Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. Opinions on the new characters we met this week?

  5. Theories about what that thing on top of the tower is?

  6. Thoughts now that we’ve confirmed what happened to Estelle’s mother?

I feel like I’m gonna trip over myself trying to say 高所恐怖症

Spoilers

Nice to get a little dungeon dive! Sometimes I don’t like that RPGs with enemies on the field make them really easily ignorable, but with this conga line of people and the narrow corridors, no worries on that front, heh. A few times I was careless with attrition and health got a little low, but it all worked out fine. These groups feel great to hit with Estelle’s spin move or Joshua’s charge. I found the level 20 chest but :skull: . Since there’s a chest they want you to come back for and what must be a giant plot machine on top of the tower, I assume we’ll be back, heh. It reminded me of things we’ve come across (the heal stations IIRC? it’s been a bit), just bigger and with what looked like a place for inserting something. With 4 towers around we definitely have a videogamey pattern unfolding.

This game is pretty consistently charming. I thought the camerawoman was funny (とてもキュート!) and even though it didn’t matter much, it’s cool that she helps blind enemies in combat.

The game really wants us to remember that Joshua has more on his mind that isn’t being stated upfront. Does he know something about the tower? His mood changed upon getting up there, though he’d presumably know about whatever from the moment we were heading there, and didn’t react til he arrived. If there was something said or some other subtle trigger, I missed it.

I have a bad habit in Japanese of really not committing place names to memory well (I mean, I’m still working on remembering the real words sooo), and I feel like that’s going to cause me problems if I don’t start focusing more on it or making little notes of places, because political entities or locations are coming up way more now. Hopefully having you all on board will help me track who’s who as well

Slowly getting through this week.

A note on the names of mysterious things

That 《セプト=テリオン》is localised as “Sept-Terrions.” Sept as in 7 and Terrion from Terra (= Earth).

It is hard to see in my image, but《輝く環》has furigana オーリオール, or “Aureole” which is French for halo.

Just in case anyone was curious.

I’m French and I didn’t get that. I think I parsed it as “Holy Hole” which, uh, well. I guess aureola does make more sense given the Japanese 輝く環…

It’s not the first time I have issue with French in Japanese games, I think Japanese authors like to use French words sometimes to sound “fancy” but they clearly often don’t know the proper pronunciation and their transcriptions are all over the place. Like this リ seems influenced by English “aureola” (/ɑˈɹiː.ə.lə/) but in French it’s “auréole” (/o.ʁe.ɔl/) so I really think it should be something like オレオル (not sure about the long オーs, but certainly レ and not リ).

EDIT: I just realized that ironically オール couldn’t be hole since obviously it’s ホール but that’s actually me being French and not understanding how "H"s work.

Any French I learnt in high school has long since been lost to me, so sorry for any inaccuracies. I didn’t know this connection until the same loanword showed up in Frieren.

Oh it’s not just made up for Trails? I couldn’t find an entry for it in my Yomichan.

They use different kanji underneath the furigana, but it’s the same almost the same word. Looking closer that’s オレオール there, my bad. Thought since we’ve got 輝く環 I’m still relatively confident that’s what was meant.

Tiniest Frieren spoilers

Yeah オレオール does seem like a more reasonable transcription of the French pronunciation.
