Yeah, I’ve been a bit slow this month as well! I think maybe once this month’s challenge is over, I’ll postpone the next one a month or so, to give people time to catch up. Annnd it’ll give me plenty of time to compile the next list of books

That might be a good idea! Somehow, I just realized today there’s only about a week left of April :cold_sweat:

I’ve been a little slow this month too, work has ramped up a bit. I only expect to have about half the books done by the end of the month.

I was wondering if rather than having a postponement, we just get two months for L2? I’d like to have the list ready as soon as I’m able to start it.

Heyo! Quick question: have you done the Age 0 challenge as well? Finishing up this challenge, and then working your way through that challenge would probably keep you busy for the month of May :D. That’ll then give me time to put together the Age 2 (and maybe even the Age 3 list, which is quite extensive I think).

Let me know :D!

I like the one month postponement it will give me the chance to finish this month as well as try age 0.
I’m a bit stuck at the スジーズ set of stories, for some reason my comprehension went down drastically and I find that reading while not understanding what is going on is not as fun.

Yeah I found those books more challenging as well x__x

Oh, I finished up Age 0, which is why I’m slower on Age 1. I think I’ll be done with Age 1 mid-May if I don’t slip any further. It’s ok if we do take the month off–I have graded readers and other stuff, I just enjoyed the structure of ticking these off.

Having said that also, if the スジーズ represent a jump in difficulty I might slow down (I’m just about to start them.)

Wow can’t belive I’ve done worse this month than last! Oh well - I’m still going to do it when I get back into routine. Thanks again @nbeck0212 for organising this - you’re a legend!

Thanks Amanda for your kind words! I didn’t finish within the month either xD.

So this post is mostly to let everyone know that we’ll extend this challenge until the end of May. If you finish before the end of May, feel free to do the Age 0 challenge (thread)!

Wahoooo :D! And thanks again for those who have joined the challenge with me - it’s motivating to have others along the journey!

Turns out there are only 46 books in grade 1 (122 - 76 = 46).

EDIT: they just changed the number of books in every grade again. Grade 0 now has 78 books (instead of 76). Grade 1 has 125 - 78 = 47 books.

Grade 2 has 97 books! Are we going to read them spread out over two months?

Since I finished grade 1, I’m just going to start with grade 2, reading one or two books per day.

Yeah I think we’ll have to do something like that! Grade 3 has even more than Grade 2, so definitely gonna have to spread them out :0!

Yep, I managed exactly half. Suzy’s Zoo: interestingly those seem to be English-language books that have been translated into Japanese so I wonder if that’s it, that the vocab/grammar is just more difficult because it’s a translation. I’ll finish up the rest this month!

I was wondering about those books, why didn’t they just give the characters new names? It’s really awkward to read ウィッツィー or ブーフ.

Don’t you think that the subdivision into grade 0, 1, 2, etc. is a bit arbitrary? There was this shinkansen book in grade 0 that had so much text I couldn’t finish it in 15 minutes. And now in grade 2 there are books that barely has any text at all.

You’re so ahead of the curve, already in Age 2! :scream:

But yeah I think it’s pretty arbitrary. From what I can tell, the age categorization is based on self-reporting by those who purchase the books. @gojarappe and I talked about re-organizing the books, but that could make it challenging to determine when new books are added to the site. Could be an interesting project though!

I try to make it a habit of reading at least one book per day. This is such a good resource for me because they have many books, and they are all free

There are other book clubs here but they kinda require you to either buy the book from Amazon.jp (pain in the お尻) or download an illegal copy. This is the only book club so far where you can legally read books for free (as long as you finish in 15 minutes per book, which is quite generous).

That’s a great habit! I was doing really well with keeping up the habit as well, but life has gotten in the way a bit. I’ll definitely be ready for Age 2 by next month though, for sure.

Glad you’re enjoying it!!

Define “most”. Because I don’t think we’ve had a single book club book so far that’s written horizontally.

Edit: Wait, Shirokuma Cafe is written horizontally. Uh, I mean, aside from that.
