This volume is the last in the storyline, but there are continuations. Of note are Vol.13 in the 13-Vol set, which there is no e-book; and yet another manga vol. There are also other spin-offs.
Please vote here if you are interested in after Vol 12. Suggestions are welcome.
Not sure if I’ll read https://learnnatively.com/book/c83f9e5cad/ as I can’t preview the book, no e-book, and can’t find the book in a local bookstore (out of stock; not republished). And I would hate to buy and ship the book I can’t preview.
I couldn’t wait and just went ahead and finished the last chapter as well (sorry not sorry lol)
Ending and story comments
It’s funny how Matsuda feels like a fan theorizing of how Light could have lost when he seemed so all-knowing and kinda feels like a wink from the author to the fans on “He lost, get over it”. It’s also interesting how he left it philosophically open at the end on whether it was good for the world that kira died or not (with all the debauchery going on I guess, although it is part of human nature), which kinda also feels like the contrast between an authoritary and a democratic regime, but maybe I’m looking into it a bit too much.
I do feel like the quality dropped a bit after L died, but mostly in the last arc where I get that the idea was to get the big climax and have the reader with no clue of what’s going on, but it just feels like the mystery drags on a bit too much, and it does leave you wondering (like the author predicted) why Mikami wouldn’t have a cut page hidden somewhere in him like light does that he would 100% know to be the death note, but I think the point is that Near would then have found some way to replace it and the cycle continues.
Also poor Misa, just left without her memories, her lifespan quartered and the rest of her life dedicated to an uncaring “god”/ love of her life
Anyway, I rambled a bit too much!
I spied a bit what volume 13 was about and it seems to be mostly a behind the scenes and a recap from the author, so I’m fine with skipping it. I finished volume 12 now so I don’t mind starting the short stories whenever in the three options you put up
Light is smart and cool. The best. Original L has too much power and authority, and… peculiarity, but at least he is smart and extreme too.
Though years later feels a little like dragging on, but I am not sure if there is a way to write the story better. Other characters are here to continue the story.
Perhaps in Vol.13? I don’t have that much hope, but it depends on how the story could be written.
