Great topic! As a non-native English speaker (Indonesian), I used to struggle with the extra mental step of Japanese → English → Indonesian during WaniKani reviews.
I ended up making a userscript (WaniKani Meaning Translation) that auto-translates the English meanings into Indonesian right after I answer. It removed that middleman entirely and made reviews feel way more natural. Kinda helped my brain start associating Japanese directly with concepts instead of going through English first.
For listening, I agree that immersion is the way. The less you rely on translation, the faster your brain adapts. Keep it up!
