I finished reading the first day/intro earlier and got around 6,634 characters for that segment. There’s a bit of wonkiness I’m having with textractor where I need to use an extension to remove duplicated sentences and characters, but every now and then it results in something being cut out of the hooked text. So contrary to my first click through these number might be marginally underestimated.
Day 2 (4/18) I haven’t read yet, but I went ahead and compiled screenshots and character counts for every section with a unique background image (various zoom/pan camera shenanigans are treated as the same background). Reading to ~10k characters would be about 3,366 characters into day 2 or the scene on row 17 below. Shortly before this point the teacher calls the protagonist into the classroom. Alternatively, finishing up this screen and the following one ends up another ~2k characters up before transitioning to an afternoon screen back in the protagonist’s home, but also very close to the end of chapter.
Obviously there’s spoilerinos in the spreadsheet, so don’t open this if you want to go in blind.
I’ve been playing with it for a little bit and I’m having some weird issues too. By default Textractor gave two usable hooks:
The first one is the one you’re mentioning I think, it manages to pick most of the text although misses some parts and it duplicates text, making the use of extensions mandatory. It also pastes junk whenever you open the backlog which is not ideal if you’re anything like me and open it constantly to grab audio for flashcards.
Another one seemed relatively good, it didn’t give duplicated text and it also didn’t paste junk in the backlog. However it missed the first character of every sentence, and while that’s not an issue in dialogues because that first character is always 「 , it sucks that it cuts the first word of descriptions.
After those I’ve been able to find a hook that worked flawlessly, picked everything correctly, no pasted junk, no repetitions, all good. The only negligible issue is that it didn’t count multiple lines in the HTML file (pasted sentences were always counted as one line) but I don’t care about that at all personally, I like to see the character count but I never check the lines anyway cause it’s useless to me. However it’s so weird because it somehow breaks when you reopen Textractor + the game, it doesn’t work anymore on restart and you have to hook it again, and depending on the text I’m not able to find it. I can save the hook, but on restart it’s gone again.
I’ll keep researching and tweaking to see if I find any solution. If I can find a way to find that one hook and make it stick permanently that would be great .
If anyone wants to check and try this hook I’m talking about I found it at the very beginning of the game, just a few windows in (I’ve been trying to make Textractor work and haven’t really read anything yet ). Hiding it just in case someone doesn’t want to see absolutely anything from the game yet, but it doesn’t contain any spoilers anyway. It should work in other places too depending if Textractor is able to find it.
In this scene I opened Textractor and clicked on “search for hooks” → OK → tick checkbox for JP text → Search for specific text → typed 天が指し示した方を見ると and clicked OK. It’s one of the hooks that pastes the text just like it appears in the game divided in lines. It seems like a perfect hook so far, I was skipping text forward just to see if it broke or missed anything but it didn’t. However it sucks that it disappears when you save it and reopen it. Hopefully one of us can make it work or finds a way that isn’t such a pain to set up regularly.
It’s also so weird, sometimes the game displays the text in white and sometimes in yellow. I kinda don’t like the yellow font pls gib back white.
I haven’t had any issues with the text hook so far (no characters being cut off and I can view the backlog without it pasting all of that into the hook). If anyone is curious, these are the settings I use for this game
The regex filter isn’t needed for this game (I just have it on by default for some other VNs). If your hook doesn’t display the B:820:2B4600:2B65DA:1A: hook you can click on “Add Hook” and manually add it. Hopefully it helps anyone having issues.
The yellow text indicates that it is previously read text while the white text is unread stuff. I do agree the yellow text is annoying
I’ll give that setup a try later. I was using the remove repeated phrases 2 extension and maybe that was part of my issue. As for the white/yellow text you can disable it in the settings.
edit: actually let me try again, I think it bugged, will report in a minute.
edit2: nope, it doesn’t seem to appear for some reason. It does go through but it doesn’t display in the hooks list.
