TL;DR I am very nerdy and use a research/experience based approach to learning. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty by writing code to optimise my learning. Follow along to see all the cool things I invent along the way :stuck_out_tongue: who am i hi my name’s autumn! 26f from the UK. Autistic, coder and very very lazy. I am new here, been using Wanikani for 3 days! I have been learning for 63 days so far, so I am still a newbie. I have a 1700 duolingo streak, but I do not care about learning on there… the streak is just symbolic to me at this point as something I do no matter how bad or great my life is. *my motivation" for a long time i have been a big fan of anime, jpop and kpop. I’d like to visit japan one day too and i am having a lot of fun! what i've done learnt hiragana (tofugu guide) katakana (although i still find it hard to read words, i plan to pratice this…) started an anki vocab deck, i really like JLAB as it talks about grammar, uses phrases some animes I have seen / want to watch, and it’s actually quite funny. Pimsleur - it is a bit of a bore but I find it very effective and fun  I also set up my own sentence mining workflow so I can grab words / sentences I see often and put them into anki  my anki workflow for sentence mining yomitan jp-mining-note jpdb freq dict (i love seeing how popular words are that i see) sharex for audio + screenshot i have mpv and mpvacious setup but i mostly use animelon. i dont really use any automation here either… i do use a texthooker but its not like my anki cards automatically create with sentence audio + screenshot, im too lazy to do that anki (fsrs, heatmap) i have around 200 vocab / sentences in my anki deck over the last 2 months, which is pretty great for a newbie! why wanikani? so my sentence mine cards where audio + text → definition. i figured its probably a good idea to also read japanese as well as listen (not my biggest priority, but still one haha). I switched to text only on the front of my cards, and boy. I suck. Like a lot. Cards which were previously very easy I had no idea what they were. Nani!? – What’st that?I said to the kanji on the front of my Nani card :stuck_out_tongue: Soo I thought I’d do some dedicated kanji study using wanikani to supplement this. daily routine anki always - usually around 20 mins. wanikani - only been doing it for 3 days, but every time i learn some new kanji etc i write it out by hand 10 times and if it looks a bit awkward I just make a new mnemonic. For example “twice with only 8 members is yattsu!” (which just sounds like a rude word to me haha) i tend to immerse in the evening with anime, movies, music, youtube videos etc. not always but most evenings. other things i do i have a pimsleur goal each week to reach level, i tend to do it 3/4 days a week. i love it but sometimes i am just not in the right headspace for it haha. i watch some youtube videos about the language  Play hiragana forbidden speech, a video game about learning 250 words, all the hiragana, some grammar and also some cultural things (it’s also genuinely a fun game) my goals n5 by summer CKA by March (a tech cert I am working towards) End of year: visit japan tools I use Sentence Mining https://migaku.com/ for most of my sentence mining For local videos I use MPV and MPVacious GitHub - Ajatt-Tools/mpvacious: Adds mpv keybindings to create Anki cards from movies and TV shows. Anki for flashcards / SRS My note-type is Home - jp-mining-note for local stuff but I use the Migaku note type if mining through Migaku To capture audio / video locally I use ShareX Kanji Kanjigod Wanikani Kanji Koohii to find alternative mnemonics for kanji tools I used Duolingo - Too slow Pimsleur - Like it a lot, but output is a bit awkward for me Japanese like a breeze - best starter Anki deck, I got to around 600 words before starting my own mining deck. I plan to update this weekly hopefully haha

