夏目友人帳 Off-Shoot Book Club (Currently: Volume 1)

Welcome to the 夏目友人帳 Off-Shoot Book Club!

This is an off-shoot of the original 夏目友人帳 Book Club, which ran in 2018, and it will be following a schedule. A handful of us decided to revive it, only to find out we weren’t the only ones who were interested! This was originally for the Beginner Book Club. 夏目友人帳 is considered level 26 on Learn Natively.

Current Chapter: 1

Series Blurb

Takashi Natsume has always been aware of the supernatural world, but after he inherits a magical book from his grandmother, the supernatural world is aware of him!

Takashi Natsume can see the spirits and demons that hide from the rest of humanity. He has always been set apart from other people because of his gift, drifting from relative to relative, never fitting in. Now he’s a troubled high school student who has come to live in the small town where his grandmother grew up. And there he discovers that he has inherited more than just the Sight from the mysterious Reiko.

When Reiko was Takashi’s age, she bound the names of demons and spirits in her Book of Friends, enslaving them to her capricious whim. Now Takashi is the owner of the book, and the creatures will do anything to get their names back.

Discussion Rules

  1. Please use spoiler tags or [details="spoilers"] for major events in the current chapter, or any content from future chapters!
  2. When asking for advice, please try to provide as much context as you can! 夏目友人帳 doesn’t really do page numbers, so surrounding context is helpful.
  3. Please don’t be afraid to ask questions, or share what you learned while reading! We’re all here to learn, and the threads we create will hopefully serve as a resource to people who read these volumes later on, too.
  4. Feel free to talk about more than just grammar or vocabulary! Insights about characters, how you felt about what happened—anything!
  5. Join the conversation!

Volume 1 Schedule

My intention is to have the schedule in the volume threads that I’ll create later. Since we’re reusing the old threads for volume one, I’m temporarily putting it here.

Chapter Start Date Pages
第一話 August 14 50 pages
第二話 August 29 50 pages
第三話 September 12 50 pages
第四話 September 26 40 pages

Remember to set the thread to Watching to receive updates!

Since people were asking about if we had a particular schedule, I wanted to get a post up quickly! For clarity, for volume 1 we’re reusing the threads for the original book club. For that reason, I wanted to ask people about what kind of schedule they would like for volume 1 here!

For the schedule so far, we had mostly talked about:

  • 1 chapter every two weeks
  • Potential preference for Friday or Sunday so it doesn’t conflict with IMC?

Does anyone have any other thoughts about a schedule for volume 1 or any preferences? Once we’ve settled on something, I can quickly write up a schedule for us to follow.

For the next volumes we’ll have our own threads, so it’ll be easier to reference!

Sounds great to me. Maybe post the link on the BBC to see if anyone she wants to join!

Also, check out the stickied posts on the book clubs section. There’s a master list of book clubs where you can link the offshoot, and there is a great post to help me book club leaders, although it looks like you already have that part down. Thanks so much for organising :glowing_star:

Of yeah, and put a big reminder to

set the thread to watching :eyes:

Ooh, really good idea! I’ll definitely do that. Plus adding to the sticky! Which I think needs to be updated for the BBC anyway!

Thank you for the reminder!! I just did that LOL

Did you (or anyone else in this thread) have any preference for Friday versus Sunday? I was thinking maybe Friday might be nice, because then responses could trickle in over the weekend!

I prefer Friday as well. Also, as club leader, sometimes it’s a bit easier than later in the weekend, at least for me, eg, if I’m away. So do what suits you well and people will adjust

A quick update that I’ve added a schedule for volume one to the main post here! In the future I’ll have the schedules posted in the individual volume threads.

that ship already sailed LOL

Saturday split the difference :face_with_steam_from_nose:
or how about Takashi Tuesdays

I also have no preference. I’m in too many clubs and now just start reading them on Friday in the order the clubs post. I guess I also run one of them too, lol, but that one posts Sunday (mostly bc I like having the reminder of my other clubs starting to remind me to post it ).
