Even though we’ll still be reading 獣の奏者 book 2 for another 4.5 months, I wanted to get everyone’s opinions on reading other 上橋菜穂子 books after we’re done with this one. Below is a poll with various books and paces, with very rough estimates on how long it would take to read the book.
Some additional notes:
- These estimates assume one/two chapters per week as indicated, which may not quite make sense depending on how short or long the chapters are. For example, 狐笛のかなた seems to have several short chapters, so even though my estimates are based on one chapter per week, combining some chapters into a single week may make more sense.
- I’m leaving out 鹿の王 because it’s two long books or four mid-length books to tell a single story, which I think would be way too long of a commitment.
- It’s fair to consider 獣の奏者 books 3 and 4 a sequel to books 1 and 2 (they were published three years after the first two books). We’d either want to read neither of them or both of them.
Which of the following would you consider joining (assuming start date is early 2021)?
- 獣の奏者 books 3 and 4 ~~ 1 chapter per week (1072 pages, 65 weeks)
- 獣の奏者 books 3 and 4 ~~ 2 chapters per week (1072 pages, 33 weeks)
- 狐笛のかなた ~~ 1 chapter per week (392 pages, 27 weeks)
- 狐笛のかなた ~~ 1-2 chapters per week depending on length (392 pages, 20 weeks)
- 狐笛のかなた ~~ 2 chapters per week (392 pages, 14 weeks)
- 精霊の守り人 ~~ 1 chapter per week (360 pages, 19 weeks)
- 精霊の守り人 ~~ 2 chapters per week (360 pages, 10 weeks)
- Some other 上橋菜穂子 book / some other pace (please explain)

Oh, of course. That would require you to write something, which you usually don’t do. 
By the way while I’m at it, I will not vote because I feel I’ve had enough of this author for the time being (after 6 of her books)…
Don’t know whether you read my review in the tadoku thread, but in any case, at least books 3 and 4 had some sections that were quite the drag, so it might not be an ideal pick anyway.

Yeah I read your review. That was also partly why I didn’t include it. I’ll probably still read it eventually, but I’m not in a rush.
How many weeks did it take you to read all four books by the way?

Some clarification on how I voted:
I chose all the books because I’d be down to read all of them, but I’d be most interested in finishing 獣の奏者 (doesn’t matter if there is something else in between as long as it happens before I get too impatient).
I chose the 1 week pace because that is what I know I can manage at the moment. But it’s such a huge time commitment! In any case I would hope that in such a long period of time my Japanese reading pace would grow enough to go at the faster pace. I’d probably still try to follow the club if the 2-week pace was chosen but I might not be able to keep up/ burn out depending on life and if it makes me unable to read anything else at the same time.
It’s too bad that I love reading long sagas but can only read at a turtle’s pace at the moment

I don’t remember exactly when I started, but it was around early-mid April, and I finished on July 8th. So 3 months, give or take. But I spent a crazy amount of time on it, which puts this somewhat into perspective.

This is the main reason I’m not sure about reading books 3 and 4 with the group, especially at the pace of one chapter per week. I’m hoping 獣の奏者 book 2 will feel conclusive, in which case I wouldn’t mind waiting to read the sequel anyway.
Personally, I’m most interested in reading 狐笛のかなた next, largely because it’s a standalone book. But I’d be up for 精霊の守り人 as well. I watched the anime of the latter, and while I didn’t enjoy it as much as 獣の奏者 it was still interesting. I suspect the book may be better than the anime (as you might expect) due to having narration and insight into the main character’s mind.

上橋菜穂子 that is the author right? I don’t know for other books because I’m not an author kinda guys I prefer to know the summary of the story(what is it about/the fourth cover) I want to read the other two because I’m a completionist and I love to finish a series. I don’t mind the week because since I will be reading 本好き soon I don’t know what I will be able to read so one week or two works for now. I do like the author but I don’t know about committing to reading all of her stories. My schedule is already blocked by reading all the Re Zero books sooo… long therm commitment is hard to predict. If the stories interest me and the speed is good I would like to join though

I am up for trying whichever! I voted just for 獣の奏者 because I wouldn’t want to start any of the author’s other books until I finished that, but I could read those on my own and then catch up (hopefully) with whatever other people are doing, so either way is good.

Why is that? I personally find that reading a variety of things rather than focusing on one series keeps things fresh, especially when there’s a lot of dense fantasy worldbuilding.

I don’t have any specific, compelling reason, it is just a personal preference! I like to focus on a variety of things, for sure, possibly too many things, but if it’s the same author, I’d rather go through things one at a time.

All of the options. I really like her stories.
While 獣の奏者 is the only one of her books I’ve read, I really enjoyed the 精霊の守り人 anime (and to a lesser extent the live action movies). I also own it already which is a plus. Continuing 獣 or starting 守り人 would probably be my top choices but I don’t know anything about 狐笛のかなた yet so I’ll have to look into that as well.
Now to stop procrastinating and try to catch up on last week’s reading…
