Week 5 葬送のフリーレン ・Frieren 🧝‍♂️ (Beginner Book Club)

p.71

Xとする means “to decide X”. “I’ve decided to do that as well” - referring to what she discussed with Heiter earlier, doing what Himmel would have done (and taking Fern along - at least, I think that’s what she means).

してやられる means to be deceived, or outwitted. She’s saying she didn’t really go into it all intending to help Fern return the favour to Heiter or anything, Heiter just managed to outsmart her and essentially trick her into doing it.

In the bottom panel, 私はあの子にこれ以上誰かを失うような経験をさせたくないのです。 I think this is something like “I don’t want to make that child have any more experiences of loosing someone.” It was a little difficult to figure out which bit was modifying what. It could also be “I don’t want to make that child have an experience of loosing any more someones / anyone else” but I think either way the meaning is clear enough?

勇者ヒンメルならそうしました。

No questions about that, I just like this line.

However, in the middle panel, is it just me or does Fern look a lot younger there?

I think you got it right in your first translation, although I think both your sentences say the same thing essentially.

I think 誰かを失うような modifies 経験.

There’s no other noun following it, so 誰かを失うような definitely modifies 経験

I had the same problem and thought that Fren was named after Frieren :sob:

grief (anticipatory or otherwise), is a really sensitive topic for me, so I’ve been feeling very grim with all the funerals. but I’m really happy that Frieren has new company now!!

anyways, with this chapter, I’m 40% through vol 1 woohoo!!!

(also, WK constantly reminds me if I’m sure I want to revive these 6-month-old topics, so by replying to these threads, I feel like I might be disturbing everyone’s timelines, and I really hope that’s not the case. sometimes I just want to reply to catch up with the group and keep myself motivated :face_holding_back_tears:)

Personally enjoy seeing revived topics! And the likes indicating that someone’s reading now too

Wow, I had forgotten that Chapters 1-2 were such a big chunk of of volume 1.

I think that automated message only really applies to threads like “I just started learning Japanese, please help” where replying 6 months later might make assumptions that are irrelevant now to that person. For the book club category - it should be encouraged, as I’ve only ever seen people get excited that someone is making use of all the collective effort we put into understanding and discussing a story as a club. For me personally, I get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing that someone is enjoying connecting to that past discussion and connecting to it again myself.

Thank you!! This makes me feel a whole lot better about reviving the threads hehe

Also makes me feel better to know that the following chapters are not as chunky :eyes:

great!

It definitely does - you’ve got one more chunky chapter, then from Ch 4 on it calms down into a more predictable 18 ish pages per chapter.

Yeah, the software does this automatically because some forums dislike the idea of “necroing”, but book club responses are definitely still welcome! It’s why these topics are open for 10 years compared to other categories which are open for only 1 year.

Well, today I just noticed that it’s ten years flat (rather than one year after the last reply for the other sections)…

Oh I never noticed that. That’s a bit sad!
