本好きの下剋上: Volume 4+ discussion thread

Maybe I’ll add you back in two years when I’m done the series!

(Mostly because I’ll probably forget to re-add you sooner…)

It’s fine, I’ll post something when the series is over.

Edit: I just checked the illustrations and chapters titles.
As expected, the chapter from the point of view of a different character was pushed back to after the epilogue. That’s sad. I really thought it was amazing when I read it through the webnovel, but now it is put at a time where the reader doesn’t care anymore…
As for the illustration, the text does mention that adult マイン is stacked, and the illustrator didn’t miss that. Well, I did expect it, so, whatever. It’s not that bad compared to other things I have seen in LN aimed to a male audience.

And I just finished it! It was a lot of fun.
Even though I read that content already, I have forgotten enough of the details that it feels fresh anyway.
A while ago, I was wondering about what the author was going to do about a plot point that relied on inconsistencies that have been fixed in the published edition and… that just disappeared. So that’s fine I guess. It was minor too.

As for spoilers, I’ll just leave it to

My favorite part of volume 28

Edit: also, 4 months until the next book that I will also read in 3 days.

I’m still on book 7

Summary

What’s the reading for 版紙 anyway? Some of these words have appeared 20+ times, but I never know what to think about them since they’re not in the dictionary.

I don’t know for sure, but feels like はんし to me. Quick search through jisho shows no words where 紙 gets rendaku’d to じ. And it seems like when the other kanji in the word use on’yomi (版 only has on’yomi) that 紙 is on’yomi as well.

I also think it’s はんし, since this link mentions 下版紙 as げはんし

That being said, that word doesn’t show up either in Google, so I don’t know. Still, @seanblue’s argument makes a lot of sense.

Hehe, found one that goes against the trend: 版下(はんした). It was in the thing Nafu shared.

But yeah, seems like the reading most likely is はんし then :3

It is pronounced はんし in the audiobook

I gotta say book 7 is definitely my favorite so far :durtle_love: Almost completed.

I have a question

はるか高みに続く階段を上がっていった (the green part below)

Is this a way to say that he passed away? :eyes: :sweat_drops:

Yes.

I’m glad you’re enjoying this book. I hope you’ll enjoy the next arc as well!

Gotta love roundabout expressions.

Glad you’re enjoying book 7. Out of the twelve books I’ve read so far, books 6, 7, and 10 are my favorites.

This is one of the recurring noble society euphemisms in the book.

I started reading the fourth arc after a long hiatus and I’m a bit… disenchanted. A lot of the noble characters seem to be a bit on the shallow / caricature side. It doesn’t help that the list is ever expanding, so there’s less room to spend on each one, and of course noble culture is supposed to be about keeping your emotions in check as much as possible, but at times it also seems like the interactions are exaggerated to a point of doing a comedy routine.

I feel that has more to do with the hiatus and less with a difference in content  I didn’t notice any difference in the society between arcs.

Do you have any example in mind?

I don’t know… are there any scenes in the fourth arc as emotional as when Lutz confronted Myne or where Myne is as angry one someone’s behalf as when she stood up to the 神殿長 at the temple? I mean, not that I want all the character interactions to be extreme like that, but I just feel like there was more depth to lower city and even temple characters and interactions than there has been after her adoption.

But it could well be that I’m remembering the previous books in a more positive light due to nostalgia or something.

There are quite a few, particularly when dealing with Grandfather or Justus or Angelica, but for example the wossname teacher fainting upon seeing Lessy and the reactions around Justus cross-dressing come to mind.

I’m not sure if that’s rhetorical or if you want spoilers. I’ll keep it to a simple yes/no, and you choose if you want to click on the

act 4 spoiler drop down

YMMV but based on the examples you gave, yes.

I would not have guessed you are talking about ユストクス if it wasn’t for your spoiler. Lessy also got me confused for a second :joy:

ボニファティウス and アンゲリカ are two of my favorite characters, so I guess I can’t really relate. Can’t say I care much for ユストクス, but anyway, all three were already present in arc 3.

About the teacher’s reaction, people in universe are saying she is overdoing it, so I wouldn’t call that a caricature (except if you mean that she is too obvious as an antagonist?). As for ユストクス’s part, I have to admit I only remember it happened, not the details. I was only disappointed that ローゼマイン was so against it.

Since I don’t really the issue with any of those, I can’t really tell you if it will get better, worse, or stay the same, sorry :disappointed:

It’s not that I have anything against Bonifatius, or Angelica, for that matter. And just occasional jokes here and there would be fine. It’s just that the constant comedy routines with them and others are getting to be a bit too much. And yeah, it didn’t start in arc 4, come to think of it, but I guess either all the action and ingredient gathering in arc 3 distracted from it or they were more subdued there.

I’ll keep reading anyway, so I guess I’ll see for myself.

I found that it’s much easier for me to remember the characters if I look up their English/German forms in the wiki. I’ve had lots of moments of “Who’s that then?” with less prominent characters like Lieseleta/Brunhilde/Judith or Zach/Ingo/Johan. Like, it’s very hard for me to remember something like カンフェル whereas I immediately know that Kämpfer means fighter.

I see names of characters that has not been introduced as of Arc 2

No you don’t. :stuck_out_tongue:

I remember he is the priest who’s almost always mentioned along with フリターク. They have some differences, but I always forgot which is which.

Wait, so the English or German version adapted ユストクス as justus? How does that work :joy:

I have no idea, but that’s how it’s in the wiki, which is apparently based on the official English translation. I would have guessed something like Eustace myself.
