Hello, I’m a little late to it today because of stuff like returning a book to the library and then being at the car shop for a couple hours. If I was smart I would have done those in an order that let me read while at the auto shop but I turned in my physical book and then my phone died so I was sitting there for a while and couldn’t do anything.
Anyway reading time. Started around 8:30 pm my time (not sure exactly how to do the time so it shows up for everyone but I’m east coast) and finished a good first session just now (around 11:00) of 36 pages in that time.
I read more of おチビがうちにやってきた book 3. This is mostly falling action now that the thing from last years readathon was resolved but it’s still cute character stuff. Chinatsu and Misaki are asleep while Souta and Sendou explain to Momoka that the Arita couple were fakes trying to kidnap Chinatsu. Misaki wakes up, Momoka apologizes for putting Chinatsu in danger and shows Misaki a baby album which includes diary pages from Chiaki (Chinatsu’s older sister) asking for a little sister. The family made a cradle with sunflowers because they thought that those looked happy and 元気. Misaki is happy that the family loved Chinatsu but is also sad that they died. When Chinatsu wakes up she wants to see the picture book too but cries asking where her family is and wants to see them. Momoka calms her down by singing a lullaby that counts her fingers. Chinatsu knows this song because her mother sang it to her. Misaki is worried that she can’t compete with real family in that way.
I want to read the next ~40 pages tomorrow and should be able to but even if I don’t I’ll get my results into the table tomorrow night. Always appreciate these events.

I paused my reading for a bit to avoid overheating my brain…and then chose to have a mango-peach italian ice for dessert, which ended up giving me brainfreeze instead. 
After I recovered I read for another 55 minutes and got through 74 pages in CardCaptor Sakura Vol. 4. I still have another 2 1/2 chapters to catch up to the book club, but that will be for tomorrow. Time for bed for me! Everyone enjoy your reading while I’m asleep!

Morning! My friend can’t make it today, so I’ve made some coffee and moved the baking to the afternoon to get a bit more reading done before my 24 hours are up.

Update 3:
Solid manga session. Decided to start off with ナナ first because I didn’t want to have to do something with more lookups, wanted something more casual and easier. Although ナナ is actually quite text-dense, it’s taking longer than I expected. It’s definitely not something super easy and quick, so I didn’t manage to finish it in one session. I think the anime was easier to follow than the manga is. Will probably go back to next novel now and then finish off ナナ/ start another manga later.

I have really been enjoying いのちの車窓から!!! It’s an essay type book, and the chapters I read today were kind of heavy topics/life events, but it was so good! I didn’t get to read as much as I wanted today 
but there’s still some of my 24 hour period tomorrow! See you guys in the morning〜

My readathon comes to an end! (I want my saturday back)
I read some Silent Witch and Witch Hat Atelier this morning. Last time, I didn’t read any novels because I was scared it would hold me back, but this time I read around 52 novel pages overall and I’ll take that as a smol win.

Japanese text staring done so hard that words are floating all over the pages now 
Hmm I think I kinda agree with your thoughts on this. I’ve completed the first chapter and it was… okay? Didn’t really make me feel anything. And I’m not sure if I feel that good about the writing. It’s too surface-level for me, and the writing falls flat. Most of the first chapter reads more like a thought experiment than a story.
I have a lot of thoughts just from chapter one, but even after reading around 40 pages, I can already tell how the rest of the book is going to go? And that’s personally a bummer for me. The sentimental approach is too on the nose, like here’s a man who’s going to die, and he’s getting all philosophical about it to make you feel things… and that’s exactly when I don’t feel things.
I probably sound wayyy too harsh (especially since I haven’t even gotten through half of it), and I’m hoping the story gets more fleshed out later (which, from your review, I’m guessing doesn’t really happen), but I’ll finish it anyway because it’s a good one for active studying and vocab retention.

Update 4:
Nice long session of 運転者. I don’t usually get much beyond 45 minutes of novel reading straight without a break, so 1hr 24 is very good going for 1 solid sessoin. This book is quite easy, quite quick. If I wanted to, I could probably finish the whole thing today… (kindle’s telling me about 3.5 hours for the remaining 140-odd pages) but I don’t think I will probably. Maybe, we’ll see.
Anyway, I’m basically halfway through to overall time goal, in about 6 hours since having started. So give it another 6 hours from now and hopefully I’ll be at about 8 hours. Anything past then will be extra, but I reckon I can push on a bit past then.
I’m not sure I like this book. Initially it was alright, but now it’s getting a bit worse and worse as it goes on…

Summary
Couldn’t agree more about it just being so transparent about what’s going to happen, and also the writing style just feeling a bit flat. Although I can both see how people like it but also why it’s very love or hate. The first chapter really sets the tone, if you like that you’ll like the rest, if you don’t, you won’t (imo). The middle part though did get a bit better for me because it stopped (temporarily) being quite so obvious about trying to force you to feel things, and focused more on giving backstory, and I think it was written much better.
The book I’m reading now is starting to remind me quite a lot of cat book (all-knowing mysterious guy appears and starts indirectly guiding all-over-the-place guy 2 how to live their life better) and I’m getting flashbacks. Not so sure about it…

Wow that was a lot of eye energy for one day - I gotta say I have serious props for anyone doing anywhere near this much time and some of you have gone well beyond. I’m super proud of everyone that took part! I see many users are comparing with their stats from last time, and mine feels hard to compare but I’ll try anyway. Despite an additional 3 hours of reading, I only managed an additional 35 pages, but I managed almost twice as many novel pages (and if I recall correctly these novel pages are much more dense than Kiki’s). Overall I’m pretty proud but my biggest takeaway from this is honestly the importance of chipping away every day and studying just a little bit. Reading 8 hours in one day for only 220 pages feels a bit like failure, but reading 200 pages in a week feels like a great success, despite only requiring an hour of effort. Despite this feeling, I still had a good time and will certainly be returning to a tiring day of reading next time around. These things always get me just close enough to the end of my novel to get the willpower to just blaze through the rest. Good luck to those who will be reading tomorrow!!!
Edit: added my results and looks like that put us over the time for the first goal!! A bit behind in pages and characters but keep it up everyone

READATHON GO!
First a little rant that google lied about the shop opening times, so I’m eating crisps and a fruit oat bar thingy as backup breakfast while reading the first thing.
First choice for reading is レンタルおにいちゃん. Easy, I love it, should be good to get me into this. Seems I’m ready for Ch 14. It’s so happy and wholesome and oh no she left the diary on the table お兄ちゃん is going to read it! 39 pages in 15m.
Next I read some 風のたてがみ. I already want to take a break from it. I got to Act 2 (so there are chapters) and I think I’ll alternate this with other stuff for a bit. 30p in 16m.
ささやくように恋を唄う Chapter 13 is next. 30p in 16m (I’m noticing a theme). Can’t quite figure out if whats-her-name is trying to sabotage or not, because it feels like she is, and then she does something that seems helpful, but are there hidden motives? I do not know.
Another chunk of 風のたてがみ. It says this is the end of 1 but there’s another 1/4 or so of book left and wasn’t this act 2? Oh well. 88p in 36m.

Starting the ABBC pick. They’re halfway through chapter 1, but I’m unlikely to stick to that pace and read the whole chapter instead. 60p in 20m.
Let’s finish this thing. 風のたてがみ, 43p in 22m. I am unsure what any of this had to do with the main story. But it’s done.
Next I read some しろくまカフェ with 39p in 34m. I’ve still another 50ish to go, but my brain’s tired so I’mma try having a nap for a bit.
I think ひとりぼっちの○○生活 only has a couple chapters left so I think I’ll aim to finish this too. I found it amusing how ぼっち’s original plan is multiple ways of just not having any classmates so that she can be friends with all 0 of them a much more achieveable number. 22p in 25m.
Back to しろくまカフェ. 16p in 13m but I need food!

I don’t feel good. I’m feeling guilty because I don’t feel good. I don’t know what is wrong with me. Part of it I think is noise. Having windows open for cooling down house is adding noise. I think I’ll go close them as I’d rather melt. I can have a lie down phone read of comfort next before back to trying to make progress on goals. Hunger should fix itself soon since I’ve just eaten lunch. If not, I’ll need to snack.
I read a chapter of アンリの靴 though I’m sad to say most the littler details went over my head. Mostly I was annoyed, you can’t return shoes that’ve been used for months even if the owner has tragically died. Probably wasn’t in the best headspace to get it. 26p in 15m.
しろくまカフェ, 28p, 25m
生き残った６人によると. I also do not want zombie puppies to be hurt. Dammit 雫 is a problem! Grr… Anyway. 26p in 19m.
Next on my list of goals is F落第生. Which, physical book! Oh my how fancy. 9p in 40m. I have finished the first of the short stories! I’m not too sure on what actually happened, especially towards the end where we get protagonist’s name for the first time and シュちゃん explains why her nickname is シュちゃん. Protagonist seems to have promised to pay for something シュちゃん couldn’t afford, but then couldn’t. No clue why a wedding dress was being talked about, nor whose it was. But I got a lot of like body language words and phrases through reading this story.
葬送のフリーレン, ch42 it seems is next. Stream of consciousness thoughts will take longer but eh I’m relatively certain I’ve reached my page goal already and this is Frieren dammit.
戦う理由 is a promising chapter title. We know Frieren’s reason, so maybe for the new characters.
Ack my brain is not with it, took me a minute to realise random guy is not their third party member. So, 77 is saying that because his party member is dead (thanks to Fern), they’ve already lost because they won’t meet the everyone together at sunset rule.

An unnecessary killing just returns to a necessary killing. Ah, combines with previous line. I don’t mind if you try to attack while my back is turned (but if you do that) me killing you just goes from unnecessary back to necessary.
Ah, Fern did not do a murder. Well, her bluff worked. She’s good at bluffing.

I am not putting a whole lot of effort into this. On the plus side, I know the events even if they are out of order compared to the anime. Like, Fuyou being introduced here in the middle of episode 2 equivalent.

Never actually finished the 光が死んだ夏 chapter after the dragonfly distraction. So, 14p in 9m.
Next is to attempt some Nana. I did 10 pages, which considering how dense they are is good, 16m ugh I’m not giving things their proper attention am I?
Right, in order to keep reading but also give my brain a break, I’m gonna not go any highter than the purple on natively and work my way back down to red. I’ve had a little peak at orange and green, and that’s enough.
Uh, green yuri w/ long title. Happy I finally recognised 退屈 without searching it. Yeah, that felt a lot more understandable. 37p in 26m.

I woke up at 06:20, and tried to squeeze in a little ドラえもん chapter while doing my getting up stuff. I reckon actual reading time probably 2/3 minutes? Because I read 5 pages of the chapter, and the rest after the 06:30 deadline. 10 minutes for those first 5 pages does not sound right, and I was multitasking. As for the chapter itself, this one seems to have been a continuation from a previous one, not that that’s in this collection.
Thoughts
So, I’m not happy that I didn’t reach my time goal, but I got all the others and when I consider how ugh I was feeling for most the day, reaching almost 8 hours is still a good achievement. Except, it came at a cost.
Not all the reading was anywhere near as thorough comprehension-wise as it should’ve been. The worst for this was Nana, looking back all I recall is thanks to childhood stuff, Nana refused to like red or pink or girly things even if she did like them (relatable, maybe why I remembered), and after the granny died she saved up money from her バイト to get a frilly red dress. There was also some stuff about a guy and rumours about him doing(?) something bad. But I realised there were too many moments I was just saying sounds and not actually understanding how they fit together.
I think I most enjoyed reading Frieren because I took the time to do my usual ramble notes and actually take a moment to process what I read. So much of the other stuff I was in such a mindset of “must read quickly must read more” that I didn’t have time to appreciate or feel emotions or anything. Though, I’m feeling kinda ugh still. Maybe if I’d tried to take that time I’d still have barely felt anything and all I’d have accomplised would be less reading.
Last Year Comparison
Because everyone else is doing it and I’m hoping it cheers me up a bit.
I got 100 pages in 4hr23 (across 10 sources but that’s a fun stat not an improvable one). My time isn’t quite double but the pages are a LOT more. If I do some maths, last year was average of a third of a page per minute and this year is a bit more than a page per minutes. So not only have the base numbers both increased, the reading speed has too.
Also, difficulty. I didn’t add natively links last year but looking at them the most difficult thing I read was Frieren. I also read Frieren yesterday! Last year was 65m for 14 pages and this year was 29m for 19 pages. Time is halved and for a few more pages. Other series where I read some today are しろくまカフェ (18m for 12p then vs 72m for 83p now) and レンタルおにいちゃん (15m for 16p then vs 15m for 39 pages now). Improvement!
I also read bits of difficult things now that I didn’t then. 薬屋 is most difficult according to Natively, but I’ve a HUGE advantage in having watched the anime several times that when the characters talk I actually understand who is saying what line and I know what kind of stuff to expect is happening, and that fills in a lot of the gaps. This year I read a chapter (18p) in just over an hour! Last year it seems I was barely managing a sentence or two at a time. Same with F落第生, and this year I read 9 pages in 40m. For me, this is more difficult than 薬屋 because not only do I have to decipher the text, I’ve also got to try and figure out wtf is going on. I’m hoping the next short story will make more sense as I’ll be able to read it quicker.
So, I have made MASSIVE improvements since last year.
I made the mistake of trying to compare with Spring’s as wekk and uh. 薬屋のひとりごと 20 58m oh look I was better at this then. Grr the difference is SMALL this is FINE. I am not looking at it.
Overall
My results are objectively good. My brain just subjectively thinks they're not good enough, and then I feel bad for not being appropriately happy with my good results. Oh fuck this. I was having a bad brain day and I *still* managed to read a ton! I usually give up on my bad days! This is loads of reading! Could I have read more if yesterday were a good day? Yes, but guess what, it wasn't a good day. So it doesn't matter what theoretically happy Reb could have done, because ugh Reb did plenty. What did I read last time I had an ugh day and didn't want to do anything? Nothing! Or, at best, 1 tiny page of little Lv12ish kids books. I have beaten that by 586 pages. Yay 😠
