I loved this idea but I kept missing the MoeWay readathons because they were always scheduled for Japan’s timezone/my middle-of-the-night There’s flexibility if you’d like to read on Thursday, instead, but no pressure to make it work. The next one will be in September for the autumnal equinox (which I think is a Sunday?), I hope we can read together then ^–^
I’ll have to make sure my schedule is clear for the next one!
I’ve been thinking more about what I want to try to read.
I think if I start with 海のそこ【電子限定描き下ろし漫画付き】 equal | L24?? I’ll have a good start and then I could continue with 気になってる人が男じゃなかった VOL.2 | L23. Idk if I’d have all that much if I finish both of those, but I’m thinking 葬送のフリーレン 1 | L26 next since I’ve watched the anime so even if the content isn’t so easy, I’ll around be familiar with it. If I make it through all of those, I think I’ll try to take on https://learnnatively.com/book/d79d46033f/ and とんがり帽子のアトリエ 1 | L26
Some social engagements came up for Friday, so I may need to be more modest in my estimation on how much I can read. Still hoping for close to a 100 pages though.
I’m assuming audiobooks don’t count?
Usually on Fridays and the weekend I read everything related to the various book clubs I participate in. Luckily I don’t have work this Friday so I’m going to attempt to tackle as many of my book club reads as possible.
Tentative list:
I’m looking to get into classical Japanese, so I started reading これで古典がよくわかる to get some background information. It’s not very difficult Japanese, but I have the attention span of a guppy these days, so I’m not making as much progress as I’d like. All that will change tomorrow!
I’m not feeling super productive so procrastinating with reading sounds like a great plan.
It’s officially Friday in Japan, wishing a happy start to the 24-hour Readathon for anyone in that timezone I’ve now opened up the Results post as a wiki - whenever the readathon day concludes for you, feel free to add and tally your numbers.
I’ve got my books at the ready and I’m excited to read alongside everyone! (in our imprecise, varied-timezone kind of way)
for the results wiki, should we only count a source as one thing? like, if i read 10k characters from a book in 2 hours, would I put “2 hours, 28 pages, 10k characters, 1 source” or just " x x 10k characters, 1 source"
I like this idea and while I have work on Friday, I can probably read some tonight, some that morning, and some on the Saturday. That way it’ll add up to about 24 hours? Goal would be finishing the third chibi book which I just started reading today. Bending the rules a bit but it’d be cool to read a book in “one day” instead of a week or two in Japanese.
Since it is a children’s book on book walker (big text with furigana) the page count would probably sound like more than I really read. Not sure how to get a character count for it since that’d be more accurate.
Had to get up early anyway and started the challenge! I first gave 冗談に殺す | L35 a try. It’s only 25 pages but pretty old so I was not sure what to expect. I managed to read 20% in 50 minutes, so I guess it’s doable to read it today? which would also count towards my Bingo
It is a really cruel story but the premise is super interesting and I already adore the author’s writing style. Kanji usage and spelling (?) are a bit old-fashioned, but it is ok so far. So let’s see how it turns out today!
You could look up the real page count on Amazon or the like, and then calculate from there (i.e. 1 BookWalker page = some percentage of a real page) and use that. At least that’s what I’m usually doing.
Happy solstice!
Midnight here means it’s time to check in and start reading. I ended up getting a lot more reading done before this challenge started than I anticipated, so I actually have less than 25k left already
T-16500 characters/4 chapters left in 怪人二十面相. Time to see if we can finish this before sleeping tonight and then smash out as much as I can ‘tomorrow’!
source
time for the final conflict between our 名探偵, 明智 吾郎 小五郎 and the great 怪盗二十面相. These 江戸川 乱歩 sherlock holmes inspired detective books became a big inspiration for persona 5, among many many other things. Reading through it has been delightful seeing all the connections to other series and tropes that I wouldn’t have even thought to look for an original source from
Well, it’s 12:01 a.m. and I’m not even close to tired, might as well start reading
I unexpectedly fell ill (though I really could have expected it) so idk how much reading I’ll be getting done. Starting now anyway with 北の砦にて.
Happy solstice and happy challenge, everyone!
