Don’t have much time right now but popped in to close the start date poll when I remembered and a split vote between the beginning and end of the month is very awkward! Will deal with that soon but it’s really late here so I’ll save that for tomorrow.
Pretty easy tie on the character count, we can work around that no problem.
To be honest it’s hard to have a great answer on this start date tie. What I want to say is for those who only voted later days and who I know are busy like @MissDagger and @anon99047008 it seems most accessible to go for the later date (assuming no one has things coming up later they’re trying to get in front of but that seems less likely; this is a long club). I’m also biased because I wanted a later date though
Thoughts?
The only downside I can see to starting later is that some people would lose interest. Considering the majority of people voting yes to read this are book club veterans, and several vn club veterans. I don’t think that is much of a danger.
On the other hand, for those that voted later, they probably are busy until then (I certainly am), and falling behind within the first couple of weeks, might mean not getting started and reading with the club at all. Momentum is a wonderful thing to get regular with something, and that gets lost.
For me personally? If this starts on the 2nd, I’m probably out because right there is where 4 weeks of busy-ness starts. And I’m not sure I can shove in starting this if I’m perfectly honest.
I personally don’t mind. I voted earlier cause I was eager and ready to start our second VN after Loopers and I still am, but if waiting a bit more means more participation and less people dropping out over time then sure, I think it’s a good trade-off. I can read or play other stuff in the meantime.
It’s our first time doing nominations/voting while the club is running so a bit of wonkiness was expected right? It got us a bit off guard. Now in hindsight the next round we can start moving everything ahead of time so that we can start a new one earlier similar to other clubs, it’s all good.
We also have some new people which is great! I’d love to hear their and everyone elses’s opinion ^^ .
I picked up Planetarian HD to read during the break, but I don’t particularly care either way. The holiday week will be bad for me, but I’m sure that’ll be more free time for someone else. If there are students seriously studying for finals or maybe even the JLPT that might be a consideration, though.
Alright yeah, appreciate the input! Everyone is kind of mirroring the way I was thinking about it. And since I’m gonna be running it, would definitely be easier on me starting the 30th. Heavily leaning that way barring any strong objection (and another 2nd vote, @AzusaChan , also voted the 30th).
Apologies for the delay! Can’t promise next time will be a graceful transition either since we may have to work things out with the other club and it’s a whole new big challenge there, but we’ll work it out. When we get these running a little more smoothly I might need to see about switching off to other leaders the way book clubs run, but we’ll think about that later.
The 30th works fine for me! I got other stuff I’m currently reading so I don’t mind starting at a later date if it helps other people out.
I can start anytime, latest would be most convenient as I started reading Tsukihime and I might finish around that time
Technically never made this explicit so figured I should pop in (or should have days ago hah). We’ll be starting on the 30th!
The existence of a day system intrigues me, but since it’s hard to have full information on the lengths of those and where it goes to, I imagine we’re going to have to simply aim for that 10-12.5k character count each week. This puts us nebulously around 11-14 weeks. Unless we come up with any other ideas, we’ll have to have someone who finishes the week early who is counting characters look for a reasonable stopping point and share it in the thread. It’s not a pretty system but there’s not a ton to work with. I’ll make an effort but have been busy and only slipping in a few thousand characters read per day in my VN recently (hoping I can read this one faster since it’s allegedly easy), so I can’t promise that person is always going to be me.
As for choices, there’s not too much, but apparently first a bad end is inevitable and then you restart with choices. The spoiler only covers game structure, but if you want to avoid knowing that, just know you don’t have to deal with this topic for a bit and I’ll do my best to share info in the weekly threads when it’s relevant.
I just noticed that jpdb has a chronological vocabulary list
I’m not sure, how helpful/accurate this is, but I thought I might as well mention it here for everybody else to see and check out if they feel like it (…if this has been mentioned before somewhere else please kindly ignore my post, a quick search of this thread didn’t reveal such a thing ^^')
I’ve put in about 2 weeks of work on their list sorted by frequency and while my new account has mostly been reviewing WK content, I’ve also seen quite a few new words that definitely lined up with what I saw in the first few days worth of gameplay.
