We are starting so soon
I’m both scared and excited for this one because this is another genre I would read on my own for non-learning purposes but also…fantasy sounds like it’s going to be hard.

I’m currently reading ahead for a bit because my availability is unclear in the near future, and I must say I find it easier than 氷菓, for what it’s worth They use a few fantasy words here and there, but nothing that I found really distracting. Also, they quote some of the fantasy words in <…> brackets which is really helpful to tell them apart from the normal text. But there’s nothing like 氷菓 's disconcerting crazy Kanji-string “Look at me, I know cool stuff” teenager-attitude words, if you know what I mean
(dunno whether you’re reading 氷菓 as well, but if you are, maybe that puts it into perspective… I’m in week 5 for both books btw.)
Also, it’s a real page-turner for me, thanks so much to @seanblue for picking the book and setting up this reading group!
I’ve only read one week of 氷菓 so far but if that’s representative at all then I’m a bit reassured (and surprised, but I do remember one 業務上過失致死 )
The hype is real
Due to life being busy since the beginning of 2020, I haven’t been able to work as much as I wanted on the book’s vocab. Yet, I did quiet a lot in december and am still motivated to try and see.
Maybe I just won’t be able to follow the pace, I guess the future will tell us what happens.
Just do the best you can and ask questions if you need to! Maybe it’ll be easier than you think!
I have the same concerns, so don’t feel like you are alone. It may be that not everyone reads a chapter a week.
I think I might join this club. I tried to join another one here on the wk community a long time ago, but I didn’t keep up with it cuz I’m lazy lol. But lurking in the jlpt 2019 thread and seeing all the passes motivated me to shoot for the N2 this year, so I really need to read more, and this book seems like it could be interesting.
I’m pretty rusty so I’m not sure I can actually keep up, but I bought it on my kindle and I’m gonna try to stick to the 1-chapter-a-week pace. I really wanna stick with it because I’m pretty disappointed in how inconsistent I am with books, so hopefully I can actually keep up with it this time.
I started reading the first chapter and there are several unknown words. Do you think these are useful words to know? I’m debating about srs them👀
Depends on what words we‘re talking about ^^
Some are made up by the author (like 闘蛇衆 or 岩房), but there are also loads of common words that are worth SRSing, I would say. Do you have some examples?
It’s been a while since I’ve made a book club thread. Have there been an format changes in recent book clubs that people like? It seems mostly the same.
The only thing I can think of is the addition of the option “finished this part” in the weekly poll. I don’t really use it, though, so I’m neutral about it.
That’s the only change I could think of, but I actually don’t like it since most people don’t go back to update it after they’ve finished.
薄板葺き、土間、麝香、水流, other words describing the village…are these common words?
I’ve personally always thought of it more as an option for people who have read ahead before the week started
Maybe I could include that as an option but reword it to make that clearer.
Wait are we supposed to go back and update it when we finish?
I don’t know. Maybe I just misunderstood the intent. @NicoleIsEnough?
水流 is probably the only common word here… 土間 might show up in books with similar settings, and I think 麝香 is used again in the book but definitely not a common word. If you’re still busy studying the most common 10k then I would probably only learn 水流 and 土間.
You could also check floflo and look up how many times the vocab shows up in the book and then decide whether it’s worth learning. (土間 shows up 11 times, 水場 only once, 水流 three times, 麝香 only twice, 粘液 14 times, for example)
First week is here everyone!
Yes, that was my intent, that people go back and set it to „I‘m finished“ if they want to share that information, pretty much in the same way people might go back and change from „I‘m lagging behind“ to „l‘m reading along“. I added this because in previous books‘ threads people would sometimes post that they finished the week‘s reading, and I also often had the wish to be able to communicate this (and some others said this as well in private conversation) but I don’t want to clutter the threads with this, and so I tried to add a more systematic way of sharing this information. I noticed that in Kitchen quite a few people used it (but ofc not everybody).
