I’m traveling at the moment, but I fly back to Japan on Friday, so I’ll probably read Friday or Saturday, depending on wifi access.
Like @HopeWaterfall, I’m thinking I might end up reading in Korean for this one! (I’m in South Korea, so it feels appropriate.) I’m about 20% into 뜻밖의 계절, so hopefully I can make progress or finish it off during the readathon. The book club for it just finished so I feel that I should try and finish it relatively close to everyone else, haha.
I really like this idea; I’ve been considering just catching up with the recent releases in the series I’m reading, but I have a couple of series that’d be really nice to finally knock out…
I’d like to participate! I’m busy Friday and Saturday, but Sunday/Monday should be open in my schedule. Books I’m considering reading (not all of them, haha):
Hi everyone! I‘m looking forward to joining the readathon again. It just so happens that I’ll be on a six-hour train ride on the 20th, so I‘m picking that as my readathon day.
I really want to read a physical book for at least some of the time, so my plan is:
read at least 10 pages of Summer Wars
read for at least one hour in total
I haven’t read anything in Japanese since probably the JLPT last December so I’m setting my goals very low.
I’d probaly start on either the friday or saturday, In terms of goals I’d like to read my first book in japanese as I have finished learning the basic grammer and also may attempt the read the first page 夢色 as this is one of my faverite shows I and I got the first manga tho not sure how far i’ll get in that.
Vague goals - read for 3 hours (I hope much more), finish off one short story, maybe read another. Complete manga clubs and advanced dictionary for the week.
Got off to a bit of a late start today, but I have the day off work, and I’m settled in and ready to start reading! Guess I am starting this Readathon off after all! My hours are going to be 2025-03-19T17:00:00Z→2025-03-20T16:59:00Z
In the winter readathon, I managed 413 pages over 10 hours of reading (still marveling over the fact that I’m even able to read in Japanese at all, much less that I can do it for that long in one day!) This time, I’m guessing I won’t end up doing quite as much in terms of time or pages, since I intend to start my first LN this time, rather than sticking only with manga.
I’ve decided to start with 小学館ジュニア文庫 名探偵コナン 黒鉄の魚影. 130 pages on the Bookwalker app, so relatively short, but all text, no pictures! This is also one of the only コナン movies I still haven’t had a chance to watch yet, so I won’t have prior memories of the material to fall back on.
One hour in and I’ve only gotten through the few pages that cover the beginning chase/action scene… I had to look up a fair amount of words, and re-read sentences multiple times in order to parse them properly. I’m enjoying it so far, though, and I am feeling like I really can picture the scene, so yay!
Pausing for lunch, and hopefully when I get back to reading I’ll be able to pick up the pace a bit more…
I saw one of the Naruto discussion boards pop up here the other day, and it reminded me that I would like to read the series (I’ve watched the whole anime several times), so I added the first volume to my latest Bookwalker purchase.
I would like to read at least three new graded readers I haven’t read yet. Hopefully, my eyews will cooperate. That’s a big IF, though, but I’ll see what happens. I really miss my reading!
Ahead of time I was not really sure what I want to read, and I changed plans a few times, but I think this is how it should go:
I want to finish 献灯使 | L39 . I already read the main story, but there are five four (+ atogaki) short stories left, in total ~100 pages.
I have neglected most of my book clubs, but I think I can manage to finish the 風立ちぬ・美しい村 | L30?? in time. I currently have slightly over 40 pages left, and the book club ends on Friday. As I might need a few breaks in my #1 book because find it sometimes hard to read several short stories immediately one after another, I think I will jump back and forth between those two.
Just in case I need more material: I recently started アンソーシャル ディスタンス (新潮文庫 か 54-5) | L32 and it is sooo good! It’s a collection of short stories just like #1 so this should fit well with the jumping around.
If I still need more stuff to jump around between, I recently dug up 1Q84 BOOK1〈4月‐6月〉後編 | L34 again which I had started two years ago but never finished . The chapters are short and switch the POV each time anyway, so this perfectly fits the jumping around theme
Finished the first chapter! That puts me at about 12% of the way through the LN. This is definitely a much slower pace than I’ve been reading manga (It just took me 1hr 45min to read 15 pages, the first 7 of which were images from the movie with captions!), but I’m still enjoying myself. Going to take a break for a walk, since it’s beautiful spring weather where I am today. And when I get back, I’m going to switch over to manga for a bit - probably chapter 1 of Naruto V1, given the nudges I’ve been getting about that!
That’s amazing!! That’s awesome that you started your first light novel
I have a feeling others have maybe had the same experience, but my first novel took forreeever to read lol (I still haven’t even read a ton of novels, and am still a bit slow but shhh) And it was 星の王子さま, very short and should have been simple, but it still took me soo much longer than manga. So I feel like you’re not alone, it will get easier!!!
I have macular degeneration, so even reading English is difficult, especially small print. But I want to get back to reading, because I had gotten to about a 3rd grade reading level in Japanese and don’t want to lose it. It will be tough reading, but I will do my best. Thanks for the encouragement!
how about …
goal = 1 graded reader for the readthon
given 2 days - 2 graded readers done!!! and doubled the goal
if really feeling up to it… 3rd is a bonus (especially if it’s a naruto graded reader)
while arguably they could count for readathon…audio books probably don’t exist for graded readers
this reminds me I really need to see the eye dr and update the prescription (need new progressives)
the lighted mag glass is a life saver but prescription readers beat the cheap ones from the drugstore.
been too lazy to schedule it (i’d go this friday but someone is forcing me to read )
have been going more and more to reading on the computer with ttsu and mokuro
changing the font/zoom for books is so much nicer and the yomitan - takes those walls down
