放浪息子 (Wandering Son) miscellaneous discussion

Random comments on volume 5

Summary
  • 12: pretty convenient that several relevant characters just happen to be standing close enough to fit in the same panel
  • Oh, and Chiba has different hair again
  • 16: it’s the dramatic line from volume 3 again!
  • 38: That was both amusing and unexpected
  • 56: That’s… quite the reaction
  • Not any specific page, but most of the characters in this manga are way more stubborn than I’ve ever been. I guess I’m more like Sasa in that regard
  • 104: Maho doing that must be really rare judging by the reaction
  • 132: He didn’t say which Nitori, though
  • 148: that’s probably not what he was expecting
  • 153: I wonder if there is any reason for why this specific chapter is the first one to have colour pages or if the author just felt like adding some
  • I guess I ended up reading the entirety of volume 5 too

And on a completely unrelated note, somebody near where I live is playing really loud music and it’s annoying

I thought the same thing.

You sure are going through these quickly! You’ll be past me in a few days at this rate!

Oh wow.

Meanwhile I’m rereading the last chapter of volume and remembering why I got stuck there.
I can’t understand half the things マコちゃん says
Page 182 is like… I get the idea but what is grammar I don’t even

You could always try asking questions if there’s something you don’t understand. I’m not sure if I’ll personally be able to give anyone any good answers(explaining stuff is not exactly something I’m good at), but judging from the times I’ve asked stuff, someone will probably give you an answer. I personally mostly settle for just understanding what things mean though and usually don’t worry too much about why it means that.

Definitely ask your questions! I’m sure someone will be able to help.

Okay so I finished the chapter and the rest wasn’t so bad but I’m still not sure about these:

Vol. 3 Page 182

そんなの言いたいやつに言わせとけばいいじゃない
I don’t think I’ve dealt with the とけば bit before but I’ve looked it up and I think it might mean something like… “You should have told (her) what you wanted to say” but nuances escape me.

ぼくら末広安那の顔色うかがって生きてかなきゃなんないの~~~?
Not even sure where to start with this one…

Btw Page 185 is too cute

Somebody else explained one part of one of those sentences earler in this topic,at least :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, I went ahead and started reading the 4th volume just to check it out but the first chapter was much easier and pretty funny so I’m just here to comment some stuff (I still can’t do a whole volume at once like some people :eyes:).

Volume 4 Chapter 1:

Maho is going full Maho

Page 10: Those eyes
Page 15: Savage. And 瀬谷’s face.
Page 28: You are not acting very ストレート lately Maho

I’ll start writing comments on volume 6 stuff, but I’m not done reading it yet.

Summary
  • page before character introductions: It looks like it would be hard for everyone to hold that pose for any larger amount of time
  • 19-20: I wonder what the two random people in the background think is happening
  • Chiba’s eyes looked pretty emotionless for most of the chapter
  • 35: that’s an odd thing to just say out loud like that
  • 41: Don’t apologize too forcefully or you’ll probably have to apologize for the apology too!
  • 44: the bottom panel makes me think of bloom into you, mostly because of the ds
  • 76: too bad just wanting it won’t make it true
  • 79: that’s quite the overreaction
  • I also just realized that I commented about plays in manga earlier and now there is another one
  • 109: Well, there are some stories that end that way
  • It’s cool to see Nitori and Takatsuki get along again in general
Vol. 3, pg. 182 explanations

そんなの言いたいやつに言わせとけばいいじゃない
This means something like “It’s fine to just let people who want to say that kind of stuff say it”. There are a couple of things here that make it sound like Mako is trying to be a real friend to Nitorin by looking down on the person who is talking bad about him. 1) He uses やつ for person and 2) he is using the -(a)seteoku grammar for “let someone do something”.

The -(a)seru verb ending (commonly called the causative form) usually means to either make something happen or let something happen, and from what I understand, adding the ておく to the causative makes it sound like the speaker is talking to/about someone below them. Also, @seanblue explained it a little, but ておく is frequently shortened to とく in speech.

ぼくら末広安那の顔色うかがって生きてかなきゃなんないの~~~?
@Ditto20 explained the meaning of “顔色うかがって”. The rest is 生きていかなければならないの (have to keep on living our lives), but with a lot of abbreviation from casual speech.

(Not so fun fact: my cat projectile vomited off the chair next to me while I was writing this…)

I finished the series!

End of series spoilers, click at your own peril.

It didn’t at all end how I was expecting based on the cover art, but I still thought the ending was pretty satisfying. The volume 15 cover art in particular was pretty misleading when you’re looking at it from the beginning of the series. When I realized how long it was going to take for them to get through elementary school, I started counting volumes to figure out how on earth they were going to get to Nitori and Takatsuki having kids in a coherent time frame.

I really liked how Anna was supportive of Nitori from when they started dating up until the end of the series (in spite of Nitori’s sister being a jerk about their relationship pretty much all the time). It seemed like they both cared for each other a lot, and I really liked them as a couple. Nitori also really came into his own over the last couple of books. I was also happy to see Takatsuki finding her way in the world, although some of it was depressing (like her trying to get even skinnier for her modeling career :face_with_raised_eyebrow:).

Overall I really liked this series, and I’m glad I took the time to read it. I watched the anime several years ago, so now I want to go back and re-watch it.

Congrats on finishing! I’ll be sure to click your spoilers whenever I finish the series. Hopefully that’ll be in the next few months, but who knows since I’m trying to read two books at once soon.

Mako is the hero we need

and yeah, while I never finished the series, Anna ends up pretty cool.

Oh wow I would have never guessed the whole thing was an abbreviation. Casual speech is craaazy.

(Oh, no, poor thing :anguished:)

You’ve probably seen all of these abbreviations individually. Maybe just not all together.

  • 生きていく => 生きてく (similar to ている => てる)
    Therefore, 生きていかない => 生きてかない

  • なければならない => なきゃならない (sometimes the ならない is left off, but here it’s included)

  • ならない => なんない
This kind of change is pretty common, like つまらない becoming つまんない

Hope that helps!

She’s ok! I give her part of a can of wet food for dinner and I’m pretty sure she ate it too fast, because it was gone in a hot second (it’s her favorite).

I couldn’t stop reading volume 8. I read 6 chapters today to finish the volume.

Volume 8 spoilers

Things sure are moving along now! Finally got to see Takatsuki go to school in the 学ラン, not to mention the major development with Shuu going to school in the girl’s uniform. Great way to end the volume.

Also, I love Anna’s character so much. Her interactions with Shuu, Takatsuki, and Chiba at the karaoke was great.

I don’t think I’ll bother commenting on anything specific about the rest of the volume, but I have finished reading it. It felt like volume 6 maybe was slightly harder than the first 5? (still very manageable though).

Also, I won’t get back to where I have volumes 7-15 until sunday evening, so I’ll be taking a short break from reading this series!

I was just looking through the polls in the first post. @Kazzeon @Darcinon You planning to read past volume one? (No pressure, just curious.)
