šŸ‘» Autumn's High Tech Study Log ✨ Learning Japanese at the speed of light with tech 🫨

I really love how much tech there is in learning Japanese.

Ok so let’s say you want to read a manga, but want to process it with Yomitan or something.

So you use Mokuro which reads the images and turns it into a .html file you can open and hover over text to read.

What if you want to send sentences etc to Anki? Take screenshots and send that to Anki?

You can use Mokuro reader with a Mokuro’d manga to do this! (Doesn’t work with Migaku :frowning: )

Ok, but what if the manga you brough digitally is trash? What if you’re like me and using every Tadoku graded readers and the ones released many years ago are just hard to see… It’s not exactly HD? What if the text is so bad it can’t OCR in Mokuro so you can’t hover over it :frowning:

Well, turns out not only is there a neural network designed to upscale images, but you can use this GUI to transform your manga from trash quality to HD by upscaling it!

Here’s a before and after:

before

After

Let’s say you want to zoom in on the text…

Isn’t that just so cool!!!

Last night

Read 11 pages of ć‚¹ćƒ¼ćØéÆ›ć”ć‚ƒć‚“. It’s actually super cute and very funny. Some of the grammar is a bit hard, but it’s like the hard grammar is every 3 or 4 pages for me so I can still read without spending every second studying it.

I am enjoying this! There’s a Youtuber who watched Spiderverse 50 times to learn Spanish:

Similarly repeating things you’ve already seen / read does help a lot with remembering. It’s like its own SRS!

I think I will reread this soon after finishing

Today

Wanikani? Completed it mate.

Anki?

Lads I’m not being funny but you know how I upscaled that Manga? Turns out it’s too upscaled. It’s using 29gb of RAM and I can barely turn the page :joy: What the hell have I done here!!!

This is actually hillarious. It takes around 30 seconds to turn a page. I want to zoom in? 15 seconds.

But hey, the text boxes are so crisp!

Evening

  • Read 11 pages of Crystal Hunters 1
  • Wanikani reviews
  • Watched some Anime (chibi maruko-chan)
  • Studied some grammar from Tae Kim. I love Tae Kim. Man’s got a lot of slang lessons but he’s like ā€œyeah don’t say this unless ur an evil overlord in Animeā€

This is exactly how I feel. I use dark magic AI to increase quality of manga, at the cost of not being able to actually read it :joy:

Wanikani

Did al reviews + lessons

I am expecting to level up anyday now :eyes:

Anki

Small problem: Sometimes I ignore sentences… I gotta train myself to read em in my cards

Like this, my natural instinct would be to not try and read that!

Maybe remove the vocab and just keep the highlighted sentence?

Also, Anki is done

Pitch

The Kotu website is super slow… It takes around 3 seconds to load audio for me… so I’m just going to watch a pitch video

Song I adore

just de-emph everything but the thing you want the eye drawn to. use greys, unbold the text, make it smaller, whatever

Hello wk lovers

Read 4 pages of su-to chan, and 5 of crystal hunters 1.

Came across this:

Is ā€œē§é”ćÆē§ā€ normal? It feels a bit weird to use 私 twice to me (even though its both different vocab).

I can’t tell if this is normal speak or if they are repeating kanji to help you learn. I have read online that their speech is not always the most normal

Sadly no evening reviews today for WK. I went rock climbing and then my friend and I are working on a lil bug bounty. This could be a fun bug we exploit!

I value reading moreso than SRS-time, so hence why I read instead of did WK.

Also studiedsome kubernetes stuff today, I really need to get that cert!

I’d like someway to read and mine from a more portable device… Maybe my laptop or even a tablet… Would be good to take a look. The exact setup I want (Migaku + Mokuro) is a bit weird and idk if any old tablet would like that. My laptop does, but I don’t know if my laptop fits the need of portability (can’t exactly take it to a park lol)

I am thinking a Kindle fire tablet with Mokuro served from local files (no reason I can’t put it into an SD and open the plain old HTML files?) and use Kiwi browser with Migaku? I think…

Two separate clauses. 私達は Us (subject)
ē§ć®ćƒˆćƒ©ć‚ÆćŒ - my truck (object). But yeah I think it sounds a bit weird, feels constructed. Probably in normal usage you would just omit the subject entirely

Edit that said 私 twice in a sentence isn’t that odd by itself. ē§é”ćÆē§ć®ć”ć«č”Œć£ćŸ wouldn’t sound too unusual I think (恔 means house here)

Reviews + lessons done… I am so close to a level up I can smell it!

Anki

I’m sorry but making flashcards out of pokemon concierge is SO cute. Look at them!!!

I can’t omg these are too cute!!

I think removing font randomiser and adding sentences is making it so easy for me to review now,

Should maybe look at doing something different here

Extra info

I might play around with this script to backfill my cards with frequency GitHub - MarvNC/JP-Resources: My contributions to the Japanese learning community.

Still looking at a way to read locally. Seriously tempted to get a Fire tablet, try out what I want to do, and if it doesn’t work return it.

Also might be useful to have pitch graphs and not just colours for words? Or maybe even make a new card type to guess pitched words?? idk

Also maybe increase new cards in anki to 20 / day? But after I sort out frequency and maybe pitch…

Used the Migaku addon to remove pitch accent / furigana from my sentences and target word
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1846879528

Then used advanced copy to make a new field, sentence_clean word_clean
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1898445115

Then got Migaku to add the pitch / furigana back.

