Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Sakuma and the street brawl

I was very confused reading this section to start with, because I thought it was Sakuma who got into a fight with someone who he bumped into. It made more sense once I figured out that wasn’t right.

Although I can more or less work out what this means, is anyone able to break down this phrase?

謹慎処分で気がムシャクシャしているところへ、パチンコはまるで出ない。他の連中が羽振りをきかせているのを見て頭に来たのだろう

Maybe it’s because I’m rushing a bit more, but I feel like I’m having a harder time with this book the more I read it. That’s the opposite of my experience with most other books that seem to get easier or at least stay the same difficulty for me as I read them.

I had some similar actor confusion in the discussion between Izumi and her aunt. There was one line of dialogue from Izumi about needing the boss’s permission to be there that I first misread as being from her aunt, so for a few lines more I had a vision of a familial power struggle incoming before it became clear that interpretation wasn’t fitting with the conversation and I had to go correct my mental image of who said that.

Lots of new characters and events upcoming and even more questions arising:

  • will Izumi have some more issues with her aunt?
  • is this 円谷 really responsible for killing Izumi’s father and if yes was it really just an accident in the airport?
  • why is 浜口 suddenly inviting Izumi for a dinner?

I loved the bit where Izumi suddenly switches voice and showed her aunt the implications of marching into a Yakuza stronghold

I agree there are now multiple competing versions of the ‘accident’. I’m inclined to think that 円谷 is telling the truth. In which case those who have been suspicious of 黒木 may have been right all along. (My own theory is that the parcel is not drugs, but maybe an industrial secret).

I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you (sorry, couldn’t help myself). I do know from reading ahead a week, but I’m not telling!

Yeah, I thought this part was unnecessarily short on explicit subjects. There’s also a singular/plural ambiguity – you don’t know it was more than one person that bumped into them until the next page when it says four people…

Glad I’m not the only one who found the street brawl scene challenging. For most of that scene, I just couldn’t get a mental picture of what was going on and I had to look up so much stuff it didn’t really feel like reading anymore.

Did I understand correctly that Izumi is getting a new Mayumi roommate? If so, we’ll see how long this one is going to last, I guess.