Hi! So I cut my finger really badly last week so hadn’t had much energy to type as it hurt. Its healed now, but still hurts a bit. Toggl [Screenshot 2024-04-29 at 09.56.13] Last week I spent 30 hours studying! Most of that was watching subbed anime, which kinda counts  But also a lot of Anki / reading / gaming! Subbed Anime Ok so I am watching a lot of subbed anime lately. Subbed in English. It’s interesting. I am learning actually, not a lot but I am still learning. I hear them say words and because the word order is different I think “Oh, someones dying?” and ha! The next subtitle sentence is someone is dying :joy: I am also learning new words, like “black” means exploitative company. Interesting! I can’t watch unsubbed anime for multiple hours a day, but subbed is good. And I’d rather watch subbed anime than an English show for learning! Chii’s sweet home The next thing I read after Tai & Suu-chan is Chii’s sweet home by the same author. My digital version is such low quality I can barely read the text, but I got to about 90 pages in. Please follow my natively by the way and let me know to follow you! https://learnnatively.com/user/bee/jpn/ Ok so I really enjoy the story but I can’t get over the text being so blurry :frowning: Tadoku level 2 I read some tadoku level 2 stories but they have way less pictures, more like novels at this point. I just don’t have the attention span so I stopped haha. Yotsuba I started reading Yotsuba and I like it, a lot. It is hard for me to read, the grammar has so much slang I have never read, they speak in a country side accent and Yotsuba is a little demon child and sometimes just says things that no dictionary on this planet can tell me what she means. But! It’s fun. A lot of fun! I love this vieo on Yotsuba! [Yotsuba&: The Greatest Manga of the 21st Century] And there’s so many volumes too. As you go through you pick up on her quirks, their quirks. You get faster at reading. And with so many volumes this will take me far  It was heart breaking in vol1 to see Yotsuba realise she’s moved homes forever, I am sure I will be heart broken many more times! If you’re just starting out with Yotsuba this person reads the manga with you and explains things, I plan to re-read volume 1 when I’m done and watch the videos too  new android tablet setup I brought a Lenovo P11 pro (OLED) to read on and use whole travelling for Japanese learning. [image] I actually brought the gen1, but I brought a refurbished one through Amazon. Surprisingly my tablet is actually gen2, Amazon mislabelled it! So this £400 OLED tablet (256gb / 8gb ram) I actually brought for £200! Happy birthday to me! (It’s my birthday by the way). I’m using Jidoujsho for manga / anime: [image] GitHub - lrorpilla/jidoujisho: A full-featured immersion language learning... A full-featured immersion language learning suite for mobile. - lrorpilla/jidoujisho Mostly manga  I hooked it up to Anki and now my cards look like this: [Screenshot 2024-04-29 at 10.08.35] Reading is so much fun, especially with the OLED making it look pretty! I can lay in bed, sit on a bus, on a train etc and just read manga in Japanese and mine at the same time. I can also mine anime easily. I still prefer to do this on desktop, but its there for when I travel for work / fun  hypertss with windows https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/111623432 I managed to figure out how to use HyperTTS to add audio to some of my cards which were missing it. I use the Windows audio transcription on my Windows machine which makes it free to use, it’s ok audio. tbh I just have it so my card feels “complete”, I don’t actually need it :woman_shrugging: migaku course! Big news! Migaku have released their new course. This will teach you the first 2000 words you know as well as the grammar. I have been doing it, and I must say I am a fan! They teach you grammar lessons, and then they SRS the grammar point BUT they also teach you new vocab with the grammar. So say you learn to make an i adjective negative, they teach you this one specific grammar point and then they introduce new adjectives but in the sentence they are negative. Each sentence on each card is I+1. So every word in there you already know from previous cards, this reinforces them so much if you read them! They also do some cool things, like all names automatically have furigana so you don’t memorise names. If the word you’re learning is in a sentence but the sentence uses Kanji you forgot, you can click on it to get the furigana to help you understand the sentence to understand the word you’re learning. Ok let me break it down for ya! [IMG_6204] Here’s a flashcard. Word on the front with a sentence. [IMG_6205.PNG] Here’s the back of the card with sentence + word audio! Let’s say I’m reading the sentence, but I don’t know a word. I can click it to look it up / show furigana  [IMG_6206] Its up to you whether you pass or fail a card based on this. Some cards also have notes, for example this note on the word for friend (along with the kanji breakdown) [IMG_6207.PNG] I wanted to see what the 2nd word for friend was, so I clicked it and surprise! I can look it up! [IMG_6208.PNG] If you are