Now I have both a clean target word and sentence, which means I can sort by frequency or add pitch accent graphs

Added frequencies to all my cards!

Querying Anki with: 'deck:Default::Mining note:Migaku*'
Query found 1733 notes.
Getting note info...
Parsing frequency lists...
This will change 1712 notes (21 notes had no frequencies found). Type 'yes' to confirm, or anything else to exit.
> yes
Updating notes within Anki...
Done!

 I think I’ll have to run this regularly since Migaku won’t expose frequencies :frowning:

Although I did find this addon that could do it https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1004691625 automatically. Adding the frequency, just not sorting?

I managed to manually sort them too in Anki, so all the cards I’ll do in the future will be in order of frequency

Anyone know of an automated way I could do this?

Using https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/148002038 I automated pitch accent graphs. I already have colours but idk graphs seem cooler and easier to understand for me?

Screenshot 2024-03-21 at 16.04.10

I haven’t exposed them in the card yet… And not sure if I want to expose frequency too? Would it be helpful for me to know how frequent a word is as i’m reviewing it, rather than just knowing that all my reviews are now sorted by frequency?

Finished part 1 of crystal hunters 1. Page 13 to 34.

Read 9 pages of suu and tai-chan.

Put frequency and pitch accent graphs on my cards:

Successful day

Will finish up by doing evening WK reviews

4 days ago my true rentention was around 45% šŸ‘» Autumn's High Tech Study Log ✨ Learning Japanese at the speed of light with tech 🫨 - #69 by autumnalbees

So far it’s gone up to 56% with my changes  (on a day basis)

will continue monitoring

I am so out of it today :joy:

Ok so my plan for the rest of the day is just to read to be honest. Make some cards if there’s vocab I don’t know in a lovely sentence

Suu and Taichan 24 → 45 pages

Looking into playing games too :3

  • Stardew valley - No furigana
  • Pokemon brilliant diamond - No furgana :frowning:

I heard scarlet / violet have furigana though? Reddit - Dive into anything

It is annoying to try and find the kanji withotu furigana. Also textractor on Windows does not sometimes get the kanji right…

They should invent a LearnNatively for games lol

There’s also a script-like thing from the video Game Gengo - Vocabulary Series Database - Google Sheets

I think Animal crossing might be fun?

Mother

Mother inspired a lot of games, especially Undertale. I have always wanted to play. What better than in the original Japanese?

Came across these game scripts Ā‚lĀ‚nĀ‚sĀ‚gĀ‚dĀ‚qĀ‰ĀžĀ‰Ā‡Āƒy[ƒW

Although it rarely uses kanji, being an older game…

Which I like a lot.

Ok game plan, I think…

  • Watch Animal Crossing video to learn some of the basic vocab.
  • Play Mother. Even though it’s hard the gamescript looks so nice and I genuinely want to play this quite badly  I also get to play on my miyoo mini and read the script on my PC

And tomorrow I will play around with Pokemon Scarlet / Violet

EEEKKK I have Mother on my Miyoo!! And a gamescript up!! How exciting!!!

Problem is… the text is so small, and the gamescript doesn’t cover things like attack names etc :joy:

Today

Wanikani

LEVEL UP!!!

Also reviews + lessons, except I had some new reviews in the lesson… Some for later!

Anki

i messed up and had frequency aroudn the wrong way. So I was learning words like ā€œHamasā€ instead of… ā€œWatshiā€ :joy: Fixed!
image

I am thinking to increase number of new vocab cards in Anki? I am getting like 50 cards to review a day, including my 15 new cards (grammar + vocab). And they tend to only take me like 25 - 30 mins now, whereas before I was doing 40…

Rest of the day

  • Played a bit of Pokemon and made an Anki card from it. It’s way above my head… But it’s fun :stuck_out_tongue:
    +1 card :see_no_evil:
  • Read Crystal Hunters pages 34 - 73
I think crystal hunters is good for beginners. I think it’s below my level for sure. Maybe like level 2 wanikani or 8/9 on natively. If they introduce a new words the charecters say it a lot, and it’s in thought bubbles etc so you kinda learn it fast.

I actually hate how the words are so repeated for me, because at my level I know them. So I’m reading ā€œthat’s a girlā€ 1000000 times a page :skull:

I think for someone whose literally on like level 2 of wanikani or maybe even 3 this is a good first manga! Especialyl the free resources. Heck, even do it on level 1 :person_shrugging:

  • 5 vocab, +1 grammar card.
  • Tae Kim grammar book
I have maybe an extra 15, 20 grammar flashcards from reading this
  • Animal Crossing - Played 30 mins. There’s so much text! A lot I don’t know! But I do know some of the text, enough to play
  • Famicom Detective - Finally got this to work  The log is amazing. Great voice acting! I only understand maybe 1 in 10 sentences… So I should probably put this on the backburner? Or just push through it?

Idk maybe I’ll play Animal Crossing some more. It doesn’t have audio or a log so in theory it sucks, but I am familar with the game and it’s much more slice of life  Pokemon suffers from the same. No speaking or a log, but it’s fun and I kinda know the series. Potentially also play??

Also discovered pokeJisho PokƩJisho like Jisho but for Pokemon!

Anyway, a good lil adventure into video games to see if there were any I could play. TL;DR at my level no not really, but it’s not all lost!

  • Shirokuma Cafe ep 12
Finished the day with some Pokemon scarlet. Made some anki cards but I like it, just wish it had voice acting :stuck_out_tongue:

Might try Persona 5 reloaded tomorrow?
