This word is often derided on Wanikani as something that is never used. The whole “What is the point of Wanikani teaching words that are not common?” argument aside, here are some places where 里心 is used. (You have to use the search function to find it since it’s only one or two instances in the whole page).
I dunno why I wanted to post all this… just thought people gave 里心 a bad rap. I’m not saying that its a common word at all (using the NINJAL only brought up the sites above. There are a few more but the links are bad)
Besides, at least you know that it’s not read like りしん, but さとごころ
Thanks for compiling this, though I feel like the anti-里心 crowd still seems to base their position on the idea that since it’s not a common word in spoken language that they’ve been misled or something. “Homesick” is common in English and 里心 means “homesick” so they will try to use it when they want to talk about homesickness with natives.
I remember in the old thread someone saying how so and so word isn’t used in real life, then later that week I was playing an rpg in japanese and it was used. I realize in regards to language game definitely does not equal real life, but at least it can give people who play games like me a reason to care about those words.
If only people put in effort like this to learn how the words taught on WK are used in Japanese (i.e., literary, casual conversation, etc.), I don’t think “why are we learning ‘useless’ words on WK” threads would even be authored. Alas, at the very least we can bookmark this thread and bring it up the next time such a thread get made (because this won’t be the last time we’ll hear ‘里心’ complaint).
