Spoilers for both Chapters
The 絆 chapter was really, really sweet. I love seeing the group come together. No real plan yet besides, “Don’t mess up,” but at least it’s a start.
The final panel of Chapter 102 was really heart-breaking, though. Her face when she realizes that they don’t really remember her (for reasons I’m sure we will come to find out – clearly, while she was in the village, she wasn’t part of the school, which is why she was so ill-prepared for everything, but I’m curious to find out exactly why that is. It’s getting harder not to read ahead. There’s a good chance I won’t be able to resist. ) definitely got me a bit.
Yeah, that ending was a real cliffhanger, oh boy

Story comments
So Emilico only got caught up in the Shadow House business because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time Not that the place she was at was great either.
And “Kate” isn’t even her real name! I wonder whose name she borrowed?
Also, they are actually talking about their ages now. Man, the crew is super young.
You all are at such a great point in the series. I absolutely love volumes 9 and 10.
Comments
Ohh so this is where the tightrope experience comes from (and the not being so good part as well)
That’s rough
It makes sense that they wouldn’t remember her and she wouldn’t remember her name since they are such small memories in comparison to their own names and knowing each other
Comments
Yeah, that part where she mentioned that they just called her by whatever occupation they had her doing broke my heart a bit. Gave me serious, “A Child Called It” flashbacks.
Just finished volume 8, almost there!

Chapter 106
For some reason, this one thing seemed to stand out to me repeatedly throughout the series.
I always figured it’s because Emiriko’s given a more “cartoonish” look and Kate a more “realistic” outline.
But it still seemed somehow like their faces didn’t quite match up, and the nose seemed to be more apparent to me.
Of course, we also get a comparison later in the chapter:
It’s nice to see a familiar face(?) from chapter 10:
It adds a lot of perspective to the chapter and makes me wonder how much the mangaka planned out from the start.
You are so observant. I never notice things like that, let alone remember them after so much time.
I read one week ahead again But the below comments are just for the end of Volume 9.
Story comments
I didn’t expect them to actually acknowledge that Emilico inadvertently got dragged into this Shadow House business by the other kids. Emilico’s reaction was very expected though. She’s such a sweet kid.
Oh, her doll! I completely forgot about that. Nice catch! And yeah, those scenes do seem to be emphasizing the difference in their noses. I also commented before how the explanation of how the morphs become shadows was kind of weird, given that Kate seemed to already have a personality from the beginning. I guess now we know why!
What’s funny is that Kate ended up taking her name back after Emilico borrowed it to add herself to the list of kids being evaluated.
Story comments
At least now she can cut herself some slack for back in volume 5:
Wow! It really is amazing the details you remember.
I think a big part of it is trying to piece together all the odds and ends that come up.
Examples of questions that have recently been answered or can be assumed.
- How is it Kate could read when Emiriko couldn’t?
- This question came up after the revelation of Emiriko being human, with the assumption Kate was based on her.
- We now can also figure as to why Emiriko couldn’t read to begin with.
- Why was Kate’s one doll so important to her, whereas she didn’t care about the human-looking one that Emiriko broke?
- Why could a human-cursed-to-have-no-face have a “shadow person” doll?
- Obviously, that question became modified as the morphs were introduced to readers.
- Why could a human-cursed-to-have-no-face have a “shadow person” doll?
- How did Kate know so much about morphs, and living dolls being human, and where the humans come from?
- I’ve constantly been meaning to ask in one of the threads whether that was explained and I glossed over it when reading it or if it still remained a mystery. We can now figure on that as well.
- Now I wonder how much Kate knew in chapter one. I believe it’s been said that the “special coffee” doesn’t affect the shadows, but when John read Kate’s letter and endeavored to break Shon of the brainwashing, John himself almost fell back into brainwashing.
- Before the outdoor maze event, there’s an indoor portion where Kate drinks tea rather than coffee. Is there any significance to this?
- If Emiriko didn’t know how to read/write, how did she manage to be able to write “Kate” on the registration list?
- This one was covered fairly soon after. Since she had Kate’s outfit with her, she could have looked at the name again to copy it down.
Special coffee
I remember that it is explained something like this: special coffee affects humans and, humans’ thoughts and believes affect their shadows. Shadows are indirectly affected and controlled this way.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
If that’s the case, that would explain why Kate hasn’t shown a similar influence being on her.
Examples of some of my outstanding questions.
- Why did Edward single out Kate as someone he wanted to lose in the garden maze? He didn’t know about her power, but had an issue with her.
- Had Kate been to the Shadows House before?
- Did she sneak onto a train alongside the abducted children and fake being Emiriko’s morph?
- If Kate hadn’t been to Shadows House before, is Edward familiar with her from Mirror House?
- Is there any relation between the town of Mirrorside and Mirror House?
- Do the shadows of Mirror House disapprove of Shadows House taking children from Mirrorside?
- Was there an explanation why getting a wound on the face is an issue?
- Does it impact unification?
- If so, why not wounds elsewhere, such as seen on Mia’s back?
- Name questions:
- Why is Mia’s name so different from Sara’s?
- Why did Kate choose the name “Emiriko”?
Face injuries
It may simply be as vain as not wanting someone who is not conventionally attractive due to a face injury be part of the family. But at this point, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were some deeper meaning as well!
