り - ri or li? I could have sworn this used to work

In the last week I’ve started to mistype every word that has り in it. I’m pretty sure I could type li (letter L + letter I) and it would produce り, but now I get a tiny ぃ.

I can’t be the only one who says りんご with a rolled L, rather than the drummer from the Beatles.

It’s supposed to be a rolled R not a rolled L though, although I reckon it can sound similar for those who are natives to a language without rolled R’s.

WaniKani changed how the IME works recently and some letter combinations do different things now.

The built-in IME had some quirks that made it different from major IMEs and they changed those to bring it more in line with what people are used to on those other platforms.

As for actual pronunciation, the らりるれろ sounds are not an English L or an English R, but somewhere between.

What’s a rolled L? I know about the rolled R from Spanish, but I’ve never heard of a rolled L before.

It’s impossible! I’m trying!

Maybe it’s like when you put your fingers in your ears and go “LA LA LA LA LA”

Maybe something between like lr lr lr :joy:
