❄️ 2025 Winter Solstice 24-hour Readathon

:christmas_tree: mitrac’s home post :dizzy:

Yay, it’s that time of year again  The readathon makes the darkest day of the year so FUN!

For the readathons, I tend to decide what I’ll read on the day and usually attempt to push through to finish a book or catch up on book clubs, although once I had a fun exploratory foray into my first VN.

I’m tempted to spend the day exploring: reading Harta magazine and the day’s text for Aozora Advent. If I go for catchups - I could revive my participation in the history manga book club or 夏目友人帳 Vol 2 club. I could even (gasp) attempt to resuscitate my dnf’d paper copy of 夏目友人帳 Vol 1 and get another bingo in doing so. If I’m still barely hanging on to the Hakumei & Mikochi club I’ll probably read that :mushroom: Also, I’m feeling like I should read a bit from Frieren just because I have logged that in so many readathons it’s feeling like a tradition

Past readathons - summaries

My participation is generally pretty chill :

  • Summer 2024 - 1 hr 45 min read 62 pages from なぜ?どうして? 科学のお話2年生 - a science book for 2nd graders
  • Autumn 2024 - 60 min read: 7 pages from 都道府県のおはなし- an elementary school level book about Japanese prefectures and 2400 characters from 月の光, a VN
  • Winter 2024- 2 hours, 88 pages and 1000 characters from 2 manga (Frieren Vol 3 and Doraemon), Satori (Koibito), and a children’s book (Survival club)
  • Spring 2025 - 45 min of Doraemon (30 pages)
  • Summer 2025 - 2 hours 40 minutes, 53 pages from Frieren (Vol 5-6) and Zenitendo Vol 7
  • Autumn 2025 - 2 hours 10 minutes, 79 pages from Frieren (Vol 7) and 夏目友人帳 Vol 1

2025 Winter readathon :santa_claus: :wrapped_gift: results

I like looking through the past result summaries and seeing a snapshot of what I was reading at the time. So this time I’m getting into the idea of reading as much Harta as I have time for and then a smattering of most other things I’m reading right now.

Session 1:

  • 1 hr 30 min, 24 pages of キュリオシティ from ハルタ (#81)
  • 20 min 400 characters from sets 6-7 of KKLC-GRS (Kodansha Kanji learner’s course graded reader sets)
  • 10 min 400 charcters from set 7 of KKLC-GRS (sentences with recently learned kanji)

Session 2:

  • 16 min 5000 characters (extensively) reading ゴン狐 alongside a narration and anime

Session 3:

  • 50 minutes, 32 pages of 影と愛の挨拶 from ハルタ (#81)
  • 1 minute, 1 page of the Desert Survival club adventure :flexed_biceps: every little counts

Session 4:

  • 40 minutes, 26 pages of アビスアジュールの罪人 (Ch 4) from ハルタ (#81)
  • 35 minutes, 2000 characters of セロ弾きのゴーシュ (Aozora)

Total

I read a lot more this time than in previous challenges. The timing was pretty good to fit more and longer sessions in, and this time I alternated between more sources and I feel like that increased my stamina and enthusiasm to keep going.

Total: 4 hours 22 min - 83 pages and 7800 characters from 5 sources: :gem_stone: Harta 81, :books: KKLC-GRS sets 6-7, :fox: ゴン狐 (Aozora), :two_hump_camel: Desert Survival club, :violin: セロ弾きのゴーシュ (Aozora)
