Kyoumoto has a hallway filled end to end with books, but the first thing she can come up with for Fujino to sign is her own back? And Fujino actually does it? (Though the fact that Fujino spots a blank yonkoma template in someone else’s house, and her first idea is to pick it up and draw a strip about the situation that she’s currently in suggests perhaps her logic isn’t all there. )
Though I’m mildly confused as to why those fancy autograph squares they have are literally called “coloured paper”.
The “colored paper” confused me too, “maybe it means something like 色々 and it’s ‘scrap paper’ or ‘some paper’?” I guess. Maybe it’s like, good paper instead of what she usually sketches on.
your idol just dropped into your house, drew a comic about you, and left
you’re a primary schooler
all great reasons to freak out
According to this JPN gov librarian site, it’s because it the origins are in paper dyed white (paper at the time being closer to papyrus or parchment colour I guess?) and then cut to the square size for people to write shorter poems on … to give my layman’s interpretation of that answer, anyway. I checked a few quora sites but this seemed the rough consensus, plus this one has references, plus, you know, librarians
Loved the reading this week, things are really kicking off. Finally got to see the fated Fujino Kyoumoto meeting hahah. Fujino dropping her comic and it slipping perfectly under the door is just too funny. I didn’t expect the comedic timing of the panels to be so good in this but I really appreciate it.
But she’s just run outside to catch Fujino….I actually love this. Getting someone to sign your clothing (your back!) is just so much much more emotionally moving than handing over a piece of paper!
I am really enjoying this so far. Both times I sat down to read this I’ve accidentally read more than I intended. I love that Kyoumoto calls her 先生, that despite the difference in drawing ability she admires the plots Fujino came up with. When I’d read week 1 I thought she was showing off by being atmospheric before building that into a bigger story, but I completely misjudged her based on what little we saw.
京本 gets it! See, the little plots and stuff are fun, 藤野 is doing good work. Just like I said last time. This bit is definitely my favorite so far, seeing 藤野 be goofy drawing the comic, and I really like the early impression of 京本. This art style works well for the character – a little bit of an unkempt gremlin feel, but I mean that lovingly haha. It’s a simple plot but it’s neat how this scene simultaneously gives 藤野 a potentially new way to look at the work she was already doing and appreciate it more, while also kind of showing her firsthand what the negative side of 100% focusing on her art and nothing else would end up looking like. Cliffhanger to see how she takes it but I imagine, at least for the immediate future, not super well.
I wasn’t expecting 京本 to be 藤野’s fan
That was so adorable and hilarious for her to ask for an autograph on her back
I hope they join forces in the next pages, they have such complementary styles. 京本 has drawing technique but no plot and 藤野’s plots are really good but she’s lacking the technique.
Really loving this read, really curious about what’s next
I forgot to ask you all: what’s your favorite comic strip from 藤野 so far? I saw 京本 listing her favorites and I thought about asking everyone
My fave so far is the meteor one
