暁のヨナ (Akatsuki no Yona) Book Club Home Thread

I just remembered Daylights Savings starts on the 14th. Did you guys take that into account when filling out the spreadsheet?I didn’t but mine would be the same either way.

I did take it into account.
I was wondering if you’d be willing to ping a mod and make the main post a wiki so I could make the character sign up sheet, or if we are doing weekly discussion posts! No rush; I’m getting a little ahead of myself in organizing.

It’s fine! I love the enthusiasm! Pardon my ignorance but what’s a wiki?

I did plan on having a different discussion thread for each volume. I perused some smaller miscellaneous book clubs’ weekly discussion threads and some were empty or barely posted in so I wanted to avoid that and just make one for each volume.

A wiki just means that anyone can edit the first post. It’s good for things like bookclubs with read-alouds because people can add themselves to character sign up sheets. A mod of this site does have to make it; you can’t designate a post as a wiki yourself to my knowledge.

Hi @moderators ! Can you make the first post editable to everyone, please?

@Mods :blush:

Edit: oh I guess @ moderators works too, I’ve just never seen that one. I wonder why it’s just bold and not like the other tags, maybe it doesn’t ping

:woman_shrugging: I’ve never pinged a mod before. If it’s not obvious by now, I don’t usually browse the forums

8 am PST will be 4pm for me before we change time, so that is fine.

Since we will be reading up to page 31 I want to make sure I have the correct page 31.

Is this the final line of the page?

雨の音。。。?いや

For reading roles for the first 31 pages, I see:

  1. Hak
  2. Yona
  3. Yona’s dad
  4. Random soldier guy with bandana
  5. Su-won
  6. Mangaka (the one box with the author’s commentary)
Yona speaks so much though that if we have seven people we can split this up. Or even split it up with the person reading the Mangaka’s commentary. Not sure if this is normally read.

How do we normally pick roles? Is it first come first serve or do we do a lottery draw if multiple people want the same character?

I would actually skip the author commentary, but not sure how it is usually done.

I’m fine avoiding the author’s commentary too. Whatever everyone prefers. There is no furigana for the author’s commentary but we can still read it if everyone wants to.

That’s the one! We will be skipping the author’s commentary. I was thinking first come first serve to make it simpler but try not to pick the same character two weeks in a row. If there’s a popular character, then it’s fair to wait until everyone who wants to gets a chance to read for them before picking them again.

Thanks! That idea sounds good.

I’ve started adding vocabulary for the vocab sheet. Hak is speaking with a dialect or old speaking pattern or maybe just using very formal words? He says ぐじ instead of かみ ( 髪) and のーみそ instead of あたま (頭). I don’t know what exactly it is. Is anyone familiar with this?

Yeah I think I can help here. お髪 (おぐし) is just a polite word for hair. のーみそ is actually referring specifically to the brain rather than just the head. The usual kanji for this would be 脳みそ (which you’ll learn on WK at some point!), rather than 頭. You’ll find a lot of times that authors will use different furigana and kanji combinations for clarity, double meanings, jokes, etc.

@mods is the correct one! And I’ve turned the first post into a wiki.

@JenK Thank you x 2! That’s good to know

@Ducklingscap I don’t mind you reading and filling the vocab sheet ahead of schedule, but please refrain from asking questions in the home thread. It’s best to have questions about a particular volume in that volume’s discussion thread so that in the future people with the same question can search that particular thread. I’ll have the volume 1 discussion thread up this weekend closer to our start date.

I’ve just noticed the whole discussion about the read aloud session times.
So you have decided 8:00 am PST, am I right?
That should work fine also for me. I’m really curious about the read aloud thing, though not sure if it will work for me. So for the time being count me in.

@seanblue Hello! Can you add the club to the discord server? We have decided on a day and time for our read-alouds (Sat 8am pst).