The way things are shaping up today, it doesn’t look like I can do more reading than usual today after all - most probably it will be way less than usual. I’d like to take the pressure off myself, so I’ll probably not be participating after all, not this time. If by some miracle I do find some quality reading time, I’ll come back here to log what I did, but the odds are not in my favour.
Happy reading!
If you know both the page count and character count, you can absolutely add both. I mostly added “character count” as a goal for those reading VNs/novels on ttsu/anything without defined page numbers, just as an alternative method of tracking, but feel free to add whatever you happen to be keeping track of.
Oh my gosh, that’s incredibly fast Amazing job!!
No pressure, have a nice day out-and-about! Hope to see you for the next Readathon ^–^
Oh no Take care of yourself foremost! Reading can always come later.
This is fun reading with you all
I got in my morning session for today. I’m hoping to finish Science Stories for 2nd Graders and managed a third of what is left, so I’m on track. This will be fun to finish. It’s part of a collection of books I bought back when I was trying to start reading my first paper book (pre-Natively) and I was groping in the dark a bit for what I could read. It’s fun working my way through them and finding that what took painstaking deciphering back then is easy to read now.
30 min - 18 pages - 1800 characters - 1 source (I just do a character count on one normal looking page and then multiply it by number of pages read).
So I changed my vote from I might participate to I am Participating!
@Thubanshee hope whatever you have is over soon take care!
I gotta say, it feels really good that by the end of this I can read the narrator saying: 「読者諸君は、もうおわかりでしょう」and go “yes! もうおわかります!!” considering how slowly and painfully I was reading this at the beginning.
and we’re done! Just under 2 hours with a little break, but i’ll count 2. Both way faster to finish and way easier than I expected the end to be, considering how many various political and bureaucratic introductions today’s section started out with. I caught on to the trick about halfway through the explanation. It feels good to be able to pick up on the clue info, even if it is supposed to be pretty obvious clue info that kids can also pick up on
You have no idea how good it feels to finally finish this and get to close this, I’ve had this aozora tab open in my browser just staring at me for 2 months, and it’s finally done
That also knocks out my first bingo square in god knows how long: book you got for free
Now uh, I’m kind of at a loss for what to read next actually
Oh no! hope you feel better soon! It’s ok to take it easy, there will be more solstices with which to try to do funny challenges on if you need a rest day
Yay!
When I go to track my non-page count text stuff like newspaper articles and aozora, I’ve been doing character count/350 for my personal tracker just to keep everything consistent. That’s about what the counts in とらドラ were, and that feels like a pretty standard light novel density. By page count on natively, this book was about 440 characters per page, but since there’s some different editions I think i’ll go by character count just to stay consistent with my previous tracking
congrats !!!
come on, tell us what’s on your Natively wish list
For bingo stuff that I was considering:
- no reviews/ratings/gradings - 東方茨歌仙 ~Wild and Horned Hermit. - no gradings, but it’s definitely orange from when I did a test read before lol
- non-fiction - i have a japanese linguistics book that sounds fun
- higher level - いちご同盟 | L33
- debut work - コーヒーが冷めないうちに | L28
- added by you - 理系が恋に落ちたので証明してみた。 | L24?? (manga) no gradings, but also definitely orange
- non-human protagonist - 狼と香辛料 1 | L36 fresh in my mind since i’ve been watching the new anime
- longest on tbr pile - 蟲師 | L29
- bad cover - あせとせっけん 1 | L27
- finish a series - 3月のライオン 1 | L31 either that or do more 蟲師
all of those sound hard and a lot of work to start for a day challenge though
other stuff I’ve been slacking on:
- アオのハコ | L24 book club, i’m a bit behind and could just run through vol 7 pretty quick
- reading about chs 10-100 (where I started reading them on release online) of イジらないで、長瀞さん | L20 so I can mark off the whole series as read in jp
- stragler book club picks i didn’t finish like volume 3 of スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり 3 | L25, 気になってる人が男じゃなかった | L23, finish とんがり帽子, i haven’t even started frieren yet
nagatoro maybe not a bad idea, since the series is ending ending soon can just put a nice big check mark next to it and not need to think about it. I probably get to sleep on it at least, that’s probably plenty good for tonight’s session
