キノの旅 Week 4 Discussion

No problem! It's a relevant grammar point! :)

From my own Tobira notes it says: Interjection is used to draw the hearer’s attention to something.
I don’t believe it’s both from your own sentence it has the physical:
ほら、これ、見て、リリーが子犬の時の写真。かわいいねえ。

Yes exactly as your edit says. First you get their attention towards something you want them to focus on.

Obviously in real life that usually means them turning and facing whatever you want them to see if it’s physical but in a conversation it’s like “Pay attention to what I’m about to say” kind of thing.

I just want to say that I’m alive and intend to catch up, life is just being life right now. Sorryyyy :frowning:

Just finished this week chapter.
I enjoyed this one, first half made me thought the tone was very serious, but when the guy started his explanations it quickly become goofier and goofier, quite fun to read !

I had a few questions but they were already answer earlier in the thread :ok_hand:

It reminded me of this:

Jail is the solution ha ha

I’m only like 6 pages into this week’s reading but it sure changed pace. It went really dark really fast and then just turned out kind of absurd. I can almost see the judgement in all those「…」.
There was a lot of vocab I didn’t know so it was kinda tough to get through but I’m finding it interesting so that’s good. There was a huge block of text in page 68 that had me a bit intimidated at first.
I still kinda need some guidance with this longish sentence:

自分達だけよければそれでいいなんて傲慢な考えを、我々は当然許すわけにはいかない。Specially the よければそれでいいなんて bit. I think i get what they are trying to convey but those long grammar strings get me every time.

自分達だけよければそれでいい = As long as oneself is fine, it’s all good

The above + なんて (with the such as… meaning) modifies 傲慢な考え = arrogant thinking

The last part is pretty straight-forward. 我々は当然許すわけにはいかない = Of course we can’t allow it

Putting everything together in anime-sub-level English: He says they can’t allow such arrogant thinking, like “as long as we’re fine it’s fine” (essentially people who only think of themselves), to exist.

Oof. That’s a lot of spoilers.

Nice, I had basically gotten that meaning but I wasn’t sure about the structure at all. It all seems so clear after the explanation :relaxed:

page 72-3

中折れ式のフレームにシリンダー並列した、十六連発リヴォるバーだった。

I got that it’s a 16 shot revolver, but I have no what “nakaoreshiki” and stuff is trying to tell me about the gun. It sounds undependable in bed, though.

But really, is it sawed off? Or is it referring to how revolvers have that cylinder than opens out the side to load?

I’m guessing it refers to this kind:

Ooooooh. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

Read up until page 71 today. Another creepy dude asking キノ to stay and getting utterly rejected… is this going to be a thing?

Isn’t that just an accurate depiction of being a woman

I didn’t want to say it but… :joy:

But… it’s never mentioned that Kino is a woman so far. Considering the use of 僕, I think most readers (who haven’t been spoiled it so far) would assume that Kino is a he. I also wonder how apparent it is to the other protagonists of the story.

because I’m so far behind, I have no idea.
I was just making a joke though. I think the book has sort of said that Kino looks like a boy, and I think these people are just lonely and want any company.
Though Hermes did seem to hint at Kino’s gender.
And hey, ボク has a different feel than 僕

Yes, I understood it was a joke, but it got me worried that I had missed something  I don’t think it has been “revealed” yet. <robot lawyer rant>Hermes did think that one guy in the previous chapter fell for Kino. While we could deduce Kino’s gender if (1) Hermes is serious, (2) Kino’s gender was clear to said guy and (3) we are in an hetero-normative context, it’s hard to prove all hypothesis hold with just the informations we had <\robot lawyer rant> #nofunallowed

let’s be real, we’re always in a heteronormative context