I closed my game after that and then restarted it and now I have a completely different hook. I did another restart and got a different hook again so I’m not sure if something is wrong with the game but I guess the hooks aren’t consistent? I didn’t think to verify that before my last post since I haven’t seen that in other VNs before. The hook numbers are different every time I open the game but if I scroll through them I’m able to find one that works the same way. Not sure if everyone else is having the same issue? I’m able to find a working hook each time at least but I guess it is slightly annoying having to scroll through them every time
Yeah it’s kinda weird, I don’t even get the default ones I mentioned I got before now, all the ones I got are useless . Damn elusive hook. It’s looking a lot like I’ll need to manually search text and spend a minute every time I open the game, which is not ideal, but… ;-;
I’ll keep looking into it regardless a bit later. Perhaps it’s part of the mystery vibe of the VN?
It’s here! I’ve been editing so many titles and thread bits nestled into other related threads. Probably forgot and made a mess of everything! Unfortunately I can’t start reading til tomorrow but I’m excited to see it. Thanks a lot for the assistance getting things prepared, everyone. This club is hard to coordinate / I am busy / I am a mess so I need all the help I can get
I guess there is something good with reading on Switch, I won’t even have to try to get texthookering stuff to work.
Anyway, I did want to comment on the current thought of having discussion bits be separate from how much we read each week. To me that sounds like a complicated mess that will confuse people more than it will make the threads better.
I’m assuming that each day in the VN is not just one continuous scene with no scene changes nor breaks in conversations. I’m also assuming that talking about half a day’s content doesn’t somehow break the experience/story. If both those assumptions are right, I would suggest just finding a break in conversation/scene change that happens between 10k-12.5k, and call the week’s reading there.
Just because there are dates, doesn’t mean we have to use them. They seem too short to be useful/too variable in length.
So just cutting at a good point between 10k-12.5k makes a ton more sense to me. But that is just my two cent. ^^
I guess both systems have their own little issues. I personally don’t mind stopping wherever seems alrightish within a character range and call it a week. It might suck a little if it ends up being in a very interesting scene but I guess it was bound to happen anyways with pure character count. Otherwise we don’t even know if we’ll get very long days, and being able to discuss them in such a case would take multiple weeks. We can aim for max 12.5k characters each week, and when we’re past 10k we save the file and then from there check if there’s a suitable point to stop and save again somewhere in between and share the screenshot. Then just discuss normally in the weekly thread everything that has happened. The only thing I’m thinking of is that 2.5k characters in theory sounds like a lot but they really are not, and the scene or what’s going on can perfectly be the same for even much longer. Let’s hope for the best.
With that and all, personally, I don’t really mind. Thinking about what we can discuss and what we can’t even if we’ve read it does seem a bit complicated to me, but whatever works for the group.
If we prefer simply cutting by character count, I can switch that. Even simpler on my side. I think I’ll go ahead – hard to get really fast consensus gauged but switching this at the beginning would be best if we’re going to do it so we’re not stuck with any awkward gap. Thinking I feel like I should’ve stuck with character count anyway because it’s the very safe, future-proof one. If we ever don’t have the chance to run ahead to gauge the proper contents for the next thread I’m setting myself up to not know what to post with this method.
I finally got back and started my reading for the day. I was just manually looking through the automatically generated options when starting the games every time, but I realized the hook I was using had the same code. What you were actually looking for was HW-8*14:-8*0@F4600:nine_kokoiro.exe which if you look closely at the instructions lines up with the second line of syntax
On a technical level I’m actually pretty curious what’s going on here. I’ve only dabbled in a bit of assembly, but what’s in ECX? What’s the offsets for? Is the @addr referring to program’s virtual memory space in Windows? Is there a relationship between UTF-16, W, and wide characters in Windows?
…ahem, anyway. Thanks to you guys I finally got around to actually setting this up with save hooks and stuff. There’s still some wonkiness I’ve noticed where some text inconsistently gets parsed wrong. Early on I saw 四月。get read as 四月。四月。maybe 30% of the time I reloaded that line. Last week I also noticed I was getting different hooks for different language options. It’s actually fine if I use the hotkeys E/J to switch between single languages, but before I had also tried setting main 日本語 sub English which displays both at once and that ends up in a totally different hook if people want to try that. This is still close enough territory for me, so I’ll just stick to Azusa’s setup.
