Professor Oak’s always been a little goofy in the anime, he isn’t very aware of his surroundings.

As for the other kid’s dialogue, I thought it was super cool as a kid and I stand by that 
It’s so weird reading this again for the first time in probably 15 or so years in a totally different language. Thanks to everyone for posting, especially loved the discourse on the pokemon names. I was also pretty shocked by the use of 俺様. I haven’t seen that used anywhere before so it really made me chuckle. Looking forward to the next chapter

Im trying to decipher the first page, like really learning the japanese there, so i have some questions.
Overall i think ill go to the next page now and try to work it out.

I think it’s a contraction of そんなのではだめ. 〜の after そんな makes it into a noun: https://www.tofugu.com/japanese-grammar/particle-no-nominalizer
And then for Nではだめだ, check this resource, for example: How to Express Prohibition and Obligation: だめだ, いけない, and ならない
So yeah, I guess it’s something like “if you do it like that it won’t work” ➝ “you shouldn’t do it like that”
もんだ (or ものだ) is a grammar point that means ‘should’, in a sort of generalised way. Like ‘one should always …’.
Happy to help you with grammar references, but don’t feel like you need to understand every last sentence before moving on. Might be a bit overwhelming and suck the fun right out of it in the long term. Unless, of course, you enjoy dissecting it all, in which case I’d say “keep 'em coming”

I’m a bit late but I just finished Week 1.
As a child I used to play Pokémon and later on I also watched the anime.
For many years I completely forgot about it, but 2 years ago my husband bought a game boy emulator and I played Pokémon yellow again !
I’m very happy that this manga was select for the book club, though I’m finding it more difficult than I initially thought, especially the rather colloquial expressions.
I think the protagonist’s personality is a bit different from the original anime that I watched as a child. Let’s see how it goes.
Don’t compare this to the anime, it’s supposed to be completely different
it follows the story of the game more than anything
Fun trivia:
This manga started publishing in Japan one month before the anime first aired (March vs April of 1997).
The anime likely started production first due to all the work, people, and planning involved, though!
