ゼノギアス // Week 6 & 7 (Double Week) // Chapter 12

Wow. I feel cheated, someone reimburses me two hours of my life now.

I reverted after taking the screenshot, I just wanted to flex my h4ck3r skillz.

When the game asks twice to confirm that you’re ready to go to bed, you know things are going to get spicy.

I did not expect the voice lines at the end of the fights, caught me off guard!

Fei rushing that guy attacking the kids and then spewing philosophical questions at him was very funny. “WTF I just want to murder children not tackle you existential crisis!”

I just boosted my mechas and kept spamming attacks to get rid of all the enemies. I was worried that I would run out of fuel because I didn’t upgrade beforehand, but it was fine.

I did not expect that Yggdrasil would become a vehicle we could control. Neat!

I couldn’t help thinking about our Trails discussion while exploring the ship. It’s big, it feels like a real place with real people but the game doesn’t sacrifice the large scale narrative to do this.

I think they must just mirror the sprite from the other side to save some texture memory.

Yeah I wonder what’s up with that, just a silly easter egg or are we going to meet more dolphin people later? “Day 228, they still haven’t figured out that I’m a sea mammal”.

I wonder if Weltall is not already one of these mythical gears? It’s supposedly special and unique.

I agree, my complains from week 3 are assuaged. I was worried that the game would then just go “meh let’s fight I guess” because it needed to happen for the story to continue, but instead we got the invasion thing which made the transition more reasonable and organic. He really didn’t have a choice but to fight to defend the pirates.

I wanted to pedantically correct you but I guess he also does like the colour red a lot so…

The butler’s dialogue required quite a few lookups for me… The rest was fine.

I forgot to check out Nisan, I did not expect the world-map-within-the-world-map! I’m not sure I understand why it’s done that way but it does look very cool. The music and design of the city is great too.

What the hell is this kanji after 詐 tho:

Script for NPCs in that place: https://xenodd.xxxxxxxx.jp/memory/npc07.html
So it’s simply 詐欺, weird that it got rendered so badly, did you put a +1 again somewhere?

Oooh, right, it’s offset, I see it now.

Damn it. I’ll have to check with a different emulator if it’s really my fault. That would be a fun one: one random kanji in one random convo that’s offset by 3 pixels.

Finished before I left (barely…) but just now getting around to typing up my notes haha.

There’s soooo much changing dialog it’s really cool. It reminds me if Trail in the Sky actually.

Like the tidbits in how annoying under sand travel is. Bedrock, water, static electricity, etc. Not necessary for the plot, but a cool little world fleshing detail.

Citan sound so disbelieving. シタン 「至宝の正体はギア…… ですか?▽

Mason did not hold back in spilling Bart’s tea. I guess all the people onboard already know, so it’d get out eventually but he sure was taken in by Citan complimenting Bart haha.

Lmao I bet the shippers had SO much fun with this entire scene.

In other news, Bart finally apologized properly and is off my shit list, and Citan’s sus rank dropped for being genuinely helpful and concerned for the NPCs. I still think he’s some kind of spy or handler especially given the “haven’t had a proper fight in five years” line, but maybe overall well-meaning.

Sorry guys, I forgot to send out the reminder when I posted the thread and jetted across country.

New week’s thread has been up! It’s a fairly light week (~7k and no battling) so hopefully this doesn’t mess anyone up too bad.

Finally catching up after a lengthy train ride gave me enough uninterrupted time.

Weeks 6 & 7

Like many others before, I’m in love with how both the Yggdrasil and the hideout is full of life. It really feels lived in in a way that I had kind of forgotten games can do. We’ve never had better engines for this stuff, but sadly this amount of detail is just not present in vast majority of modern games.

Those dumbbells, that shirt hanged to dry, that penguin plushie… all the work on the tapestry. The rails for those curtains. Even a normally very boring environment like the interior of a ship is suddenly interesting. One point for going slowly is taking in things like this slowly.

Front-view looks at each of our gears so far. The 3D artists of this age sensibly didn’t go overboard with detail due to lower resolutions, but sadly one such little shortcut becomes apparent with Heimdall in an upscaled picture: the leg is not actually attached to the pelvis.

Loved the scale in the hangar inside Yggdrasil, and loved how it got one-upped once more in the hideout.

All too common scene in Japanese games… and it’s not even the first one in this game. It took me a while to understand that these are so common because the developers were working day and night and barely saw their families during the long crunch periods. I’m guessing this was a way to console themselves?

Oof, the yearning in this one… LOL. 「お前の力が欲しいんだよ。」 has certain flavor for sure.

I liked that フェイ pushed back rather than just cheerfully joining the rescue plot right away – he is still just as confused about himself as he was when first meeting エリィ.

I guess the inevitable downside of playing a bit every week is that you lose a bit of the pacing. Things have been developing at a blistering speed in the story, but it doesn’t quite feel that way since it’s been weeks in real life. The hype from one week doesn’t so easily carry over to the next.

DuckStation also has this bug:

I guess @Daisoujou will have to confirm if it also happens on the real hardware or if Duckstation STOLE MY CODE (which I stole from mednafen).

I thought Stenzek was trying to compete with Mednafen on accuracy, can’t do that if you’re just copying the implementation. But very curious that multiple emulators have the exact same bug here. You’d think you’d see this time and time again, not a single kanji in a single NPC convo…

Hmm, does the script have this same kanji somewhere else in the game? I think they still used bitmapped custom fonts from a single texture atlas back then.

There’s a decent chance that it’s actually a bug in the game IMO. A texture not generated correctly or something like that. When we return there I’ll investigate more. I noticed that the game seems to load character textures on the fly instead of having a big character map, so it’s not as straightforward as dumping the VRAM and looking for the bitmap.

Oh no, don’t say stuff like this, hits too hard

Week 6&7

Slowly catching up! I went around and explored the ship a fair bit but still must have missed something because I completely missed that broken item that costs 38k. I wouldn’t have bought it anyway, mostly because I’m already finding our good bro Bart broken as it is.
I used Wild Smile two times against the boss and he landed maybe one attack the whole fight, lmao.
So happy that Citan joins the party with his own gear! He’s also quite broken, one heavy attack of his hits as hard as one of Fei’s deathblows…
Lots of interesting plot developments, I also really liked the music during Bart and Fei’s talk and his monologue… The world map theme after some weeks of catching up also hit me quite hard, it’s already become almost nostalgic…
And we get our first vehicle!
Will catch up more in the following days.
Dialogue gave me some trouble but I mostly got the gist of what everyone was saying…

The item wasn’t in the ship! see the tips in the first post, in case you want to know more
