I really love how much tech there is in learning Japanese.
Ok so letās say you want to read a manga, but want to process it with Yomitan or something.
So you use Mokuro which reads the images and turns it into a .html file you can open and hover over text to read.
What if you want to send sentences etc to Anki? Take screenshots and send that to Anki?
You can use Mokuro reader with a Mokuroād manga to do this! (Doesnāt work with Migaku )
Ok, but what if the manga you brough digitally is trash? What if youāre like me and using every Tadoku graded readers and the ones released many years ago are just hard to see⦠Itās not exactly HD? What if the text is so bad it canāt OCR in Mokuro so you canāt hover over it
Well, turns out not only is there a neural network designed to upscale images, but you can use this GUI to transform your manga from trash quality to HD by upscaling it!
Read 11 pages of ć¹ć¼ćØéÆć”ćć. Itās actually super cute and very funny. Some of the grammar is a bit hard, but itās like the hard grammar is every 3 or 4 pages for me so I can still read without spending every second studying it.
I am enjoying this! Thereās a Youtuber who watched Spiderverse 50 times to learn Spanish:
Similarly repeating things youāve already seen / read does help a lot with remembering. Itās like its own SRS!
Lads Iām not being funny but you know how I upscaled that Manga? Turns out itās too upscaled. Itās using 29gb of RAM and I can barely turn the page What the hell have I done here!!!
Studied some grammar from Tae Kim. I love Tae Kim. Manās got a lot of slang lessons but heās like āyeah donāt say this unless ur an evil overlord in Animeā
Read 4 pages of su-to chan, and 5 of crystal hunters 1.
Came across this:
Is āē§éćÆē§ā normal? It feels a bit weird to use ē§ twice to me (even though its both different vocab).
I canāt tell if this is normal speak or if they are repeating kanji to help you learn. I have read online that their speech is not always the most normal
Sadly no evening reviews today for WK. I went rock climbing and then my friend and I are working on a lil bug bounty. This could be a fun bug we exploit!
I value reading moreso than SRS-time, so hence why I read instead of did WK.
Also studiedsome kubernetes stuff today, I really need to get that cert!
Iād like someway to read and mine from a more portable device⦠Maybe my laptop or even a tablet⦠Would be good to take a look. The exact setup I want (Migaku + Mokuro) is a bit weird and idk if any old tablet would like that. My laptop does, but I donāt know if my laptop fits the need of portability (canāt exactly take it to a park lol)
I am thinking a Kindle fire tablet with Mokuro served from local files (no reason I canāt put it into an SD and open the plain old HTML files?) and use Kiwi browser with Migaku? I thinkā¦
Edit that said ē§ twice in a sentence isnāt that odd by itself. ē§éćÆē§ć®ć”ć«č”ć£ć wouldnāt sound too unusual I think (ć” means house here)
Querying Anki with: 'deck:Default::Mining note:Migaku*'
Query found 1733 notes.
Getting note info...
Parsing frequency lists...
This will change 1712 notes (21 notes had no frequencies found). Type 'yes' to confirm, or anything else to exit.
> yes
Updating notes within Anki...
Done!
I think Iāll have to run this regularly since Migaku wonāt expose frequencies
I havenāt exposed them in the card yet⦠And not sure if I want to expose frequency too? Would it be helpful for me to know how frequent a word is as iām reviewing it, rather than just knowing that all my reviews are now sorted by frequency?
Although it rarely uses kanji, being an older gameā¦
Which I like a lot.
Ok game plan, I thinkā¦
Watch Animal Crossing video to learn some of the basic vocab.
Play Mother. Even though itās hard the gamescript looks so nice and I genuinely want to play this quite badly I also get to play on my miyoo mini and read the script on my PC
And tomorrow I will play around with Pokemon Scarlet / Violet
Also reviews + lessons, except I had some new reviews in the lesson⦠Some for later!
Anki
i messed up and had frequency aroudn the wrong way. So I was learning words like āHamasā instead of⦠āWatshiā Fixed!
I am thinking to increase number of new vocab cards in Anki? I am getting like 50 cards to review a day, including my 15 new cards (grammar + vocab). And they tend to only take me like 25 - 30 mins now, whereas before I was doing 40ā¦
Rest of the day
Played a bit of Pokemon and made an Anki card from it. Itās way above my head⦠But itās fun
+1 card
Read Crystal Hunters pages 34 - 73
I think crystal hunters is good for beginners. I think itās below my level for sure. Maybe like level 2 wanikani or 8/9 on natively. If they introduce a new words the charecters say it a lot, and itās in thought bubbles etc so you kinda learn it fast.
I actually hate how the words are so repeated for me, because at my level I know them. So Iām reading āthatās a girlā 1000000 times a page
I think for someone whose literally on like level 2 of wanikani or maybe even 3 this is a good first manga! Especialyl the free resources. Heck, even do it on level 1
5 vocab, +1 grammar card.
Tae Kim grammar book
I have maybe an extra 15, 20 grammar flashcards from reading this
Animal Crossing - Played 30 mins. Thereās so much text! A lot I donāt know! But I do know some of the text, enough to play
Famicom Detective - Finally got this to work The log is amazing. Great voice acting! I only understand maybe 1 in 10 sentences⦠So I should probably put this on the backburner? Or just push through it?
Idk maybe Iāll play Animal Crossing some more. It doesnāt have audio or a log so in theory it sucks, but I am familar with the game and itās much more slice of life Pokemon suffers from the same. No speaking or a log, but itās fun and I kinda know the series. Potentially also play??
