I read in my browser because it’s easier for me to see the characters (I have a huge screen), maybe someone else can help with tips on that? @soggyboy
I don’t know about the answer to the other questions either because I only use bookwalker / buy physical manga. If it’s one of the book above, it’s most likely legit, I’d imagine. But I’m not sure about the difference.
Looks to me like bookwalker has some app - I just feel like once I choose now, I will want to stick with the same place to buy future manga, so want to make the right choices
Bookwalker has an app on iOS that I use to read on my iPad sometimes. Otherwise I just read it in the browser.
Note for the iOS app that the storefront will be tied to your location so you’ll only see the worldwide/english market on the app. It’s easier to buy the books on the browser in the Japanese marketplace and then read them in the app.
Just got email that my physical copy has arrived in the US (sooner than projected), so will definitely arrive in time for the club. A little too excited.
I decided to treat myself with the physical copy for my first Japanese book when found used copy that wasn’t exorbitant and had free shipping. I’m super happy because I was planning on doing Bookwalker, but it seemed to make sense to get several things; just felt too early in this journey to wade through that. (Also, I generally hate reading ebooks unless on my Kindle Paperwhite; regular screens mess with my concentration.)
Reading manga physically is nice because the art looks a lot better than a lot of the digital scans! Be careful though, it’s a slippery slope to buying way more manga than you have space for
Just a few more weeks until we start. If this will be your first native material and you haven’t started any prep, now’s the time to start.
This will be the one book club I don’t fall behind on. Back in 2023–2024, I read and enjoyed another work by this mangaka, 「日々蝶々」, which followed the story of a girl who is essentially mute due to past trauma and a boy who can’t talk with girls.
Thanks! I assume I’m going to be in WAY over my head, but have started to add the vocab to Anki (and not adding anything else in meantime) so hopefully that’ll give me a little bit of mooring going in.
Yeah… that’s terrifying because I was already trying to figure out where I could stick another bookshelf; my Japanese is currently sitting in a tote bag.
Luckily the scan quality on this one isn’t too terrible. Sometimes digital versions aren’t even legible, but this one has large text and decent resolution so it should be fine if you want to go that route.
There’s a range of quality by series. As far as I’ve seen it doesn’t matter which digital storefront you buy from–each volume really only has one digital version that’s the same across all the sites.
ゆびさきと恋々’s quality is about in the middle, which is passable. Some series are a bit more HD, which is nice. Though there are plenty at a rather low quality you have to watch out for. Those low resolutions make it quite difficult to read the tiny furigana, which is especially frustrating for less experienced readers.
Physical versions have much clearer resolution, but then you have to put up with a small page size.
Good to know. I just tried to look if there was any online site that compiled some sort of ratings of visual legibility by series, but wasn’t getting anywhere.
