Also joining the IBC for the first time here I don’t have much experience reading something of this level, so I was pretty nervous, but I just checked over the first page and it’s not as hard as I was expecting. So while I would prefer a slower 15 pg/week pace, I think I should still be able to keep up with the currently decided on pace.
(Also why the pear emoji? Is it because the uterus is shaped like a pear?)
Unfortunately I only have one usable card right now. (Well, there’s also my company card but I doubt I can convince my accountant that it’s a business expense…)
Oof, I do need to do more listening practice but I think that will be a bit hardcore for me…
So you can’t download the ebook directly, you need the Kobo app? I suppose that it seems to be the most promising way but it’s still wild that it’s so complicated.
I regularly buy ebooks from Russian sites and despite being sort-of at war with them I can just use my foreign credit card, pay without having to pretend that I’m living in Leningrad and directly download an epub straight from the website.
Unfortunately it doesn’t seem that this book has been translated into Russian, otherwise I could have used this club for Russian practice instead…
While I’m going to try to read at the club pace, I think it’s pretty awesome of you proposing and handling that!
I managed to make the jump from the BBC to IBC after reading コンビニ人間 with the Intermediary Primer club! So it’s very cool of you to open this opportunity to yourself and others! I’m rooting for you guys! \o/
I’m not sure if this breaks any official rules, but I’ve created a ‘preview week’ thread.
I think there are a few people (like me) who might be ready to dip their toe into the book. So I’ve created a week 0 thread - focusing on the first calendar day. That should also make a nice gentle introduction for anyone interested in reading along at IBC primer pace. Of course, regular IBC members shouldn’t feel any need to start until next week, and can join straight in at week one. But if you want to jump in and join me for the preview week, you’d be most welcome!
I don’t think there are any „official rules“ other than the ones you set for the club
On the contrary, I like that you try to make the club more accessible this way!
If you like, you can add the primer start date to the IBC OP (it’s a wiki so you can edit it no problem) as an optional starting date, and please also announce it in the IBC
Got my physical copy~ This is my first book club, hoping that the routine will help me actually read a book consistently! I don’t think I’ve finished a book since high school. Sad because I used to love to read.
I updated my post with the primer pace and I set it to start with the club’s Week 0, which is really nice (thanks @Domjcw ) as that means the first two weeks of the primer pace align perfectly with the club threads. I hope that provides a motivating pace for anyone reading slower!
In that post I also have other scenarios that I mention that might be motivating for some people:
If you beat the primer pace and catch up with the main club, good for you!
If you keep up with this pace, after story 2 you will have reached the target club pace and you would be in time to start the next IBC pick with the club (instead of story 3 or alongside it).
If you continue at a page a day pace, then you will finish story 1 when the main club finishes the book.
totally of topic, but do you have a tip for searching audible for japanese books. everytime i search for japanese books i get a whole lot of textbook audio or anime voice actor stuff. and there is no real way (at least i haven’t found on) to filter the books effectively. i mean i find the books if i know what i want to listen to and search for it with the japanese name, but browsing is sooo hard, that i always give up…
I also use german audible btw.
I’m on German audible, too. In general I have the best luck searching for titles (sorry, not what you want to hear!). Someone on my log gave tips for browsing here. But otherwise, I’ve not found a good way to browse.
thank you.
that helped a bit. at least it gave me a hint of how to search.
i think audible is kind of stupid in the sense that you only find what you are looking for. if i go through “stöbern” i find the same 25 books they always tell me to listen to… but i think prime is the same. they tell me to watch movies i already watched and stuff. no idea what the algorithm is thinking…
Thanks @mitrac for making a primer pace Since this is my first time joining the ibc I don’t yet know what speed I’m capable of, so I’ll be using the primer pace for now.
The app is useless but if you use the website you can filter by genre and from there by language. I usually then filter by popular or new releases depending on what category I’m in.
You can also follow authors you like to get emails when something new by them is released.
That’s such a good tip, thank you! The trick is, at least on my browser, after I click on the genre, then click the link that says “Everything from (that genre)” and then it’s on that page all the filters show up including language. From there it’s even possible to remove the first genre filter and browse all books. There are tons!
Great, I’m glad it’s helpful! I also have no idea how fast I’ll be able to read this, so it felt like a nice way to keep up motivation just in case I turn out to be slower than the main club.
