Yomi.ai - The love for reading

Can’t you just make a poll?
It’s going to be messy to scroll through everyone’s replies (and check that people didn’t answer twice).

Poll (let me know if you want me to remove it and make it yourself)

  • Japanese->Japanese
  • Japanese->English
  • Both

It’s Friday. That means here’s our Friday announcement.

We hope you are doing well.

We would like to acknowledge how lucky we are with such a nice user base. I use the term user base over community at this point because I am aware that no community features are built yet, nor do we have a ton of interaction among readers on our social media channels. Nonetheless, at Yomi.ai, we are getting a sense of community that we would like to pass on to all of our users soon. You are not alone in your journey to full Japanese literacy.

We have received a lot of great feedback over the past few weeks and we cannot stress enough how important your feedback is. Thank you!

Here’s our quick update on what we’ve been working on this past week.

The first change of the week wasn’t planned at all. But one reader requested a toggle between our standard dark-mode and a light mode. You’ll see the switch on the right-hand side of the navigation bar. The toggle does not persist between “hard” reloads. So if you feel like reading in light mode during the day and load the site on your mobile device during your nightly bathroom run, your eyes will not burst, because dark mode is the default.

The second change is a work in progress. Last week, we asked what type of dictionary you would want. We deployed an early version of the dictionary lookup, using a third party. It is not great, but can be good enough in the context of the text you are reading. We are continuing to work on this. We will also bring in a Japanese to Japanese dictionary into the site soon.

We are very excited to bring you video lessons, which we will start producing in the summer.
Resources for the reading comprehension assessment feature are allocated at the moment.

We will do further work around the discovery of readings next week. Today, we shipped a random reading feature, which can be accessed on the readings-page behind the “surprise me” button.

And finally, as a subscriber, you have access to the subscription center. You’ll find it in the navigation bar behind the three dots (where you can also sign out or change your password). Manage subscription allows you to change your payment method, see your past invoices, and even cancel your subscription (╥_╥).

Since there is no feature to mark your favorite readings just yet, what are you reading? Do you have a favorite quote? Please let us know.

Thank you for your continued support.

It’s a great site idea, thanks for sharing

Just a little feedback that’s more on the nit-picky side, I only really glanced at the site, but I feel like the home page could use some graphics or other visuals that aren’t just flat colors and text. Maybe showing off some fake book covers (maybe commission some artists for your more popular or famous titles?), more about what you offer, etc. Right now, the first impressions I get are bright banner colors and “give us money” everywhere, with no real visuals that give me anything for my eyes to focus on. (Just to note, the “give us money” wasn’t a jab, but I think it’s a bit of a mistake to have so much “start a trial” everywhere without more “what this site is” and “why you should” instead.) I think looking at other subscription service sites, even non-Japanese services, would be good inspiration.

Another little nit-pick is the reading list. All we get is the author and title name, but no indication of how long or difficult something is. I’m not sure if I need an account to see that information, but I think it would be a good idea to display that, even to potential customers. Even marking stuff as poem, short story, novella, novel, etc. would be helpful. I can’t seem to “sort by” anything either, but the search is nice.

Last nit-pick is being unable to use arrow keys to scroll when reading. The arrows at the top gave me that impression initially, and I realized that’d be a handy feature to have.

I think it’s off to a great start though and seems promising. I honestly think it’s mostly graphics and UI polish that will really make this thing look professional and enticing.

*Op, found another nit-pick: I closed the tab and reopened it, and it didn’t remember that I switched to light mode. Not sure if I need an account for it to remember my preferences or not, but just in case, figured I’d mention that.

In any case, best of luck with this project! I’m looking forward to seeing where you’ll take it from here.

Thank you for the feedback. It is much appreciated and I don’t see this as nit-picking.

Sort should work by author and/or title in ascending or descending lexicographical order. If you’re logged in, you can also sort by how much of the occurring kanji and kanji compounds in the texts you know or have yet to learn (either in total or in percentage). The later info is currently limited to the pages of specific authors, but will come for the overall readings soon. If you have a chance to check this again, this would be much appreciated.

Dark mode/light mode does not persist. See the reasoning behind this in my previous announcement.

I added a few keyboard controls:

  • right arrow → next paragraph
  • left arrow → previous paragraph
  • space → toggle furigana

Are there any other controls you would like to add?

For this week, I’m keeping it extremely short.

Completed new features

  • Arrow key navigation in reading mode
  • Space (on desktop) toggles furigana
  • Yomi.ai - Read real Japanese (linked on the homepage) selects a random reading for you

Hi reader,

Reading comprehension is essential to pass the JLPT. It is also a requirement for truly enjoying the language. Yomi.ai set out to become the undisputed number one resource for your reading needs. Today we took an enormous leap towards that goal.

Featuring our author of the month, Eiji Yoshikawa, we created quizzes for all of this renowned author’s readings on Yomi.ai. Here’s the link for a quiz for the very short title 辞典のすすめ.

We hope you try them out and tell us if these are of significant help in your language learning.

Your Yomi.ai team

I’m wondering whether I should continue posting in this thread or not. Lately, it’s been a monologue and I’m getting the impression that y’all are tired of me here

Anyway… The response to the quizzes is very positive for the most part. So we want to do more of them. Since I’m looking for an aggregate, it wouldn’t make much sense for me to post a separate poll here. So if you, dear wanikani community member, like the quizzes we’ve posted for Eiji Yoshikawa’s work, then I’d invite you to cast your vote here for determining the next batch of quizzes.

We added 43 more readings yesterday, bringing the readings count to 5,694 in total. Among these are titles like 坊っちゃん from our author of the month: 夏目 漱石. We also added 30 new n4-ish quizzes for 夢十夜.

Our recordings feature is live. We are still in the process of refining the feedback process on those recordings. We are also trying to get more native Japanese voices on the platform for better shadowing practice.

Lastly, all supporters should have received their coupon code within the last 15 hours via mail, email, or both.

There’s a story behind this video.
Might share it through our newsletter tomorrow or so.

I just added some color to make it easier to identify different parts of speech. They will be configurable later on and persist to local storage - if this feature sticks around. Ready to test on https://develop.yomi.ai by hitting the palette icon on any reading.

I also moved the API serving this site from Heroku to Google Cloud for better scalability. Most requests should be served much faster, too. Please let me know if you run into any issues.

こんにちは、

After 11 weeks, we’re finishing up our Japanese 101 course at Yomi.ai.
We were very fortunate in having a great and fun group with us who were eager to learn. We also learned quite a bit through our observations and the feedback we have received from our students.

Next Sunday, we will start our Genki I Course at 10 am Pacific Time. With the exception of the intro session, we are scheduled to complete one chapter of the book per two sessions. The course is part of the Yomi.ai+ subscription (which runs at $49/month).
