, they even are able to find some trace amounts of platinum in a river, so that’s really cool

though it was the 10th chapter, it did feel as if every chapter can have its own small self-contained story, and the vocabulary was really specific and a lot of words I’ve never seen before, but it just felt like, FUN, so if you’re seeing this Mitrac, for some reason I thought of you when I saw this one ^^

Special highlights to レフティ・ワズ・ヒア, doesn’t have any volumes yet, but when I was reading the pan-European Manga Issho, the Running Wild comic has a very distinct artstyle in there and this one immediately reminded me of it ^^

WHAT A WILD MANGA

it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever read in Japanese, probably still easier than ピアノ and ふつつかな悪女, but I just kept on highlighting so many expressions with Yomitan being like “WHAT DOES IT MEAN TELL ME”
it does look like japanese, but it feels very distinct from the regular prose ^^

Either way, I’m so down with this magazine now! The second half really surprises me in ways I didn’t anticipate ^^

So, no, I did lie, we had a lot of family meetups today and there will be one tomorrow xdd

Good news, lots of nice decorations and food!

Bad news, very much sedimentary staying with other people and just, making up for the lost time as intensively as you can over the limited time ^^

Afterwards, me and my mom found some time to finish the fifth season of Emily in Paris, woop, it was a bit better than the other ones, I felt xdd
We gave a fancy little projector to see the show on the wall, so it does feel a little EXQUISITE~

And one stuff about revenge bedtime procrastination, I did manage to subscribe to the ガレット magazine on a “normal” tier! It makes me eligible to have my nickname printed out in the next issue of the magazine, No. 37, so I have become an official supporter of Yuri manga!

truth to be said, I really struggle with the idea of “digital ownership” of things, mostly because I come from a network of people who would freely share online things, so if I think of manga, it’s either physical or freely shared, that’s why it was a little easier for me to convince myself to just make a recurring donation to their magazine, aaand be able to get a PDF document while at that ^^

I’m still working on this though ^^

ハルタ! I had great fun reading it, the last story had a pretty neat linguistic gimmick in it, read right t left xddd

東京城址女子高生, this could also be a really interesting manga imo ^^

I tried reading the panels and there was one about “what’s the hobby you spend the most money on” and it’s so cute to compare cross-culture answers to this question ^^

I’m officially at 7/8, finished the Gokinjo Monogatari today ^^

it’s a very loud manga and a lot of things are going on, and it keeps you excited with things, until suddenly, out of nowhere, it hits you with solemnity train and a lot of feelings of being trapped, wanting something else of life, just to be replaced with cheers and laugh and hugs the very next page

It’s a bit of a blink it, and you’ll miss it, and luckily my proficiency of German gives me enough guidelines to figure out where the solemn parts are ^^

And I’m a bit scared about 成瀬は天下を取りにいく, because my physiological reaction to reading prose in Japanese is that it takes just a few pages for my eyes to magically start closing down, even if I’m rested up and I slept well
Of course, that’s understandable because of the level of cognitive load and trying to keep up with all of the story threads, but I found it really difficult to make a dent in this book in a significant way, wHICH I SHOULD STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT BECAUSE THE CHALLENGE IS ONLY OPEN UNTIL MY HOLIDAYS END (on january 5th? xdd)

either way, just one title to go, let’s see how far I take it ^^

More family! This part of the family has kids, and kids are just so fun creative to be around C:

we made a LEGO AXOLOTL TOGETHER (omg look at this beauty C:)

We called him cookie, but that’s spoilers xdd

Too much food, not enough physical activity, but it’s always very nice to have something on the table ^^

And also, the same kid had all characters from K-Pop Demon Hunters printed out and he was teaching me the character names (at first i didn’t tell him i watched the movie, i made him explain it to me xddd)

and by the end of the day, i fueled all the kids’s curiosity with a brand new hobby, clicking too many cookies and producing tens of thousands of them a second xddd

I’ll try to get some more 成瀬は天下を取りにいく reading done tomorrow, hopefully my fatigue will start waning off a bit, so see you tomorrow ^^

you probably figured this out - issue 81 is a る issue (so there are no た series in it), and the order of publication generally goes like this: は issue, then る issue, then た issue. Although I think there might be an exception coming up in the 80s, not sure.

All right, big decisions, my Satori Reader runs out on January 4th and I won’t be renewing it!

I kept it subscribed for a month longer, but not even this month was enough to start properly focusing on the underlying grammar tricks and even to follow the stories adequately, so I will be on a lookout for alternate means how to get my reading/listening comprehension up, because Satori Reader isn’t working that well for me xddd

I remember somebody around the forum made an estimate that Satori Reader stories are like Natively Level 22-24 prose, to which I don’t know if I wholly agree, because a lot of stories are formatted in a way where you have a sentence that looks so simple it almost feels artificial, and then suddenly in the middle of this sentence, there’s like two-three words that are either the top 55000th most used Japanese word or even not exist in JMDict at all, and then it just won’t be highlighted and you’ll go like “HEY, THAT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE THE DIFFICULT PART OF THE SENTENCE” xdd

Satori Reader is a very demotivating part of my review routine right now, because there are really high odds on each of the chapters that I:

• don’t remember the yesterday’s one, or
• see that the new episode starts in a weird place and i don’t know how is it related to the previous chapters without looking it up, or
• play the audio of expecting to understand something, go through a paragraph and ask myself what i understood, and i understood every grammar structure and almost all of the words, but i have no idea what the paragraph was about, or
• finish a chapter and not understand why was the current deliberation divided into two separate POVs across two separate chapters that i don’t see a logical connection between the two, or
• all of the above xddd

I’m almost done with all of the stories too, so maybe let’s wait for some more stories to build up and maybe my reading comprehension will go up until then

though december on satori reader has been pretty rough to me ^^

Funnily enough, I find different things to be difficult between physical and digital versions, the difficult one in physical is understanding the words, the difficult one in ttsu is maintaining focus and stamina xddd

Today definitely wasn’t a good day of Japanese for me xddd
Aside from the usual drowsiness when attempting to read in Japanese, I think the second story was much better than the first and the third in the 成瀬は天下を取りにいく book and I’m struggling bouncing off from the third story and working on reading comprehension and wanting to care about the characters as well

The second story did involve traditional performances on a cultural festival with all of the covid-related social distancing related things, and I did use Yomitan quite a lot, because the 漫才 was using a lot of words and even concepts I’ve never heard about, and there were some parts when I was looking at a sentence and was like “uhh”, and then took it to DeepL and I was like “UHHH”, 膳所からゼゼカラ mvp name though ^^

The third story is a class reunion with people having made it in life after a few decades, and the story tries to make me care about マサル but as soon as conversations about their adult lives happen, my attention just drifts off and I’m finding it hard to follow
I wonder how will 成瀬 tie into the third story, though the main character of the book is the closed down 西武大津店 regardless ^^

I REALLY WANT TO JUST BE DONE WITH THIS BOOK/CHALLENGE

it’s seeping my life force away from me and i know it’s just a stamina issue and i can see on myself that i’m overcoming the stamina issues by attempting to read it, but i was having trace amounts of fun on second story and i’m having not much fun at all on the third one xdd

I bought the Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course extension for Chase Colburn’s Kanji Study Android app! It’s at the end-of-the-year discount right now and I paid less than €15 for both of the sets, which in my opinion is a really good value

The lessons on WaniKani will finally end in a week…

…and if Satori Reader is going away as well, the KLC for N2 kanji could serve as a good introduction into reading more difficult things, PLUS practice for any potential N2, but I’ll probably delay introducing this into my routine a bit

I genuinely hope this is the last day I still haven’t finished the book yet, but I discovered my Japanese reading abilities increase significantly when I’m listening to lofi beats on noise cancelling headphones, so yes, it is a matter of flow and getting the right headspace

Fourth story, about the 東大 university was my absolute favorite one so far, there was a bit of “will she-will she not” in there, there were buildings and places I recognized (and even been in!) and 成瀬 developed as a character by being presented from a less flattering POV

The fifth story I started now is about prefectures competing in かるた, here’s a quote from chapter four though xdd

I booked the train tickets back to Berlin for December 31st, will celebrate the New Year’s in Berlin ^^

And yeah, since I’m not that far away from leaving Poland again, some bookstore updates from Poland! Heaven Official’s Blessings have made it over here! Well, same for Chris Broad, but they didn’t get the pun from his name and only translated it as “Englishman in Japan”, which, booo xdd

Something I’ve not really seen happen before in a while is that the YA section recommendations in Empik are 5/9 Polish! There was a point in time where Polish authors were almost completely eradicated from the bookstores, and now they’re picking up again. I’m actually curious to go and visit a Thalia now to look at how does the ratio look like in there

this way to louisiana, the other way to the US, damn, the US is the land of the rising sun in the east or something

And yep, Nurnberg, very depressing movie and very raw, Rami Malek gave a really good performance and we sat in the chairs for good five minutes after the credits started rolling ^^

The fun word I found today when getting through the book xdd

Today’s Jelly Jelly Radio was a top3 celebration including different digital and board games of the year, and they called SETI the board game of the year:

I saw a box of this game in Thalia, but I never ended up playing it, maybe next year ^^

I found it funny that when せんな was talking about video games of the year, he named “Escape from Tarkov” as one of his favorites, and when describing the game, he described it as PvPvE: player vs player vs envament ^^
For some reason, my headcanon when I was listening to せんな was that his English was really good, but さきこ was the one who studied abroad and she was able to understand what せんな was talking about and say 環境, so fun episode ^^

ちっち邸のゆるっとゲーム雑談: the host speaks even faster than さきこ when she’s fired up, I found them through a Spotify recommendation algorithm and hoped they’d cover Pokemon and Switch video games, but in the episode i listened 15 minutes of, they didn’t get to any video games yet ^^

