獣の奏者 chapter 3, part 3 discussion

Well this part was much easier to read.

Is that not what the following sentence is referring to? It’s the sentence right before the part you were referring to. Nugan is presumably speculating, but it does seem to be what he’s thinking.

Sentence

ヨジェの暗殺を企てるような不忠者たちの集団を罰する、罰すると言いながら、野放しにしているのは、父と兄の心の中に自分たちがヨジェにとって代わりたいという欲望が潜んでいるからだ。

Oh, ok, I didn’t actually make the connection between that and what @icefang97 said actually.
The main difference are 取って代わる: to take the throne/land of someone else, to usurp and 潜む which makes it sound like they might not even be aware of that desire themselves. At the very least it does not show publicly.
(Difference between 隠れる and 潜む: https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/thsrs/8448/meaning/m0u/ )

So that sentence means that they secretly desire (maybe unconsciously) to take the throne. I understood @icefang97’s sentence as them wanting to replace the ヨジェ with someone else (that is, not themselves), in a way that was way more active. Again, I can see the connection now, but I somehow didn’t when reading their post

Seeing 取って代わる in kanji is helpful. Since it was written as ヨジェにとって代わる I kept reading it as にとって + 代わる.

It might not even be true! I feel like ヌガン is being played by the uncle - ダミヤ? - and isn’t the most reliable narrator in this regard. The eldest son (I will learn their names at some point :joy:) was also convinced he and his father had very different aspirations, so if anything the fact that ヌガン thinks they have one and the same shows there’s something someone doesn’t know. There most certainly is a lot we don’t know yet.

Oh I don’t think it is, at least not for the older brother, who seems too much into the next ヨジェ to plan anything more nefarious than proposing to her. However, ヌガン does believe that.

シュナン just wants to unify the kingdom again. Yeah, that’s it. No other reason.

He is obviously only thinking of sacrificing himself for the greater good. Yep.

Such plotting.

I’m looking up words in this chapter after reading it earlier.
Could someone please clarify the phrase 一歩心をひいて in the sentence 一点に気をとらえることなく、一歩心をひいて、全体を感じるようにするのである。 It’s a couple of lines past the first asterisk.

一歩 can mean “small degree, small amount”. For 心を引く there’s this: https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/心を引く

I’m not quite sure I understand the nuance of that definition well enough to translate the sentence to English, but hopefully that helps.

一歩引く - to be physically or emotionally distant from something / a step removed. For example 一歩引いて眺める, look at something from a step further away/ getting the big picture.
From the link @seanblue shared 心を引く seems to be fairly equivalent to 気を引く, which I understand to mean something like ‘be drawn to something’, or rather ‘draw someone’s 気・心 to something’.

The way I understand this phrase, イアル goes into a certain frame of mind for his bodyguard work - without having his attention caught by any one thing, he draws his attention (maybe focus works better?) back a bit - I imagine this like centering in himself, not particularly interested in anyone thing - and tries to ‘feel’ the whole of it.

I think this is a pretty difficult concept to wrap in words, or maybe I just haven’t understood it sufficiently either. To my understanding, イアル enters a meditative/spiritual state to ‘feel out’ the whole situation/environment.

:man_shrugging:
Asking the difficult questions today! Also I didn’t know you could have the big emoticon on here too. The more you know.

I think you mean イアル. :stuck_out_tongue:

Gosh darn it these names.

I’m not so sure anymore now that I have seen @seanblue’s link, but I did not read it like that. I thought it was 一歩引く as you said (so taking a step back) with 心をjust being a specifier (so “emotionally”).
You don’t mix and match expressions except if you are trying to make a pun, but I’m not 100% sure anymore.

That you understood it in the way I did is making me feel more sure about it, haha.

If mix&match is unusual, I’m fine with just assuming it’s not the case here either. I don’t think a pun would be very appropriate plot and style wise.

Finally done with chapter 3, whew!

I have to say I actually do find it very interesting that we are being introduced to all these new characters with their different perspectives on each other, as well as the world building. But reading it is harder so the global enjoyment factor suffers somewhat.

On to chapter 4!