I looked a little bit more into it the other day and it’s the R codes that Textractor eliminates on restart if I’m not mistaken. The one perfect hook I found is an R code, and I tried to save that but it wouldn’t let me. What I also tried is saving the code in a text file to copy&paste it directly when I open the game + Textractor but that doesn’t work either because the hooks always get different codes apparently, the code that the hook used last time is different, so it just gives back gibberish. So what I’ve ended up doing is saving the screen I mentioned the other day so that when I open the game I quickly launch that, manually search the text (which is already saved in my IME as a quick option, I just have to type そら and press tab), select the hook, and then launch my actual save. It takes like 10 seconds so it doesn’t bother me much, and I prefer to have a perfect hook in exchange ^^ .
I kinda wish Textractor was a tiny bit more maintained and developed, but my technical knowledge of these things is close to nothing to have any worthy opinion and it’s a free tool so I don’t complain at all. If anything I’m very grateful that such a thing exists. It’s just a tiny tiny bit annoying sometimes with some games .
edit: well, apparently perfect hook is not so perfect anymore, sigh. Doesn’t seem to work as well as it did the other day when I go back to the beginning. Back to square one \o/
edit2: nevermind, it does, but I can’t seem to hook it easily each time, it seems a bit random or I’m just not understanding properly how this works…
Planning discussion for week 2: I finished reading 4/19 and started 4/20 today. From the stopping point of week 1’s content through 4/19 is about 9,785 characters. I’d actually recommend reading through the first 1,149 characters of 4/20 as well for a total of about 10,934 for the week.
Recommending stopping point screenshots (SPOILERS)
In terms of story context, the first bit of 4/20 is in Kakeru’s home where he browses the net before going to school, and reads the news about something that he was involved with on 4/19 so it’s fairly related to the prior content if a little less dramatic when read like this. The scene after that starts in the school and is something people aren’t going to want to stop in the middle of (and goes for several thousand characters at the minimum).
Great! I was hoping to get a little ahead in reading starting tomorrow as well (partly cause I know this weekend is busy), but it makes my job super easy that you’ve already figured this out. I appreciate it a lot.
Hey, I’m really sorry to do this – but since the offer has been made in the past, would it be possible for someone else to take over running the club? The last few weeks, the arm problems I’ve complained about in the past have gotten worse than ever. I’ve been throwing so much at it to try to manage it but it seems like nothing makes it better anymore and doing pretty much anything, like using the mouse or keyboard here, flares it worse and worse. Further, issues with an arm (and my dominant one) are disruptive to just about everything, so I’m really not mentally in a great place for trying to learn.
@Mods Could you please make the top post a wiki to facilitate this? Thanks.
If no one else wants to, I don’t mind making the threads for this club too, but I will need help finding the stopping points (with screenshots) since I read on switch and can’t check character counts at all.
Edit: So we might be better off with someone else doing it.
Hey Daisoujou! I am really sorry to hear about the condition of your arm. My father went through something similar in the past year. It did end up clearing but it flares from time to time since we think it’s nerve related. In any case, sending positive vibes your way and I hope that you feel better soon.
Sorry, I just got started on reading this morning and still have a way to go before hitting the mark for the week. However, from peeking ahead a bit it might also be a case of just finishing the chapter while going over the 12.5k target a bit (by ~2k maybe). It’s the end of the ‘prologue’ and starts off with a major event for ~5.9k characters and transitions into a long conversation (probably about it) until the end of the chapter. After that is a short time skip to 4/28.
@Daisoujou Take it easy and rest well. My ex went through hell for carpal tunnel and had some luck using diction/voice recognition software while she was in school. Consider giving that a shot if you still need a pc for irl stuff.
