Given that I was not feeling my best, I think this went pretty well. I napped and slept when my body felt like it and I think that’s why I feel much better now (or maybe it’s the healing power of reading ). Next reading challenge, I hope that I can pull an all-nighter!
Regrets…
I totally forgot I was reading Mushishi! I should have read it as my last book to catch up with the club, but I only remembered it when I started typing this at my desk lol
Textractor, my mortal nemesis, decided to be a piece of garbage and wouldn’t let me text hook narcissu. I spent about a half hour working on that and then gave up and moved on to something else.
So! Starting at 5:30am local time, I will be reading something else by the same writer: 雨のマージナル
I don’t have jpdb stats for this one, but I think this is probably harder than narciussu so far and probably ~same length as 1st. So if that speed on an initial getting my feet wet test read says anything, I should be done with this fairly quickly.
Okey dokey I’m done! Managed to fit another two mini sessions in this morning before my 24hrs were up. Life isn’t super conducive to have mega reading marathons because of all the normal interruptions, but actually my brain still gets fried with reading Japanese anyway so it sort of works out ok for me to break it into smaller chunks.
I’m so impressed at the amount of hours some of you are putting in - it’s been a while since I’ve done anything like that even in English! Something to aspire to.
Satori - Kona’s Big Adventure 2 - 28 mins / 4 “chapters”/pages (digital)
しろくまカフェ - 15 mins / 7 pages (hard copy)
ギャルと恐竜 - Gal and Dino (digital) - 10 mins / 8 pages (sorry @shitsurei its too good not to read ahead to the next chapter haha)
Total: 2hr46 / 19 pages + 7.2k chars
Quick reflection: I can read a lot more than in the summer which was the first time I participated. Everything still feels really hard (and I still don’t have a lot of stamina), but I’m trying to remember that it’s because I’m reading harder things, incl a real life actual proper novel(even if its an easier one) rather than because I haven’t improved. It’s most obvious when I read something easy like Gal and Dino and can blast through a chapter with barely any lookups and just enjoy it. I still remember trying to join the ABBC for the first time many months ago and crashing out very quickly. No longer!
As always @taiyousea thank you for hosting! And those still reading: 頑張って!
That’s fair and valid. I guess I took it for granted since that’s how it’s been the previous readathons. Maybe there’s no system at all for the results table, perhaps just my 思い込み
I feel bad about not being able to estimate my video game character count. It’s an abridged version of the anime/manga, so I can’t use those chatpers/episodes as estimation either…
I am taking a breaker now. Unfortunately my brain is not cooperating today. After two hours I am still stuck on the same lightnovel page. I am still a bit sick from a cold, but I didn’t think it would affect me this much.
I laid done twenty minutes ago and switch to a Manga „悪役令嬢、俺„. It is easier to read and I managed to get through 11 pages at least.
I will have to go to work now, and continue reading in a couple hours. I hope, then I will be a bit more successful with my lightnovel.
Second update.
Time for the next break. Finished 掏摸 and the あとがき. Need to order my notes and thoughts and then post in the related thread.

Time for some relaxation and a break. Reading the updates on the forum and posting some myself. Will continue later in the day either with Slam Dunk or with 獣の奏者 depending on what I feel more at the moment.
At least 1 1/2h left to reach my goal of 5h read. I think I’ll easily manage that.
update: definitely! definitely harder! wow! this chapter we decided to do a time skip backwards to some ambiguously pre-modern shinto temple and talk a bunch about purification rituals and stuff
Speed slowed down a bit for that, but kinda hoping that was a one off thing
Time for a lil caffeine break though, first up is hot cocoa with some crushed peppermint
My main read for this challenge will be かがみの孤城! I would like to make a significant dent in the book but I’m not sure exactly what my reading speed is so I haven’t estimated anything yet. 50 pages? A HUNDRED pages?? Who knows! Other than that, I’ll be catching up to the children’s novel club with 図書室の怪談, and if I get too tired of Kagami by the end of the day I’ll switch to another children’s novel, 亡霊は夜歩く
Total: 103 pages of prose in 4 hours and 23 minutes
For かがみ my reading speed averages out to right around 3 minutes per page, which is 20 pages per hour. My children’s novel reading speed is almost exactly twice as fast at 1 and a half minutes per page, or 40 pages an hour! It’s funny how the novel/children’s novel delineation is so exact.
This year I didn’t actually feel that tired at the end of my time, I just neglected to manage my time during the day well enough to read more hours. So I think my goal for the next readathon will be to push my hours Maybe I should try one of those noon → noon overnight readathons with a sleep in the middle like I’ve seen several people do.
And if your numbers aren’t the same as mine, don’t worry! What matters the most is reading, at any speed I’ve definitely been there in the 30 minutes per page club before, as has everyone who’s tried to read Japanese, I think Looking forward to reading everyone’s updates for the last day, we got this!
It’s morning and I’ve dragged myself out of bed to meet the day!! Coffee is poured and blanket nest has been entered. I will be warming up my reading muscles by catching up to the Children’s Novel Club with 図書室の怪談, will return here when I’m done!
Phew.. I ended up reading for two and a half hours straight - I meant to take a break before then but got so absorbed in the story I forgot It’s time for a kitkat break and a coffee.
The total right now is 67 pages in 5 hours 30 minutes. I’ll try to get a bit more done after the break if my brain can still work.
One story read from 図書室の怪談, nice little taster to start the morning! I’m getting hungry already so I think I’ll eat a little breakfast and then get back to reading.
Yay, readathon time! I got my usual Sunday chores done this morning, so I’m all set for a day of nothing but reading! 2025-12-21T17:00:00Z→2025-12-22T17:00:00Z
I didn’t really get through much at all of the things in my end-of-year completion list in the last two weeks, so my initial post will serve as my goals post. Planning to start my reading with カードキャプターさくら, since I only have one chapter left to finish the volume. And starting my snacks with just a cup of plain black coffee - bit boring, but very necessary!
That’s incredible! I think I’ve probably done that in English before…but I’m not positive I’ve even managed that…
So I’m relatively late to kicking off this time compared to usually doing it on the first day of the weekend, but I had some last minute Christmas shopping to do.
This does mean I haven’t had a chance to follow everyone’s updates so far, but good job to everyone already finished and good luck to everyone starting or in progress!
As for me, I’m starting off by clearing out my in-progress manga, so シメジシーミュレション1 and ふたつのスピカ4.
