I think my graded readers’ CDs have the story pages that show on my computer. I will check that out, and if so, I will turn off the audio and read the book that way. That will mean I can enlarge the pages, and not have any trouble seeing the book!!! YAY!!!
School stuff came up tomorrow which should take about four hours, I’d considered pushing my reading back to Friday, but I decided to stick with Thursday, because during the other two readathons I participated in I was able to dedicate the whole day to reading, and I want to see what my stats will look like when I have other responsibilities ![]()
Except my computer DOESN’T have a disc player in it! What kind of computer is this anyway?
I’ll just have to read the old fashioned way with a magnifier. I will do it!
had this experience recently - wanted to rip some CDs had purchased and went ooohhhhhh no drive…
too many people were using them as cup holders so they got rid of them (mayhaps)
read it on the internet so it must be true
might check the publishers website, might have the data online (possibly)
if you do ever need a drive - you can buy a usb cd/dvd drive (that’s what I had to do)
used it for a few cds and and now it sits back in it’s box ![]()
Read the first (long!) chapter of Naruto V1. It’s been a few years now since I last watched episode one of the anime - so nostalgic!
![]()
Other than the first page, with it’s hard to read font and archaic language, which took me a full 10 minutes to get through, that was so much easier and faster to get through than the LN! One hour to get through 59 pages, as opposed to one hour to get through about 4… ![]()
Taking a break for dinner and a few chores now, but hopefully will be back to read chapter 2 of the LN later!
I bought a portable disc player a few years back, specifically so I could continue watching dvds on my computer. Actually, two of them - one for US dvds, and one that plays region 2 (ie, Japan, among other places) dvds. A bit expensive, since each one was around $90 USD or so, but it lets me continue to play discs on my computer, which was very important for me! I haven’t tried non-dvd discs in either, but I would imagine they would work also… All I have to do is plug them in to my computer via the USB drive, so it’s nice and easy.
I need to find something. I may have to drive to the city tomorrow and see what I can find. There is a good electronics store there.
First update

Decided to start with trying to get the jojo book club comprehension questions back on track. Since I’m manually filling out the vocab and checking for version differences, it takes longer than I would like. I got so behind with moving and everything though, I’m going to prioritize this. I’m still about 4 chapters behind…
Ooooh it’s started!!! Loving people’s updates so far.
My 24 hours is going to start when I get to the airport and can start reading while waiting for flight #1. That’ll be in about 3 hours I think. I’ll update once before I get on the plane, and then I might update about 5 or 6 hours later when I’m in layover territory.
(My layover is like 7 hours lol so that’s going to be where a whole bunch of my reading gets done)
There won’t be many updates tho until I’m finished, and I won’t be able to do nice formatting on my phone, but still, EXCITING!! ![]()
My plans have changed a whole bunch over the last week but here’s what I’ll probably do:
| Book name | Start page | Finish page | Time spent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manga | |||
| ホリミヤ13 | 32 | 194 - finished! | 1hr 2 mins |
| Spy x Family 1 | 0 | 42 | 28 mins |
| Novels | |||
| Games | |||
| Pokemon Violet | n/a | n/a | 2hrs 25 mins |
| Totals | Manga pages | Novel pages | Time spent |
| 204 | 206 | 10hrs 53 mins |
Another hour, another chapter (7 more pages) of my LN read. I’ve definitely enjoyed the day, but my brain is fried!
I’m gonna stop for the night, I think. I’ll have time to do some more reading tomorrow morning before my 24 hours is up, though I’ll probably switch back to manga.
To everyone who’s starting their reading hours tonight - have fun!

