ルリドラゴン ・ Ruri Dragon 🐲 (Absolute Beginner Book Club)

Heya,

I decided to participate. Will be my first book club, my first manga and basically my first immersion in general.
Looking forward to see how much I will be able to understand.

If I order now, it might take some time to get delivered… Those of you who know manga republic, does delivery take 2-3 weeks total, or do I need to add the handling time (10-15 business days) on top of that?

I can’t speak to delivery times from manga republic, but do keep in mind that the Bookwalker preview is pretty generous, so even if you don’t get the physical copy before the first week, you can read the free preview until your copy arrives for at least the first week (or possibly two; I’m not sure what the schedule is, yet).

The preview is the 50+ pages of chapter 1 if I remember correctly, so… at least 4 weeks even!

For me it’s been 2-3 weeks total.

Hello! It’s my first time joining this book club (also my first time posting on WaniKani community and I’m kinda nervous about it but everyone seems nice and helpful). I’ve been a pretty sporadic Japanese learner for years now and my kanji/grammar/vocabulary is extremely all over the place, but this manga looks super cute and manageable. よろしく~!

Welcome to the forums and to the book clubs! I’m quite excited to see so many newcomers for this book! :grinning:

Mine took about 13 days to arrive in total

Thanks for mentioning the bookwalker preview, that does make things easier for me!

Secondly, how do you folks generally deal with the new vocab? Have Jisho/Anki running on the side? My vocabulary isn’t where it could be right now, so I will need to look up words regularly, I think…

I just put it in google translate and then use yomi-chan on it to confirm. If I need to, I’ll also use DeepL or Ichi.moe

Just have a phone/pc ready when you want to read, whichever is less work for you to type japanese on. If you don’t plan on going straight away, you can probably just open up the vocab sheet and most words will be there most likely. I don’t put new words into any srs, because I don’t need the hassle, but if you feel like that would help, go for it.

Usually I have three windows open:

  • The reading app
  • A browser with jisho.org / thejadednetwork.com/sfx (for SFX) to look up words
  • A text editor to write down my questions (in post form, so it can go straight to the forum)

I can quickly type blindly, so I can usually enter the words while reading and then quickly glance over. And I prefer digital, because then I don’t have to awkwardly keep the manga open while trying to type…

We’ll also have a hopefully well-populated vocab sheet, so you might not even need to type things into jisho.org at all! Personally I prefer using jisho.org, but I’d guess there are more people using the vocab sheet instead than not.

Well, if it’s a game of posting monitors we’re playing

@TobiasW Any idea on what pages will be allocated per week yet? I just want to know where to allocated my notes, and what pages will count as ‘pages’ if you feel me (ie. not just 2 or 3 lines).

I will probably directly annotate the pages with vocab, grammar and things. I’ll only be using my phone to search for words. Then I’ll write down questions for this thread.

Alright, folks - here’s a proposal for the schedule.

Week Start Date Chapter Pages No. of pages with text
Week 1 Feb 18 Chapter 1 5-17 9 pages
Week 2 Feb 25 Chapter 1 18-26 9 pages
Week 3 Mar 4 Chapter 1 27-35 9 pages
Week 4 Mar 11 Chapter 1 36-49 11 pages
Week 5 Mar 18 Chapter 1 50-60 10 pages
Week 6 Mar 25 Chapter 2 61-75 11 pages
Week 7 Apr 1 Chapter 2 76-86 10 pages
Week 8 Apr 8 Chapter 3 87-98 10 pages
Week 9 Apr 15 Chapter 3 99-110 11 pages
Week 10 Apr 22 Chapter 4 112-130 17 pages
Week 11 Apr 29 Chapter 5 131-150 17 pages
Week 12 May 6 Chapter 6 151-172 17 pages
  • Pages are physical page numbers (they are printed on some pages).
  • No. of pages with text is the amount of pages with more than one short sentence.

The switch from 11 to 17 pages with text starting week 10 may look scary now, but usually by this point everybody has gotten a good hold on the grammar and writing style used, so it won’t be as hard as it might seem! (If anything, I’d have loved to make the jump sooner, but having all 21 pages of chapter 3 in one week seems a bit harsh to me.)

Thanks for making this ^^ Seems like a decent pace for this book, after a first quick glance browsing through the manga.

i wonder though, why not a steady page increase? would make more sense in my opinion then this jump. I guess it’s because of the length of the chapters, correct? I woudl support to split the last three dates into
week10 2/4 of chapter 4
week11 2/4 of chapter 4 and 1/4 of chapter 5
week 12 3/4 of chapter 5
week 13 chapter 6.

or maybe we can do something like this already in chapter 3? No matter what, I would prefer a more steady progress of page numbers

Taking 3 months to finish the book seems really slow to me. Less than 12 pages in a whole week is rather low in my opinion.

That said, I’m definitely not the kind of guy who transcribes every sentence and will re-read the same speech bubble over and over until I reach perfect understanding of that fragment before moving on, so I guess my approach naturally leads to being able to more easily read more pages at once.

There are a lot of things going into making a schedule, sadly it’s not usually enough to look at page numbers and make equal splits, because then you get an artificial cliffhanger in the middle. And 12 weeks is already quite a lot, I wouldn’t push it with 13.
Having bigger jumps and then immediately leveling off for a couple of weeks is great, because then you won’t feel a constant pressure of having to go faster and faster, you can get used to a speed, and once that’s down, the speed increases a bit.

I mean, it’s the abbc, and as I’ve seen, there’s a rather large number of first time readers. And you can’t really split it better, I’d rather not splice chapters together during a single week.
