Welcome to the open beta of the Speed Run Book Club!

Based on a crazy idea thought up in the IBC thread, we will aim to read some of the 3 currently available free to read volumes before the time limit is over on October 13, 2025.

The free to read volume 3 can be found at Bookwalker or Amazon.

:police_car_light: This manga takes place in Gifu, and quite a few of the characters will be speaking non-standard Japanese.

EN Summary

From unwanted advances from her boss to work dumped onto her by coworkers, thirty-year-old Tomoko Hanno, or Panko for short, struggles to stand up for herself. But when her rusty bike breaks down, she meets Ryouhei Takahashi from the neighborhood bike repair shop. Although he can be a bit overbearing, Panko finds herself relying on his considerate nature and her world begins to shift…

But it seems like 遼平くん is protective of everyone, so it wasn’t just ともちゃん ^^

Yes yes, 遼平くん is definitely good at communication, 100% xddd
Also, yes yes, of course 安定や落ち着かせること、馴染むこと are characteristics of ともちゃん xddd
I love how their relationship is fated and meant to happen, 宿命的な関係, citation needed though xdd

I liked the speedrun aspect of this book club, thank you for organizing the book club @shitsurei! Definitely interested for any future speedrun book clubs though ^^

As for the third volume, I don’t think it captured the magic of volume 1 again, though あとがき was really fun this time around ^^

I think I’d give volume 1 something like 4 stars and 3 stars after that, and if I’m going to continue, it’s probably not going to be anytime soon for now ^^

I’ll try to read at least a bit of Fata Morgana today, looking forwards to people getting here so that we can trade some gossip about the biker guy C:

Well that was fast! I’m about to start volume 3, might have already bought the rest of the volumes though :innocent: it’s a nice and light read, I think I want to finish it!

I’m hearing spin-off club :sweat_smile:

I’m planning on probably buying the rest (or at least the ones on sale), but I told myself I need to finish the free ones first before I can buy more.

Finished the first three chapters of volume 3 :slight_smile:

Ch15

It was! Made following the story line so much easier! ^^

Ch16

We got the origin story of the surprise breadsticks. But we totally missed the chance for surprise “american dog” ^^

If you’re doing a spin-off anytime soon, I’m probably not joining right now. Inbetween my lack of kanji knowledge and my budget planning, it’s just not the right time now ^^ The story seems to be a bit less wholesome than anticipated, maybe I’m too much used to slice of life high school romances :sweat_smile: Still cute though, so I’ll probably finish it at a later time with or without bookclub :slight_smile:

I think she already said that she just wasn’t cut out to take care of a kid and didn’t want to cut back on her own dreams in the last volume. I don’t expect there to be any deeper reason behind it.
I can, however, really understand 高橋くん. That she didn’t even drop by once is silly -.-.

Interesting that the guys said シャツ to his hoodie. Didn’t know that word can be used for them. Funny that ウルトラマン is apparently okay to mention after the last volume had all known works censored.

Finally, the breadsticks made a comeback, still giggle worthy everytime :smiley:

I’m quite surprised she quit her job (but obviously a good choice :sweat_smile:) Thought the office colleague and terrible boss would play a bigger role overall. They might still come back one way or the other of course.

This manga also features one of my worst anime/manga betrayels: A hair cut for one of the main characters :sob: I know it’s supposed to show character development, but please I hate ot so much when it happens.

Yeah, this was the most fun I ever had in a book club :slight_smile: I just never have the stamina to read just a few pages/chapters a week and having to wait until the next week to read more, always makes me completely lose interest in the story. Using free to read books and binge as many as you can until the deadline is a really fun concept :smiley: But it will probably hard to organize? I sometimes browse through the free to read section, but I could never recommend one to read, since I don’t know the, yet :sweat_smile:

This one I kinda got to cheat since I had just watched the drama and it was at the top of my wishlist and saw it go into free to read very quickly. Honestly, if any of my to reads to on free to read I might suggest another one of these. I’m still a little behind (I’m in the middle of the third book), but read them way faster than I would have on my own (where I probably wouldn’t have finished even the first one by the time we got to the end of the time period). So I’m glad everyone enjoyed the club! It’s such a spontaneous thing that I don’t know how it fits into the rest of the book clubs, but look for another speed run from me in the future™.

So I read the rest of the chapters. Overall nice. But I don’t think I want to continue after the freebies.
The dialect is a turn-off since it makes the story harder to follow/lookups more complicated (+ the kid o_O). The story is nice, but not a “I can’t miss it”. Overall, I realize more and more that I prefer long form sentences in books over Manga conversation most of the days.

She looked better with long hair.

I think what I liked most about the Manga is the development of パン子.

Even though it wasn’t as much of a constant emotional high, I liked this volume a lot, perhaps more than the other two - bc it was nice to see them navigating some challenges and issues. 遼平 makes me uncomfortable sometimes, but he’s really great at other times

I also enjoyed the speed run thing. If there’s a vol 4 thread I’ll probably read along. Otherwise I’ll probably pause a bit, since it’s not Kansai-ben, and I have a lot of other things to finish.

I was also pleasantly surprised by this

I think it was very nice in context, also it wasn’t really showing character development here, imo… Which is part of why I liked it… Like it wasn’t something she decided as like some symbolic decision. It’s simply something another character did, to help her cope or w/e

Also can someone tell me what all this bread sticks discussion is about? I seem to have totally missed this.

One of my favorite parts was the Kimi-chan x Ryouhei-kun exchange. I’m glad she was able to give him some context, and tell him that he shouldn’t be blaming/attacking the MC for this. She’s such a an enjoyable character, for how she’s able to give the sort of blunt feedback and advice she gives. Also her “thank you for hitting him” at the end was great

Also I love Ryouhei’s friend group - they’re all so great

Anyway very enjoyable series. Thx @shitsurei for starting this up

I don’t plan to continue or buy, because I don’t like relationship development. Maybe not that bad, but I am a little worried about the future.

Maybe the dialect might make me miss some vocab, but not that much. I can get by the grammar somehow. Not the really the point I am worrying about the series.

Thanks @shitsurei for managing the Speedrun Book Club (SBC? SRC?) I hope to see more of several genres in the future. Ones that I might not read by myself as well. (Having judged books by the cover… but manga is really easy for me to speedrun :grinning_face:)

I really like one, particularly, the resign decision, and perhaps also relationship with 後輩.

Though it makes the future decision on cliffhanger. Not bad for making it enticing. I am also curious and hopeful.

I have continued the series by the way, volume 8 now. I still find it very nice, the only thing that I don’t like, I don’t think it’s a real spoiler as it happens pretty much all the time in this manga, is that people just conveniently seem to run into each other all the time…

Isn’t it really bread sticks, of チョコチップ variety? (Though the last one is はしまき.)

At least, relatively small long pieces of pastry…

It says チョコチップスナック in Vol.1 Pg.4 :thinking:. More like small bread?
