Discussion guidelines

This thread is here to comment on your impressions of this week’s episodes and to ask any question you have regarding the vocabulary or the understanding of them

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  • Any potential spoiler for the current week’s watching need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  • Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  • Any information from later in the book than the current week’s watching (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the number of the episode and time of the section, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Been very busy two weeks, but I’ve still managed to watch along. I will try to watch along until the end, it’s going to be my first full series I’ve watched in Japanese, btw. how hard is it to start a Club or something, because I’m planning to watch House of Ninjas in Japanese and would love if others would watch along.

I’m joining this challenge super late. I’ve already watched a bunch of episodes. I might try watching the episodes once through with English subtitles, then a second time through with Japanese.

Have fun watching then! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, if your Japanese isn’t good enough yet, feel free to watch along in English! I did the exact same thing, I’ve watched Episode 1-9 in English half a year ago and am now watching it in Japanese

Yeah, I usually only pick out some vocabulary and short phrases. I’ve watched a few that I’ve already seen with English subtitles so that I can follow the story. I’m not going to actively worry about looking up grammar points because it’s way above my level right now.

I can recommend a tool called “Migaku”. Their Japanese Academy Course is pretty good and it scans the subtitles of a Netflix show, so that you can just hover over the word and it shows you the Dictionary

Thank you  I actually just saw an advertisement for that and was wondering how well it worked.

I’ve started using Migaku 2 months ago, by the time I started using it, I was already done with Genki 1 and 2, but I still went through their Academy Course and its pretty good, there were many things textbooks like Genki didn’t teach. Their Courses are surprisingly well. I will probably also use their Mandarin Course to get into Mandarin, they’ve also just recently released an Academy Course for Korean, but its still in Early Access. They’ve also got a Discord where you can ask for help or report bugs, Migaku definitely helped me into immersion. I went from reading a beginner book like 小さな森のオオカミちゃん to watching Delicious in Dungeon and Squid Game in full Japanese. They’ve also got their own SRS and Migaku will highlight words in the subtitles while watching that are specifically good as a flashcard. Only thing that you’ll have to get used to is that in their course and also with their flashcards is that you will have to recognize the certain Kanji even though you haven’t learned them in WaniKani yet. It’s difficult at first but you certainly get used to it! I also used a discount code from a Youtuber, where I was able to get 1 month free on top of my first months purchase, can definitely recommend Migaku

So if you want it to be part of the anime club, you can suggest it for a nomination on the club home post here:

Right now we’re watching this anime with the club, and the poll for the next anime has recently concluded with ノラガミ winning, so probably the next pool is in late march/early april depending on the ノラガミ schedule.

But there’s also no rule that a club has to be part of the overall anime club, so you can always just start a club. If you’re doing a stand alone club, it’s probably best to post a thread gathering interest a couple of weeks before you plan to start to see if anyone wants to join, but again, there’s no limits on who can do a stand alone club when.
