Yesss join us! I really like Quartet so far actually. Now here’s hoping I can finally make some progress on those writing assignments with this challenge.
I’ve been wanting to do one of these challenges and this is a perfect opportunity!!

1st Day of the Autumn Speak/Write Every Day Challenge!
Thinking in Japanese Podcast
12 September 2024
あなたはなにかを継続することがとくいですか?毎日何かをすることは、あなたにとってとても役に立ちます。
My first attempt at shadowing. Was more difficult than I was expecting. I’m hoping that as I do this daily it’ll get easier. (The topic of the podcast seemed serendipitously apt)
On a whim, I’m going to try this! I’m currently studying for N2, so I’m going to try and write example sentences using the grammar I’m studying for that, along with some regular diary entries to keep things fresh. For speaking I’ll practice narrating my own actions, and try be more talkative with my coworkers. I’ve really struggled with these skills in my studies so I’m excited to refine them!

Happy first day of the challenge, everyone!

Did my 10 minutes shadowing with ふしぎ駄菓子屋. I read a little bit about the method and they want you to speak along with the audio and match the speed, but to start with I just repeated sections after the audio. It’s hard to try and speak at a native speed! My mouth does not want to form the syllables at all.
Also wrote a couple lines for the ‘write every day’ part, not 10 minutes but not going to be too strict at first since I’m already feeling so much resistance to starting this habit and want to make it as easy as possible.

あなたは今やっていることに注目していますか?それとも、ほかのことを考えていますか?
My second go at shadowing - some parts went smoothly, sometimes I failed to accurately remember what had just been said and like @soggyboy said sometimes my mouth just didn’t want to make the shapes!
Read aloud a few stories or sections, and compare with native recordings. I don’t know if there are assorted read-alouds, that are purposefully difficult to pronounce, like having a lot of some consonants or vowels.
Topic title doesn’t have emoji in the front
Yeah, it wasn’t showing up right when I was trying to add it on the work computer so I thought I’d add it later on my laptop…then I forgot.
I don’t know if I want to make it any more difficult I may try comparing with a recording later though.

Did my 10 mins of shadowing/repeating practice on my lunch break instead of forgetting until the end of the day when I was in bed. てもらう is apparently very hard for me to say.
Also wrote another tiny diary entry. Not sure if I’ll post all my diaries to langcorrect or not, because posting them is like a whole other commitment since you have to look over the corrections, and it adds a lot of time. Maybe in November I’ll scale up a bit and post the diaries too.

Shadowing & still stumbling over some word combinations
Reading this the other day, I realised I hadn’t actually read up about “shadowing” so just went and did it how I imagined it should be done. Turns out I wasn’t far off. But I’ve since read around a little & found the following article useful. I especially liked their recommendation to walk around while you’re doing it:
Didn’t do my shadowing/speaking, but I did write a tiny diary entry because I thought it would be a shame to lose my streak so early. My brain managed to dredge up a slightly different grammar point from the これはペンです type stuff it was coming up with before, so I feel like that’s a win.
Well so, I thought I would do this challenge with quick diary entries (like, even just 1 sentence), but I’m in trouble. “Listen every day” is easy enough on my commute, and “read every day” was/is my main goal, so when the heck do I actually have time to journal when I never even do that in English??
So yesterday I chose to do my “read every day” out loud to my parnter while he cooked! I thought that was great! So I gave myself a ☆
And today?
So this is cheesey, but I thought it was like some Youtube content while doing this I let my partner, at long last, teach me how to use the riding lawn mower As I was tromping around on speed, under the cover of the loud mower, I practiced some speach!
“This tractor is green”
“I am a farmer”
“AHHH there are so many stones!”
It was a fun, private way of speaking out loud
Maybe, probably, I said things wrong. But maybe this challenge for me will be more spoken and less written
We shall see!

Sayuri Saying Everyday Podcast
Decided to shadow a different podcast today - maybe because it had a lot of new vocabulary for me ? - it was harder to shadow & the whole exercise took longer than I’d expected. I think I might have to choose something a little easier tomorrow

Wrote my tiny diary again. Tomorrow I’ll make an effort to start the Quartet ch. 1 writing. And do shadowing since I haven’t done it today or yesterday.

I can’t say I’m finding this easy. Wondering if I should repeat the same episode for a few days?
