Discussion guidelines

This thread is here to comment on your impressions of this week’s episodes and to ask any question you have regarding the vocabulary or the understanding of them

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  • Any potential spoiler for the current week’s watching need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  • Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  • Any information from later in the book than the current week’s watching (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the number of the episode and time of the section, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

I watched the first two episodes today. I guess it’s sort of a rewatch as I accidentally watched these two episodes back in June when I got confused over which anime we were watching between this and Campfire Cooking in Another World.

Anyway, that means that it’s a nice measure of 6 months of listening progress. I think this is still a relatively hard anime (though thankfully Yuru Camp and Campfire Cooking have made me a lot better on the cooking vocab :p), so I did a lot of reading of JP subtitles, but at the same time I got a lot more from the anime, so I think that was decent.

I intended to start this on time and didn’t :upside_down_face:

Ep1 00:00-16:00

I paused and rewound and looked things up, trying to rely on sounds I was hearing rather than radical searching the subtitles. Though 錯乱 was difficult because I was hearing さくな so I had to turn to kankan for help.

Words like 迷宮 I will probably know very well my the time I finish the series. There was weird stuff like NG for No Good, and it was interesting to see which subtitles had furigana, like the second half of 呪文詠唱.

I’ve already watched this with English subs so I am never lost. Despite this, there were moments where I was thrown because I was expecting one phrase and instead another was used. Like right at the start, I was expecting お腹が空いた so when Laios instead used 腹が減った that was confusing. Actually I’m only just now noticing that’s the same kanji as I type it.

Also, some of the subtitles were vertical and that while it threw me at first, it wasn’t as much of a problem as it could have been. Also also, the only reason I understood any of what Senshi said was because the subtitles exist. He has a difficult voice.
