When lv. 60 is far from the end - a not so happy lv. 60 post?

I started Wanikani in 2018. After about 6 years I finally managed to get to level 60 a few months ago. In the beginning I thought I’d be really happy and the constant stream of reviews would finally stop. Boy was I wrong. This is a graph of the number of items I have on each level. I managed to hit over 300 apprentice items once again because I do so many of my higher level items wrong. At this point I reseted twice and stopped to do any lessons several times for months just to clear my Guru pile (which is why I needed 6 years). It never worked. At this point I’m just hoping to get to something manageable in 2026. So I suppose my “I finished Wanikani” post will come then. I’m not giving up. I love reading in foreign languages, which is my main motivation to learn japanese. And it is amazing to be able to read Kanji. I just wish my brain was better at remembering them. (I still have a few lessons left on level 60 so I guess that’s why it shows that I’m still on lv. 59?)

Congratulations! :tada:
This is a very impurrtant victory – may it be not the finish, but just a landmark for your future victories! wricat

No, that’s because you need to relogin after leveling up for your level to display correctly trunky_rolling

I’ve been here for more than 8 years and only managed to reach level 60 a few months ago! Also had done several resets
But WaniKani certainly helped me a lot! I’m currently working on my new routine now that I’ve reached level 60. Let’s both do our best! wricat

That’s the spirit! love2

It’s tough sometimes. I started WK in 2015, got to level 50 something, stopped for a while, then ended up resetting because I was overloaded with the vocabulary and constantly getting the same things wrong. I quit for a few years, then decided to return after resetting to level 6. I’m currently at level 38, but I’ve been slowing down as I still feel overwhelmed with the SRS and the vocabulary. I also don’t want to give up, and I’m glad to know there are others in similar situations. Good luck for us both!

Thank you! I wish you all the best on your journey. It can be a bit disheartening to see many people who just speed through Wanikani seemingly without problems, when you struggle so much. But we’ll get there too!

Just bear in mind that a lot of people who buzz through it do so with the aid of scripts that wildly alter the experience. I forget where, but was reading a post from someone who eliminated all vocab for the sake of speed (then realized they kinda shot themselves in the foot learning kanji in isolation).

Congrats!

The higher level items are a pain, especially 50-60 because many of the kanji is very dense. Not only that, but they’re not as frequently used, making it more difficult to find in the wild and contextualize.

I was in a rush to get to 60 before I moved across the country about a year and a half ago. I got through the fast levels pretty quick, hit 60, and then realized that all those fast levels made the time just after hitting 60 probably the busiest I’d ever been in terms of reviews/day. Commence driving for 8 hours a day, and then spending all evening at the hotel doing tons of wk reviews, lol. It does get easier, but just not right away! Congrats on making it to 60!!!
