Vocabulary

Please read the guidelines on the first page before adding any words.

Live Readings

There is nothing currently set up but if anyone is interested feel free to mention and we can set something up in the Discord server.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions, someone else might be struggling with the same thing you are and its a great opportunity to help each other out!
  • Please mention the page number and book version (orig or bis) if you’re asking help on a specific section so people can find it easily.
  • You can search to see if someone has already asked your question!
  • Do join in with the conversation even just to share your thoughts on the current chapters.

Page Numbers
For the Bookwalker version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are 2 apart. If you subtract 2 from the eBook location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Proper Nouns

シロクマ Polar bear Main character, owner of the cafe
パンダ Panda Main character, lazy regular to the cafe

When I first read through I missed what was going on in the background of the third panel!

Just double-checking, isn’t this next week’s reading?

It’s from chapter 23 in bis so I think I’m in the right place?

Ahhh, I see how it is! It said page 148 on your post, and at the top it said this week’s final page is 143. But I imagine it’s on page 148 in the bis edition. Sorry for the confusion!

As for that specific panel… I was a bit confused about what they were saying, so I had a look in the original thread…

… turns out I asked the exact same question four years ago lmao

That’s funny! It is a tricky exchange, I think I had just glossed over it when I was reading. It was only when I was looking over the old thread that I came across the answers to your question and realised I hadn’t grasped this part. It was also in your question that I spotted the backstabbing that I’d missed in the background.

So thanks for asking the question five years ago!

thanks for linking, I came exactly to ask this since I saw the backstabbing but didn’t get the meaning of the text.

So do I get that right that panda wants to go to the 合コン and Handasan says no?

Is there any particular reason for this manga’s text to be written horizontally instead of vertically at usual?

I’m a bit confused by this exchange as well, I do think he says no (いいから) but pandakun seems to interpret him at him being polite because he wants them to come but didn’t want to bother them (遠慮しなくていいのに).

Although I don’t know the reason, I like to image the mangaka did that specifically to make it easier for Western translations.

(And then proceeded to fill the manga with nothing but puns that can’t be translated.)

Finally caught up, yay! I love the comments from the お客さん in the background in this chapter.

my take

Panda wants to go but he doesn’t ask in a way that makes it sound like he’s asking for his own benefit. He offers that the two pandas could come and liven things up (盛り上がる)

Handa politely declines and tells him to get back to work. Panda then tries again, but he still makes it sound like he’s offering selflessly rather than because he’s keen to go himself. “Please don’t hold back (I’d be more than happy to do this for you)”

I think Handa’s shouted response - してないッ!! - is him saying that’s he’s not holding back out of politeness (he really doesn’t want the pandas with him!)

Summary

that makes sense, thanks! I had the sense panda was trying to sell it to Handasan, but it felt a bit ambiguous, I guess exactly because as you said panda was being indirect.

Thanks! It was that part especially I wasn’t sure about

I think it’s not so much that it’s selfless, it’s that in pandakun’s mind being with a panda is an incredible privilege so of course the caretaker would want to be seen with them. Like when he tells him that the secret to be popular is to tell people that he’s a caretaker for pandas which honestly I thought was probably mildly good advice for once.