I DID IT :DDDDDDDDD

The moment I finished the book, my strongest emotion wasn’t “excitement”, it was “relief”, that I don’t have to read it anymore and that it’s no longer on my bucket list and 積読: today’s reading felt pretty stressful, because I was in a car and even with noise-cancelling headphones and lofi beats at full volume, I couldn’t filter out the sounds of radio (that my mom needed, because there were reports about collisions, spoilers for life btw xdddd)

But as the time from finishing the book went on and I started doing more research about 成瀬: I realized how influential that title is, and that I was succesfully propagandized by a manga about a girl who’s outdoors and likes her home place pretty much xddd

Consider this a 成瀬 special, at 6am in the morning the next day C:

The series has three books right now, the last one came out fairly recently:

And the series has sold multiple mililon copies, which alone in itself is pretty crazy
but when I was going through the Amazon reviews, this is when I started having the WAIT A MINUTE moment:

As it turns out, the book promoted the city of 大津 to the point that they prepared an actual map of places mentioned in the book you can look at, including the ミチガン boat trip I mentioned in the last post!

Not even that, there is going to be a manhole of 成瀬 that is about to open up in a month in 大津:

The author of the books, 宮島未奈, even made it to the meeting with the town council to promote both her book and the local culture as well!

The more I started looking into this, the more I started grinning, it’s so cool that the book made it so big, and the feeling of “I DONT WANT TO JAPANESE EVER AGAIN” got replaced with “uuu, that’s an interesting news article” xddd

Gdańsk, Poland!

It’s actually a part of an urban area called “Trójmiasto”, tricity, between Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, but today only Gdańsk was visited ^^

Today it did actually snow, and snow is pretty rare in Gdańsk, which brought a beautiful aura to the city C:

It’s the harbor city of Poland, known for really pretty building facades, tall buildings, as you would see in Western European cities, and was a big point of contention for the Second World War ^^

Look at those beauties C:

Another thing that Gdańsk is known for is that it’s a city of amber, and you can both buy the cheapest and the most expensive amber you’ll ever see in this city as well - that’s where all of my amber jewelry is from ^^

We went for a flat visit for the friend of a family, and it was pretty wholesome C:

But on the way back, there was a HUGE traffic accident and we stood in a traffic jam for almost seven hours, here’s a news story in Polish

Adventure bit though, police gave us some free drinks, that was really nice of them C:

Problem being, the snow never stopped falling and kept falling and falling, so when we finally were let go from this huge jam after 4am, there were still a few inches of snow and you couldn’t see asphalt anywhere that you were going

That time, we still had 100km away from Ciechanów, and… it’s 6:25am and we’re standing behind a flixbus that we absolutely cannot do anything about. Mom went to sleep and I might have to switch in for her if the Flixbus starts… but it won’t start for a while.

Our train to Berlin leaves in less than five hours.

We’re 40 kilometers away from Ciechanów.

It’s freaking scary xddd

I’m making this one extra long not to fall asleep, but this is a good point to finish this post, so see you tomorrow, wherever we end up tomorrow xddd

it’s also been happening in some other places i know, but in Poland, the bus companies are very arrogant and they can go like “well people will still use us and not flixbus if we lower the price” and they are right for a big part, I’m still team trains though ^^

After reading a book for a while, it feels so easy to go back to manga and just flow with the whole volumes~

I’ve read 130 volumes of manga, 2 books and 1 short story over the course of 2025, mostly from July on ^^
I might do a proper breakdown one day ^^

Of course, the mangas I read today were the easier ones, but I kinda wanted to go through my digital 積読 pile and attempt to clear out my Mokuro folders

It’s really nice that Mokuro syncs between devices now, so you can view the same manga and progress too, so one cool thing I read today was the name for the sleeping bags in Japanese:

Yes, it’s シュラフ, from German, schlafen xddd

New story on Satori Reader, 母, I’ll probably save it until I resub it, but I was curious to read the first episode today:

and it didn’t come with a difficulty spine, it feels nice ^^

Eeehehe. I was still so young and full of optimism when that picture came out xdd

As the brightness increased and we faded back into day, the snow was everywhere and the bus didn’t move a single meter, so passenger cars carved a new belt in the road where they wanted to get ahead of the buses and trucks and try to empty the road to Warsaw…

…what they didn’t realize is that over Mława, 56 centimeters of snow fell down over night, meaning… uh oh.

Me and my mom did a lot of pushing of other cars today, we learned a lot about innertia and our goal was to make it back home by 10am, which was going pretty well for a while, until the corridor we as passenger cars have unlocked started leading us to more rural roads without any snow removal, and uh oh. The car got stuck deep in snow.

We called for a person to help us out and dig us out of the troubles, and we did make it back home, but by 1pm, after 17 hours in a car. Going to Berlin at this point was off the table, both too late and we were way too dead xddd

We got some snacks and made some donations to Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy this year:

Went to sleep for just a few hours, and woke up to us doing the part and in exchange for getting the car out, installing a light fixture in the friend’s flat xddd

Happy New Year not in Berlin, woo xddd

Oh, wow, I can’t imagine being stuck on the road in snow for that long! Glad you made it somewhere safe, even if it wasn’t back in Berlin. Also, Gdańsk looks quite lovely!