learning Japanese and want a beginners vocab deck, the Migaku one is the absolute best one out there right now. It costs money, but it is the best. Migaku changes Ok so a while ago I complained (A LOT) about how pictures / media worked in Migaku. You needed to save it to a file, click "upload’ use Finder to find the file and then upload it. I just wanted to copy / paste. When I screenshot or screen audio record it goes into my clipboard, and its so much faster to paste instead of save to a file etc… Well they took my feedback and added this as a feature! Now I can use ShareX to record the audio to my clipboard and paste it to get it into Migaku’s card editor. This saves me SO much time for video games / manga!! Migaku clipboard Speaking of video games, for some games like Danganronpa I use an online text pasting service. So the way you play visual novels is: Play visual novel Texthooker extracts the text from the game Texthooker puts it into clipboard You use a browser extension to auto paste You auto paste into a website like Clipboard Insertion Page - Anacreon Edition This makes it HTML so you can use Migaku, Yomitan etc. Migaku have released their own texthooker page, so now my process is: Play visual novel Texthooker extracts the text from the game Texthooker puts it into clipboard Auto-pasted into Migaku clipboard page (I assume their extension does the auto paste part) This makes it HTML so you can use Migaku, Yomitan etc. Another small quality of life feature that makes it faster and easier for me to play video games! vidya games (stardew :eyes:, danganronpa, famicom detective) I have been playing games a lot! I really want to play Danganronpa, but the text is a bit too hard for me right now :frowning: Stardew is fantastic. I am just living my life, there’s no furigana but I see the kanji so many times I kinda just memorise them. Also its basically a “slice of life” video game. You just exist, farm, fight some things, build relationships. Highly suggest for people who have played previously and want to play again! anki everyday ofc I did anki everyday even with cut up fingers :joy: [Screenshot 2024-04-29 at 10.42.33] The grind NEVER stops! [Screenshot 2024-04-29 at 10.42.47] Almost 600 word I know  WK havent done much because it requires typing and my finger HURTTT to type. I am not a super big fan of WK, but I have always said It will be a good start for me  new kaishi! with pics! Ok so speaking of beginner decks, there’s a new Kaishi update with pictures now! [image] Releases · donkuri/Kaishi Kaishi 1.5k is a modern, modular Japanese Anki deck made for beginners who want to learn basic vocabulary. - donkuri/Kaishi I think Kaishi is the ultimate free beginner japanese deck. I actually picked it up as its similar to Tango N5, which I was doing to make sure I pass N5! Their cards are also I+1 and while they do gradually expose more grammar structures, they do not explicitly teach it. You’ll need to pair this with Tae Kim’s guide to grammar! Secret project Still work being done on this. If you are reading this you will get to flex you knew about this before everyone else  I have been told it is being released in 2 weeks. Will keep you up to date  KatakanaKore1k Over in my Discord (http://discord.skerritt.blog) I released KatakanaKore1k Discord - A New Way to Chat with Friends & Communities Discord is the easiest way to communicate over voice, video, and text. Chat, hang out, and stay close with your friends and communities. I SUCK at Katakana, so I made a deck of the top 1000 Katakana words to help me learn how to read it. after maybe 100 words I felt strong enough and merged the deck with the rest of my mined cards  Frequency overload Ok so I mine the same words over and over again. And because I sort Anki by frequency, that means if I learn “kawaii” I will have 3 - 4 cards with the same word to teach me it. I noticed as time goes on some cards vibe with me better than others. Some cards are just hard. Their sentences are hard, it just doesn’t stick in my brain. So by having multiple cards of the same word I eventually filter out the bad ones and stick with the good ones that help me learn. It’s weird, but it’s nice to see  Japanese in the wild Ok finally, I was watching some Japanese ASMR the other day and I came across this youtube comment: [image] I tried to read it and welll… I could!! My first time ever coming across Japanese outside of my learning time that I can read, in the wild! They are saying they like painful massages, I was so excited I took a screenshot of it!