First little update, finished chapter 1 of 秒速5 in the airport
PG. 38 - PG.57, 19 pages total
Ive realized a devastating flaw in my plan, which is that tracking time is very difficult when I’m going to be moving around a lot. I probably spent 30 minutes reading this first bit. I think I might not end up tracking time spent.
This book is really really really really good. I think I’m going to stick with it on the flight for a while and get through quite a bit before I land.
See you in like 6 hours maybe!
Safe travels!! And the rule is always that imprecise metrics are great as long as you’re reading, so estimate however works best ![]()
Oooh that’s good to hear! I plan to read it too, at some point.
Have you watched the anime? I think it’s (slightly) better than 君の名は。- feels more like Shinkai doing it for himself, rather than caving to what pleases the crowds.
There’s another book too, telling the story “from the perspective of another character” - 秒速5センチメートル one more side. Should make for a good read after this one ![]()
Or reading them in parallel, although in your case it’s a bit late for that I guess ![]()
Safe travels!
Update
@Malinkal I love your table so I’m copying it!

Boarded my train an hour ago, started reading Summer Wars about 20 minutes ago. I have, so far, read a grand total of two (2) pages. I knew I was rusty, but damn. Physical books are a bit of a different beast.
In other words, I have already completed 20% of one of my goals and 33% of the other, so I’d say it’s a successful start ![]()
So far, it’s been very descriptive and poetic, which is fun to read when you know a language well, but really hard when you don’t.

2nd update
Read a few pages of my current ebook read.
It felt much smoother and I read more than twice the amount in the same time. Wow.
I definitely don’t have the stamina some others on here do, so I’m taking a break now.

3rd update
20-minute chunks seem to be the thing today. Read another two pages of Summer Wars, was just slightly faster than for the first two pages. Six pages left until I reach my goal, I’m not sure I’ll make it lol.
But! I’ve reached my second goal with this ![]()

4th update
The prologue has ended and I feel like my pace is picking up a little. Still a lot of descriptive language. I miss my audiobooks. Back when I used to listen to the corresponding audio books while reading, it was much easier
Alas, my audible subscription has expired and I’ll have to look readings up myself now.
On page 13 now, so only four pages left!
Second update

broke for a shower and chores, then for laundry and lunch
There was a diagram page with over 20 new words that will probably never appear again and that ate sooooo much time. This is painfully slow reading for me.
Touched down at airport number 2 and I’m delighted to see that Wanikani does indeed make it past the great firewall, so I can update while here…
I finished chapter 2 of 秒速5!
Second chapter is so good. The 片想い is done really well. I love when books swap perspectives between characters between chapters. @cezarL I’ll definitely have to try the other book with the perspectives swapped, which I didn’t realise existed! Thanks for telling me about it.
I haven’t seen the film yet, despite how good I’ve heard it is (mostly from @Lisaveeta ). This book is so good that I’ll have to go watch it very soon though.
新海誠’s prose is so readable. It’s pretty simple, there’s no hard metaphors to grasp or anything for the most part, especially in this book so far. This one’s a bit easier than 君の名は。. It’s just good. It’s all so visual, that I can picture every scene really really clearly. Both chapter 1 and chapter 2 so far have exceeded expectations. I’m not sure which is better! Here’s hoping chapter 3 is as good. Before that, though, it’s time to switch to something else. I have done like 80 pages of this book in a row, after all.
Time to switch to すべてがFになる!
Current stats: 2hrs 44mins, 85 novel pages. More accurate summary is in my first post from today. I’ve already beaten last readathon in novel pages quite easily and I’ve still got a long way left to go!
I’ll update again in a few hours or when I hit another milestone!
I’m starting off the day with one of the Sakura Japanese Graded Readers, that I had already begun the other day. Page numbers are very approximate, but this is what my e-eader is telling me, so I’ll just go with that. It feels nice to finish something that’s not a picture book/Tadoku for once, even if it’s still a graded reader, this one is a simplified version of an actual short story (it even has a wikipedia page).
| Book name | Start page | Current page | Time spent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 蜘蛛の糸 | 12 | 35 / finished | 44 mins |
Ohh, it’s really interesting seeing how people are sharing their reading and also with different updates/time stamps, I’m definitely grabbing a few of those ideas for my post tomorrow! I’m looking forward to beginning.
It’s so much fun reading everyone’s updates! Good luck to everyone reading today; I’ll be joining you all tomorrow!
Although it is already 2pm here, I only managed to read 2 hours so far, in which I read the first of the four remaining short stories in 献灯使 | L39 (19 pages). On to the next short story!
