Difficulty level thoughts: BBC level. Japanese reviewers suggest it’s the right level for a 3rd grader but too easy for a 6th grader.

The book doesn’t have page numbers, but scenes (circled number at top of page). To help people orient and avoid spoilers, put comments under the scene name.

If you’re joining the party exploring this book, we are going to read in “Stages”, which is a collection of scenes up to the next decision point, i.e., Stage (A, B, C, etc). We are aiming to take up to 2 weeks on Stage A, and up to 1 week per stage from Stage B onwards.

:world_map: Not getting lost! :world_map:

Original instructions for the club participation

Anyone can join - here’s how! Set this thread to “watching” so that you receive alerts!

If you’re joining the party, we can expect among members there will be injuries (ill health) and detours (holidays and life overwhelm) along the way. To keep it fun, moving forward, and to keep that from putting anyone off committing to joining the group, here is how we handle this.

At the start of each stage there is a poll to join, these are recorded in the next section. We’ll wait at least a week for everyone to join and vote at each decision point. But if life happens and we don’t see you, we’ll move on and hope you catch up! On the other hand, if everyone makes it early, we’ll move on right away to keep it moving as a lot of stages are short. Here are the steps:

  1. Stage start poll: mark yourself reading along (links in next section)
  2. Read on from the chosen scene until you reach the next decision point or a ゲームオーバー. If it’s a ゲームオーバー, then go back to the previous decision point and follow the other branch. If it’s a decision point, go to the next step.
  3. Next decision point poll: vote in the poll. Mitrac tries to create them right away but feel free to create it if you are there first!
  4. Stage finish: the earlier of either a) everyone in the active party has voted or b) a week has gone by.
  5. We declare the winning route and move on to the next stage!
  6. All decision points will be recorded in the Party Guide below.

All decision poll links will go here for party members and anyone brave enough to try to catch up.

:airplane: Polls :airplane:

This is your flight attendant speaking, our captain Mitrac has let us know that we're cleared for departure. Apologies for the delay, folks, it appears there was a herd of gazelles on the runway. Please stow laptops and small electronic devices, and make sure your tray tables are in the upright and locked position.

  • I’m ready for departure, hope there’s no turbulence! (reading along!)
  • I’m in the air traffic control tower (just watching!)
  • My taxi was delayed, I’ll be on the next flight! (joining soon!)
  • Get me off this plane!

We've reached cruising altitude above beautiful Tanzania and captain Mitrac has turned off the fasten seatbelts sign, so the beverage service will begin shortly. Feel free to select a refreshment option below.

  • Soda
  • Juice
  • Water with ice
  • Bag of Pretzels
  • Vacation Juice (not for minors)

I’ll post the decision soon but usually the first decision stays open for 2 weeks (unless everyone finishes reading) because of all the extra info pages at the beginning.

I have been overthinking my drink choices. I wanted some vacation juice but thought about it and I feel like it may be dehydrating. In fact, maybe all of the choices are except for the water. Plus it’s the only one that comes with ice.

Ice water it is! :ice:

The drink choice is the first decision that comes with consequences… I’m going with the snack, because who knows where we’ll find food in the savanna.

wait a min… there are consequences from an innocent poll? :scream:

Welcome to Stage A of :sheaf_of_rice: :zebra: サバンナを脱出せよ - Escape from the Wide-Open Savannah

This is your flight attendant speaking. I do apologize for the turbulence, barrel rolls, and small explosions. In a freak accident, possibly involving the imbibing of vacation juice while piloting an aircraft, Captain Mitrac was ejected from the plane. Luckily, she was wearing her parachute and appears to have landed safely. It's a good thing your plucky flight attendant Soggyboy was on board, as I was able to seize the controls and land us with minimal loss of life and limb. Now for the bad news. We've crashed in the middle of the savannah with nothing around for miles but stampeding elephants, and the plane is a total goner. Please proceed to the nearest emergency exits located at the front and rear of the plane, and... good luck out there!

Read scenes :one:-:four: until you reach the decision point!

Participation

Stage is open until all votes are in or until April 18th

Your briefing

As the first section is longer than the rest, we’ll allow a max of 2 weeks for reading. If everyone finishes early, we’ll move on. If you plan on voting for what story decision we make as a club please select “I’m joining live.” Note that the second option is not for slower readers, but to signal you might miss the decision voting and don’t mind the group moving on without you.

If this is your first time joining an adventure, click “I’m joining live,” read the scenes before the deadline, and as soon as you’ve read them, vote in the Stage A decision point poll. If you’re unsure about anything just summon your flight attendant or any of our other frequent travellers!

Are you joining Stage A?
  • I’m joining live, reading along - see you at the decision point!
  • I will catch up later - don’t wait for me
  • I’m exploring solo - don’t wait for me
  • I’m watching :eyes:

Worked my way through the 注意!

注意

I’m level 17 on WK. Here’s vocab I needed help with…

Word Reading Meaning
内容 ないよう contents
特殊 とくしゅ special, particular
状況 じょうきょう situation
知識 ちしき knowledge
実行する じっこうする to carry out, execute
気をつける きをつける to be careful
つきそう つきそう to accompany
専門家 せんもんか expert
理想的 りそうてき ideal
信頼する しんらいする to trust
たずねる たずねる to inquire

Some grammar points I had to learn/re-remember…

場合は

[situation] + 場合は = “in the case that…” More formal than とき, common in written warnings

ことがあれば

わからないこと → “things that [you] don’t understand” があれば — “if there are”

Formal vs spoken vocabulary

Formal/Written Spoken
たずねる 聞く
場合は とき
ことがあれば だったら/たら

My initial translations needed a little work. に was throwing me off in a sentence with まらう and 教えて. I mean from context it was obvious that they’re not asking me to teach the expert, but I still fall down a lot reading these sentences.

The first sentence maybe was the hardest for me?

この本に書かれている内容は、特殊な状況を想定したサバイバル知識です。

First attempt…

The contents of this book assumes survival knowledge of a special situation.

… but unhappy with that, and looking at the は/です structure I changed it to….

The contents within the book are special-situation-assumed survival knowledge.

I don’t know if this over-use of hyphens is right, but it’s kind of the mental model I’ve been using lately.

My second sentence was definitely awkward

As for executed plans, not dangerous or being careful, please do the favor of bringing along an adult.

I mean, obviously not right, but not too far off. It’s frustrating to never quite get it. I don’t know if 「危険がないか気をつけ」is a set phrase (“be careful whether there is no danger”) or if I just don’t get the grama, but I don’t know what that か is doing. I assumed it was an “or”.

… Anyway, that’s enough about that.

Hi everyone! I’m so excited to be traveling with you for the first time! I decided to go for the pretzels on the plane, but now that we’re on the ground I’m kind of wishing I’d taken the vacation juice. :joy:

scene 1

So … wait … they just drove away without us?? Whatever adult was in charge just forgot to do a head count and left behind an entire child/internet adventure group hivemind?! … … Somehow I sense that this child has really. bad. luck.

grammar

I like to think of this use of か like a mini question mark. “Be sure to watch out - if / is there danger(?)” Does that make sense? (I haven’t tried to share this particular mnemonic with anyone before, so please do say if I haven’t explained it well.)

Grammar

The か is an embedded question particle.

I think of it like this: 危険がないか? 気をつけ

Whether or not there is danger? Be careful / watch out.

Or more naturally: Be careful of potential danger.
