Nice!! I should probably also give that a try soon
We’ll see if it happens but it would be pretty amazing. My life would be complete if this would also work on YouTube videos. One can dream…

Are you still using SubaDub?
How does it work? The website isnt showing anything before a sign up screen.
You basically choose what you want to practice: listening, reading, speaking. You get short video snippets from japanese tv and you are asked to repeat after them in your microphone and they check you. Stuff like that.
Here’s a newbee’s question. Sorry if you have already answered it before. How did you get those dramas in the first place?
The easiest way (as to avoid the wild goose chase of correct timed subs and video) it to use Netflix content.
There’s the Flixgrab app that allows you to download the shows (using your own account that is) and then the Subadub addon (available for Firefox or Chrome) to download the subs in Netflix too, so you have matching video / subs.
As for content, it will depend where you are. Japanese Netflix has tons of shows with japanese subs … other countries will have mostly Netflix Originals and then some more. There’re VPN services to access Japanese Netflix in any case.
Thank you @Ncastaneda ! That gave me a head start
Ohh, I totally forgot. But of course there’s also youtube!!! There’re a lot of japanese youtubers that add the transcript for their videos.
Then there’re the automatically generated subs as well. And while I wouldn’t recommend starting with those (as they aren’t “that” accurate), those are fine when your able to understand a bit more, specially if it’s a channel you follow often and have a good grasp on the content.
You can use jdownloader to copy / paste links from youtube and download both video and srt sub file
Thank you! I’ve just checked Flixgrab and it seems to be only for Windows. I tried to find a Mac OS X alternative with no luck so far. Do you know of any by any chance?
The alternative is of course screen recording, which is not as nice.
I’m using Mac OS X too… with a VM to run a couple of Windows only apps… 仕方がない
Yep, that is also an alternative. I’ll try to do that
Got a Windows VM running, using Wannaflix, connecting to NetFlix JP. Installed FlickGrab+ got video, installed Subadub got subtitles. Put them both in a folder on the Mac. Installed Voracious and started playing. Not too bad
Super cool! Thanks
Could you maybe explain to me how to display multiple subtitles at the same time in the Voracious app? I’ve just downloaded it, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to display both Japanese and English subtitles simultaneously
The program only displays the Japanese subtitles. I think I’ve named the files properly…
I would really appreciate it if you could help me out
It should work fine in that format
I think the problem in your case is that the video file has also the “jpn” ending.
I changed the filenames:
But now there no subtitles at all:
The subtitles only appear when I change the name of the video to exactly the same name of the subtitles, either the English or the Japanese one. Because of this, it only displays either Japanese or English subtitles since I can’t give both subtitles the same name. I really don’t understand why it won’t work…
Edit: nevermind, I just got it to work For some reason this seemed to do the trick:
I had to get rid of the “.mp4” at the end of the video, and for some reason it does work now:
I don’t know why, but I’m not complaining XD
Thank you so much for your help It’s working now thanks to you.
Hi all, I’m at the stage where I really should be doing some reading and/or watching video, but I’m not sure where to start. Posts like these help with the tools side of things, but… what to read, or better, to watch?
I’m not really interested in anime or soap operas etc, but is that going to be my best option? Thanks for any tips!
(As a side comment, I can’t for the life of me understand why the WK team haven’t integrated a graded set of reading and videos into the site. Not to mention, optionally offering a proper set of vocabulary, incorporating all the great scripts, merging with Bunpro etc etc, in order to make this place a one-stop shop. I wonder how many “lazy” people like me would happily pay more for that convenience?)
Hi, what to read or watch will certainly depend on your taste, and then you’ll have to accommodate that to how much do you understand and how willing you are to deal with uncertainty (basically picking material you get 100% of every word or something more advanced but that you have still many unknown words that you might or might not look up).
For practical advice I would recommend get a Kindle for reading and a VPN account to access Japanese Netflix. Both those tools will open a great lot your possibilities in regard content. There’re ways to integrate material from both those sources into Anki or other SRS apps and will make consuming media and learning to work hand in hand.
There’re other threads dealing with what to read or watch too, but again it’s all about what do you like… material there’s plenty.