One of the interesting things I’ve noticed is that with certain things blacklisted (they have options for things like particles and obvious katakana) I’ll only need about 2 months of time to cover the unique words that are used more than once which lines up nicely with our timeline. (~1.1k words, 20 words/day for their default pace). It’s certainly an interesting platform for people that have stopped using or finished WK.
Edit: I should point out that I’ve seen some obvious oddities as adamstan points out below. For example the character Miyako Kujou getting the wrong card despite it having a name in the search. They actually list the sources on their about page which are the usual suspects like jmdict. For people using Jisho, rikaikun, or yomichan’s popular J-E dictionaries this is something that we just kind of have to put up with unfortunately. Readers advanced enough to use monolingual dictionaries are probably better of to use a custom mining approach instead.
The lists on jpdp seem to be generated automatically, so for example with words written only in kana, they sometimes pick the wrong homonym, ignoring the context. They also have problems with contractions from casual speech etc.
I have found two such errors in lists for Aonatsu Line - first was そんじゃ, which was contraction of それじゃ, but jpdb listed it as 尊者. The other one was メッセ, which in VN was shortening of messenger/messages, but they picked the “exhibition fair” translation for their list
There’s both. I reckon you dont have the enable all meanings by default setting checked
That’s possible.
However, I’d still argue that those are not different meanings of single word, but two words, that happen to be homonyms. And in the context of the game, only the last meaning is correct, if it’s meant as a word list to help with reading the VN.
(In the whole game there wasn’t a single instance of メッセ being used as “fair/exhibition”)
Of course, those are only minor errors in the grand scheme of things, and I don’t doubt, that many people will find those lists useful anyways But it would be nice, if someone checked them with context in mind - especially when we’re dealing with language so sensitive to context
Just giving this a little bump in case someone happens to discover it last minute, since we start next Friday . The game is currently on sale for PC with a -50% discount on Steam.
So, i should remember to put up the week 1 thread hopefully, but it’ll be later on Friday. I’m away from the computer for a few days and will be traveling on Friday. Should’ve posted it early but the date snuck up on me. I have at least 3 groups doing things I have to organize kind of like this. Against my will I always seem to become the one leading stuff haha. Haven’t read Japanese at all in a few weeks either oops
No worries! Also, I hear you on the accidentally leading things I hadn’t meant to and didn’t really want to. I’ve spent most of my adult life getting a routine together to avoid that.
Not saying I mind leading things. I don’t when I care about it and want it. But I don’t wanna lead something just because no one else is willing to step up (and I don’t really want to for reason(s)).
So did we end up deciding betweek 10k and 12.5k chararacters where there is a good break (if possible) basically? As a Switch reader, I will need a screenshot to have any idea of when I reach the right place. xD
Yeah… that Splatoon 3 thing I mentioned in my study log rapidly accelerated from “I want a few friends to play with” to “We are a competitive team entering our first (very low level) tournament in January” and I do really want to have the team now but being the leader just ended up happening because things only proceed when I initiate them. No worries though.
Yeah, I don’t think any better idea came up. Screenshots to coordinate will be crucial. Looking unlikely I can be early on week 1 to perform that role so it’ll be open ended to the best judgment of our quick readers – wish I had a better solution but I’m sure we’ll manage it.
What if we did something like aim for x characters, but only do discussion for the completed segments? I took a quick character count of the first few “days” in the prologue before and the counts all ended up super awkward
So what I’m suggesting would be along the lines of
Week 1: Read and discuss the intro, readers should have made good progress on 4/18
Week 2: Read and discuss 4/18 and 4/19, readers should have made a little progress on 4/20
Week 3: Finish reading 4/20 and discuss.
It’s a little confusing, but would avoid discussion ending up at awkward spots mid ‘chapter’ while being able to roughly maintain a pace. Regardless, it’s already 12/29 so I’ll probably get off my butt and start reading today.
Seems doable? Minor downside of it being a little confusing and only discussing earlier parts than we’ve reached but it does make the divisions much cleaner so I’m not opposed. We’d need someone looking ahead the whole way though, so that I can know which section I’m posting for that week.
