Meanwhile I’m rereading the last chapter of volume and remembering why I got stuck there.
I can’t understand half the things マコちゃん says
Page 182 is like… I get the idea but what is grammar I don’t even
You could always try asking questions if there’s something you don’t understand. I’m not sure if I’ll personally be able to give anyone any good answers(explaining stuff is not exactly something I’m good at), but judging from the times I’ve asked stuff, someone will probably give you an answer. I personally mostly settle for just understanding what things mean though and usually don’t worry too much about why it means that.
Okay so I finished the chapter and the rest wasn’t so bad but I’m still not sure about these:
Vol. 3 Page 182
そんなの言いたいやつに言わせとけばいいじゃない
I don’t think I’ve dealt with the とけば bit before but I’ve looked it up and I think it might mean something like… “You should have told (her) what you wanted to say” but nuances escape me.
ぼくら末広安那の顔色うかがって生きてかなきゃなんないの~~~?
Not even sure where to start with this one…
Well, I went ahead and started reading the 4th volume just to check it out but the first chapter was much easier and pretty funny so I’m just here to comment some stuff (I still can’t do a whole volume at once like some people ).
Volume 4 Chapter 1:
Maho is going full Maho
Page 10: Those eyes
Page 15: Savage. And 瀬谷’s face.
Page 28: You are not acting very ストレート lately Maho
そんなの言いたいやつに言わせとけばいいじゃない
This means something like “It’s fine to just let people who want to say that kind of stuff say it”. There are a couple of things here that make it sound like Mako is trying to be a real friend to Nitorin by looking down on the person who is talking bad about him. 1) He uses やつ for person and 2) he is using the -(a)seteoku grammar for “let someone do something”.
The -(a)seru verb ending (commonly called the causative form) usually means to either make something happen or let something happen, and from what I understand, adding the ておく to the causative makes it sound like the speaker is talking to/about someone below them. Also, @seanblue explained it a little, but ておく is frequently shortened to とく in speech.
ぼくら末広安那の顔色うかがって生きてかなきゃなんないの~~~? @Ditto20 explained the meaning of “顔色うかがって”. The rest is 生きていかなければならないの (have to keep on living our lives), but with a lot of abbreviation from casual speech.
(Not so fun fact: my cat projectile vomited off the chair next to me while I was writing this…)
It didn’t at all end how I was expecting based on the cover art, but I still thought the ending was pretty satisfying. The volume 15 cover art in particular was pretty misleading when you’re looking at it from the beginning of the series. When I realized how long it was going to take for them to get through elementary school, I started counting volumes to figure out how on earth they were going to get to Nitori and Takatsuki having kids in a coherent time frame.
I really liked how Anna was supportive of Nitori from when they started dating up until the end of the series (in spite of Nitori’s sister being a jerk about their relationship pretty much all the time). It seemed like they both cared for each other a lot, and I really liked them as a couple. Nitori also really came into his own over the last couple of books. I was also happy to see Takatsuki finding her way in the world, although some of it was depressing (like her trying to get even skinnier for her modeling career ).
Overall I really liked this series, and I’m glad I took the time to read it. I watched the anime several years ago, so now I want to go back and re-watch it.
Congrats on finishing! I’ll be sure to click your spoilers whenever I finish the series. Hopefully that’ll be in the next few months, but who knows since I’m trying to read two books at once soon.
She’s ok! I give her part of a can of wet food for dinner and I’m pretty sure she ate it too fast, because it was gone in a hot second (it’s her favorite).
I couldn’t stop reading volume 8. I read 6 chapters today to finish the volume.
Volume 8 spoilers
Things sure are moving along now! Finally got to see Takatsuki go to school in the 学ラン, not to mention the major development with Shuu going to school in the girl’s uniform. Great way to end the volume.
Also, I love Anna’s character so much. Her interactions with Shuu, Takatsuki, and Chiba at the karaoke was great.
I don’t think I’ll bother commenting on anything specific about the rest of the volume, but I have finished reading it. It felt like volume 6 maybe was slightly harder than the first 5? (still very manageable though).
Also, I won’t get back to where I have volumes 7-15 until sunday evening, so I’ll be taking a short break from reading this series!
