p94 last sentence.
これもこれで わるくない やと 、慶司は思うのだった。

Is this これもこれで an idiom of some sort? If so, what does it mean?

Also what is やと? Is it や+と with と being a quote marker that goes with 思う? If so, what is the や doing there?

I have nothing useful to say except that I also wondered this, so I hope somebody is able to shine some light on it!

Jisho knows それはそれで as „in that case; (might not be what was expected or hoped for but) if that’s the case“
So he thinks something like „that in itself isn’t too bad either“

For the やと: probably some dialect of だと

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks

I think これもこれで can be read quite literally “(this being) as it is” which is more or less what you said.

For やと, it comes after ない so I don’t think it’s だ. Plus if it was some form of Western や copula the character would have used it before I think. So I don’t know but I’d say it’s just emphatic like ぞ or something. :woman_shrugging:

You’re probably right, I didn’t think too much about it

Oops, late correction here. ~じゃう is used in place of ~ しまう (not ~ しまう) and ~ちゃう is used in place of ~ しまう. Sorry for the confusion.

I definitely agree–this one when in a completely different direction than I was expecting. I was thinking the dad would learn a lesson and be more involved in his kids lives, or something. Instead the siblings grow closer as a family and have fun together and the dad, who didn’t keep his commitments to his kid, is never mentioned again.

And don’t read the Cautions! It’d be interesting to see one where they read it beforehand and either follow instructions exactly or disregard it on purpose.
