よつばと! Vol 13 Discussion Thread (Yotsuba&! Reading Club)

You are nothing short of a genius Belthazar! Thank you!

I really like Fuuka’s T-shirts! Ah, poor Fuuka.

Panel 2

Fuuka: 公園てそうこでしょ? むくのき公園
公園 - park
て - this is my problem. Is this the “if… then…” meaning?
そこ - there
でしょ? - right?
むくのき公園 - Mukunoki Park - ? Name of the park?

“If it’s the park (you want), it’s just there, isn’t it? Mukunoki Park”

Panel 4

Yotsuba: あっちのがすいどうがちかい
Is she saying あっちのが水道が近い…? “Over there, there’s a tap nearby”

Yotsuba: えなもぞうのこうえんのすながいいっていってた
えなも像の公園の砂がいいって言ってた

I’m wondering about the 言ってた
Should it be…
“Ena also said that the sand in the elephant park is good”
or
“Ena was also saying that the sand in the elephant park is good”

I suspect is doesn’t much matter, but the first is probably better. Am I right?

Final panel

Fuuka: 待たんかコラ!
I know she’s shouting “hey, wait”, but what is that たんか there?

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Third panel, little girl speaking:

すなばする? わたしきょうすなばのどうぐもってこなかった

砂場する? 私, 今日砂場の道具持ってこなかった

“[are you] playing in the sandpit? Today I didn’t bring [my] sandpit tools”

No questions here… worked it out by typing it out! :+1:

All your translations look good to me.

One kanji correction: it should be 象 (elephant) rather than 像 (statue).

Regarding 言ってた, it would be “said”. Further reading: The Differences between いった and いって(い)た (Scroll down for text. I didn’t watch the video.)

For 待たんか, I took it like this: 待たん is the negative of 待つ, and か turns it into a question. “Not waiting, huh? コラ!”

I kinda wonder if that’s って with the っ casually omitted. Like, “By “park”, you mean the one there, right? Mukunoki Park?”

の here represents 公園. And すなば from the previous panel is still the topic. So, “The sandpit at the park over there has a tap nearby”

Well, some of those pages in the middle were pretty straightforward to read.

At last, we see the legendary jellyfish!

Page 36 - can anyone tell me the kanji in the handwritten text in the second panel?
ちょっとkanjiしたけど (looks to me like radical “fault” + see + stool)

Page 37 - Yotsuba jumps and says かった, any ideas which very she’s using there?

Second one is shellfish+winter. 失敗

So Yotsuba is in a rage and calls Fuuka stupid. Fuuka pinches her cheeks and says something like “‘Stupid’ is it? This mouth is the one that says ‘stupid’ is it?”

Then Yotsuba replies with: いてて いてない! ちがう うそ
Is she saying “Painful! No, not painful! It doesn’t hurt at all”
Or have I got it all wrong?

Also, what is that むぎゅー in the handwritten text between them?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

  • いてて = ouch
  • いてない = 言ってない

This should help out a bit.

Edit: Forgot to mention, むぎゅー is the sound of cheeks being pulled. Find a neighbor kid and try it!

とうさんする - is this 倒産する?

I hope so, that’s funny!

Thank you so much! That certainly does help! Thank you!

There’s a sound for cheeks being pulled! That is brilliant! Thanks so much again!

It is indeed.

(Yotsuba’s stern face looks quite formidable there.)

I’m not going to make it to the end of the chapter today, my back is killing me sitting over the computer! But one last question before I go, if I may?

Page 46, second panel, Yotsuba says:

あなた これはなんというものかしら?

あなた - you
これは - this + topic particle
なん - what
と - quotation particle
いう - said
もの - thing
かしら? - I wonder

“I wonder, what did you say this one is?”

Is that right? And thanks again Christopher for your help this morning!

Very close, but rather than past tense (“what did you say”), it’s present (“what do you call”).

Oh yes! I see that now! Thank you so much again! :+1:
